Kings Dominion announces new name for rollercoaster

The ride which operated under the placeholder name Project 305 in 2024 will now be called Pantherian in 2025. The name comes from the legend of the jungle cat and fully incorporates the ride into the theme of the Jungle X-Pedition area of the park.

“We’ve been eagerly anticipating revealing Pantherian as it joins the highly anticipated, record-breaking roller coaster Rapterra in filling out the adventures of our Jungle X-Pedition area of the park,” said Bridgette Bywater vice president and general manager of Kings Dominion. “The 2025 season promises to be a 50th anniversary celebration filled with new thrills, and unforgettable experiences.”

The Jungle X-Pedition area was introduced in 2022. Each ride in the area represents a temple to jungle animals from an ancient culture. For Pantherian, the intense speed, rapid shifts, and raw power mimic a large panther on the hunt. The ride’s transformation comes with a new logo that shows an image of the jungle cat and new paint colors for the ride’s support columns and track.

Pantherian opened in 2010 and is one of the tallest and fastest coasters on the East Coast with a first drop of 305 feet and top speed of 95 mph. Guests can enjoy unlimited rides on Pantherian during 2025 with the purchase of a 2025 Gold Pass.

I don’t understand people’s obsession with keeping the alien/outer space theme of Flight of Fear. Aside from the UFO facade in the queue and some very simple alien mannequins in the station, there’s hardly anything distinct about the sci-fi theming. All of it could easily be replaced or redressed. Even if FOF doesn’t get rethemed for 2025, I imagine there’s a good chance there are plans to retheme it in the near future. FOF definitely should not stop them from building out a cohesive theme for Jungle X. Pantherian is a step in the right direction, and it corrects a big thematic mistake CF made in 2010 with I305.

Regarding Pantherian’s name, I neither love nor hate it. It’s oddly similar to both Pantheon and Reptilian, but it’s otherwise inoffensive. At least it’s original, easy to pronounce, and doesn’t have numbers. And I’m glad they went with a panther instead of an indulging some thoosies’ desire for a cheetah, which wouldn’t have made any sense for the jungle setting.

Thoughts:
  1. In a bubble, the name is fine. Unremarkable I'd say. Feel about the same about it as I do Rapterra—which is to say, it's okay.
  2. The name is too close to Pantheon. KD should have picked something else for that reason alone.
  3. I'm glad the 305 is gone. Putting the height of a coaster in its name is ultra cringe.
  4. Anyone else getting big Big Bad Wolf vibes from the marketing image? Disembodied orange eyes just scream Big Bad Wolf to me. Super weird that they'd do that right after BGW's announcement.
  5. Definitely in the case of the name, but maybe even the eye thing too—KD is trolling BGW here... right?
  6. That better not be the final train livery—it's hideous. After the great work they did on Reptilian, they better not just plop the coaster's logo on the zero car and call it a day.

It's really the year of eyes in teasers... not only is KD doing it with Pantherian, and BGW with Wolf's Revenge, but SFGAm had glowing orange eyes throughout their whole teaser campaign for Wrath of Rakshasa, and Cedar Point had blue eyes in the original teaser for Siren's Curse.

As others have said, I like Pantherian on its own, but it’s quite similar to Reptilian in the same section of the park and Pantheon at the park’s main competitor.

I’m still curious if there will be more to the transformation, such as audio on the lifthill, a tunnel (back turn before the trimmed airtime hill?), or more?

I’m hopeful for a solid retheming of the ride’s plaza, including doing something great with the racing inspired concrete tunnel and checkered plaza. This is now an opportunity to do something better than the cheap wooden fence surrounding the ride’s plaza and queue as well.

Even if FOF is not rethemed or refreshed, I’m hopeful for Jungle X theming extending into the FOF plaza and building’s facade to better tie in Pantherian with the rest of the area.

Maybe once we get a higher res image it'll be different, but I feel like the logo looks almost exactly like Rapterra's logo too.

Also I kinda feel like the park didn't have much choice here to make the name not sound like Pantheon, unless they just didn't go with a Panther theme at all. Panther theme makes the most sense given the Jungle theme, and had they gone with a cheetah theme we would all be complaining about how those animals don't live in the jungle. All of the rides in Jungle-X are named after a normal word with an ending thrown on (Tumbil-i, Arachnid-ia, Reptile-ian). So to fit in it has to be panther with an ending thrown on. There just simply isn't really any way to make that not sound like Pantheon.

Of course, they could have just gone with a puma or jaguar theme, since those live in the jungle. In a bubble, I believe a panther theme is a cooler theme than either of those though.

I really like the name by itself, I agree - it reminds me a bit of the word etherial, which is cool. I do worry GP might get confused between Pantherian and Pantheon, and based on the rest of Jungle X, I'm sure the park will do solid theming on it (which is more than Pantheon can say)

All of the Jungle X rides have a similar logo design language. See: Tumbili.

Just because they were theming it to a Panther doesn't mean the name has to start with "Panther." Just taking a second with Google Translate, Namiri is a badass name (Swahili for "big cat"). If that's too close to Tumbili, Nwam̄bā is Igbo for "cat." Also good, in my opinion. Ikwaga is Igbo for "prowl." Could work.

I'm positive if I took just an hour or so, I could work out a nice selection of options that sound nothing like Pantheon.

I’m just glad that the Pantherian name is unique for the one-of-a-kind world class ride, will fit in well with Jungle X, and isn’t one of Cedar Fair’s recent weird trends like “Copperhead Strike”, “Yukon Striker”, and “Thunder Striker”.

The trains are already black (although they too need a paint job), so something more unique like the panther “eyes” on the front of the train would be better than just the ride logo as long as it’s done right.
