speed doesn't affect how much the spoons flip, there's dampeners that will affect how easily the spoons can flip during the ride.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and maybe this is normal for the testing process, but it looks like that thing is flipping a lot more than the existing free spins. Wonder if S&S perfected the design, or if they simply "cut out" the hills where the cars don't flip as much?

This is perfectly normal because there is no weight in the spoons so there is less intertia for the dampeners to overcome during the course. This is also an early test cycle so there's very likely been little to no adjustment on the dampeners to affect the flipping in any way.

Once they're done with testing and are putting consistent weight into the spoons you'll see they'll flip much less often than in this video.

Idk when Volcano's actually gonna be replaced but I would much rather them wait and put something proper in that spot. The free spin is fine for now.
I would keep an open mind and not fixate on thinking another coaster is going there. That piece of park real estate has a 42-43 year legacy of a theme and attractions that made KD unique in the theme park industry.

To be honest, I think Cedar Fair is slowly steering KD away from its reputation of being a "coaster park on asphalt" and orienting it toward a more rounded family destination. Yes, major coasters will still be added; but, instead of every 4-5 years, we will get something maybe evert 5-7 years.

Funny enough, if you go back to some of the early posts and threads from when the KD discussion boards were first added to this site, a lot of complaints were about how the park just kept adding coasters at the expense of the rest of the park experience. Some posters suggested the park take a break from adding coasters, and even remove some of the existing ones. Maybe we have more influence on the park than we think :p

Spoons. Thanks for giving Free Spin seats a catchy name.

And now BGW has taken up the role of building up the thrill side of the park instead of adding milder rides. ?

So when you get in are you sitting...or the little spoon to the coasters big spoon?

Under Cedar Fair's management Kings Dominion has added a coaster on average every 4.3 seasons. Funny that this 4D Freespin is supposedly being pushed back to 2022...

Ring me up in 2025 when this cycle starts anew.
I see a park chain that took on a lot of debt to keep the parks up to par without much income in 2020. This year's marketed attractions are those that were for 2020. My guess is 2022 capital expenses are going to be kept to a minimum. Those parks who had an attraction lined up for this year, will be for 2022. CF could have outright cancelled/postponed any major coaster/attraction that was planned for 2022.

I don't think KD will be back on track for capital improvements until 2023. Major attraction maybe in 2024-2025. Keep in mind that major attraction might not be a coaster. Course, with KD's 50th anniversary in 2025, a major attraction would be a nice anniversary present!

Yeah but they have lost Shockwave, Hurler, Volcano, and I know it's not a coaster, but Crypt all In the past 6 years. As of 2021, they have only added Twisted Timbers. Granted, COVID-19 had them closed for a year, but still. The Freespin will be most likely pushed to 2022, so yes that would be about four years, but they're talking out more rides than they're putting in. Before Twisted Timbers, the last new coaster was Intimidator 305; eight years prior. As much as I hate to say it, Cedar Fair has not been giving this park as much love as they did before 2011.

No, Hurler closed near the end of the 2015 season. Plans for TT came about because Hurler closed.
How interesting. I have some thoughts:

1.) Why did Hurler close in 2015 then? To my knowledge, the ride ran PTC trains so parts wouldn't have been an issue for that, and you can swap out parts on the wooden structure itself.

2.) It is quite interesting that Cedar Fair, one of the leading companies in the industry, allowed a well-established park to unintentionally close three of its major attractions at the last minute, two of them being roller coasters and one of them being a large, well-themed flat ride. And on top of that, one of those aforementioned roller coasters was the most popular ride in the park. And on top of that, all these closures happened within a period of six years. I know the management team works very hard and are very good at what they do, but I feel like at least some of this could've been avoided with a little TLC.

If you're counting Crypt as a removal, it seems fair to count Delirium as an addition during that same time period.

I'm not sure what your expectations are. Let's take a look at the removals you mentioned:
  • Shockwave: replaced
  • Hurler: replaced
  • Volcano: removed, reportedly unexpectedly, less than two years ago (did anyone really expect it to be replaced already?)
  • Crypt: replacement under construction
And of course, while Cedar Fair may give the park less "love" when it comes to coasters, the amount that they've invested in improving the park experience is much greater than in the late 2000s and early 2010s, when the park was still very much an "asphalt and coasters" park.

Considering CF was the owner during this period, it seems more a case of CF learning over the years that the asphalt and coasters strategy doesn’t actually work very well (unless you are Cedar Point), than CF being some savior for the park.

So this is getting way off topic - I just hope the FreeSpin is a good ride and sticks around.

I think the big thing is that Paramount was a poor selector of rides, opting to go cheap and buying prototypes instead of later generations where most of the kinks have been ironed out. CF inherited their mess and have been trying to fix it. Of course, I-305 was a misstep given it didn't seem to have a solid long-term impact to attendance, but even though it's had its own issues it wasn't the first time most of the ride systems have been used by Intamin meaning they can fabricate new parts relatively inexpensively.

At least we're not getting a ZakSpin...
