They could make it unique by having cool stuff for it to go through and around. All we have is a preliminary layout, but they could spruce it up with some effort in theming and landscaping.

I was just about to say the same thing. There could be a mountain built around this coaster, but its just not shown in this particular set of preliminary plans. (Ok maybe a mountain is not likely, but there could still be some high level theming and scenery that helps fill the gap left by the mountain.)

I doubt they'd do a mountain just because it would remind people of Volcano and back we are to comparisons.

Would there be enough length to use a launch instead of a lift hill so to be able to have enough speed for more elements? (Would it be anywhere near enough to satisfy those missing Volcano?)

I'm not a Volcano hater - I just thought it was kind of mediocre but got the job done. Kind of shocked to see so many people singing it's praises. When it was standing, seems like the majority of board members shit on it, on the reg.

Hated it as a ride but respected its impact on Kings Dominion and the industry as a whole.

Also @SLC Headache at least with the proposed layout that @Zachary has released I imagine he had either a direct mention of, or something pretty damning, pointing towards a lift and dive drop start to the ride. That's at least for this specific proposal, as we have no indication if KD is even getting a coaster for 2021.

Yeah, can we talk about the timeline? Ever since both parks opened in 1975, Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion have never opened a major coaster in the same year. This pattern makes sense, since neither park would want to cannibalize the success of their new attraction by splitting the attention and the audience with the other park. And since BGW Project 2021 was very likely in the works well before KD even knew they were going to remove Volcano, it would seem like BGW already has “dibs” on 2021.

On the other hand, maybe this is an exceptional case. Maybe KD would rather have a dog in the fight for 2021 rather than let another year go by where the spotlight fades away from KD and onto BGW. Maybe the fact that this replacement would plug an unexpected and gaping hole in KD’s lineup makes it necessary to open it sooner than later. Who knows.

Either way, this is a case where the competition in Williamsburg is definitely going to make things tricky.

I sorta believe that we may be seeing the rivalry between the two parks heat up a bit. We've seen BGW heavily investing and advertising in lanes that have traditionally "belonged" to Kings Dominion—namely the thrill market. Additionally, Kings Dominion is "invading" BGW's territory too by focusing on events, entertainment products, and family attractions. Hell, just look at the absolutely brutal billboards just north and just south of KD on I-95. BGW has held the two closest billboards on the way to KD all season long advertising their new thrill rides. That's aggro as fuck.

While traditionally they might have waited, I think that Cedar fair realizes that SEAS plans on building new rides every year for the foreseeable future. Due to this they can't just wait it out for an off year as it appears that BGW is already doing the unprecedented and building at least two coasters back to back.

I thought it was just Pretzel Kaiser that was cheering Volcano's demise. And I stand corrected...

Yes, I know. Just wishful thinking here.

I don't really think they have a "hole" in their lineup as much as even one full year of the Volcano combination would have been awesome for the park. And lose one more coaster, it wouldn't even matter which one, then they have a hole.

I rode Gatekeeper once during my CP visit and wasn't impressed but maybe could come to sort of like it with short lines. Maybe they could make some big stone henges for keyholes.

As far as my opinion of Volcano. I thought it was a lot of fun with great launches and shot up and out of the Volcano. After that it was just relaxing rolls, but over and around the mountain. I liked it quite a bit even if it wasn't top 5 or anything. My son... it was his favorite coaster. I think it was high up for a lot of people. Plus it was unique.

Amusement Insider did an NL2 "precreation". (Side note - "Coaster Media did an NL2 two years ago with a B&M wing at KD on YouTube)

I like that except it could use another inversion or two

Whew lord that is bad. I'll whip up a better one over the weekend.

If you do, could you keep the lift hill height to 100 feet above grade? That's the number I have in the docs, but all of the recreations I've seen have gone considerably higher—like 120+ feet. There's a very real chance that the 100 feet above grade number could be an approximation, but assuming a 100 foot tall version is possible, I'd like to see it in action.

I very much hope that this is not it and hope that the plans have changed. With Busch getting a first of its kind and then a giga, this ride is... weak. I'm not sure it makes them all that competitive even though wing coasters are super popular with the GP. Replacing a high thrill coaster with a 100ft wing coaster is sort of baffling to me.

Dorney added Talon when Great Adventure opened Nitro and also added Hydra when GAdv added Kingda Ka. It's not unheard of for neighboring parks to add rides in the same year and honestly it could be a good move considering how much of that region of Virginia double dips between the parks.
