General Information:

"Project Drachen Spire," is a community-generated identifier for the Intamin-made, multi-launch, shuttle giga coaster that was originally slated to open at Busch Gardens Williamsburg in 2021. The attraction is planned to utilize the currently-vacant land behind Verbolten, Festhaus Park—the former home of Drachen Fire.

The coaster's main layout—as leaked before the addition was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic—featured two launches, two spikes (one spiral, one vertical-ish), and a couple of banked turns. Drachen Spire was designed to run two trains by means of a pair of switch tracks connecting the primary, shuttle portion of the layout to the station platform.

@warfelg Idk it might be easier and cheaper to go along with the “giga” then completely change course and build an entire new area + coaster.

Is it possible that after reviewing this plan, the park decided that it would be better (for some reason to be speculated later) to get two rides, Pantheon and the FHP ride, over one big ride taking both spots?

@madmax if that’s your takeaway from what I was suggesting then you are taking away the wrong thing. Yes something more built out would cost more. Doing smaller step by step allows them to spend less yearly as they recover and move at a slower pace in spending.

While we're on the topic of the original Project Madrid, here's something I've never shared publicly...

There were relatively credible rumors saying that Project Madrid might have required the death of the Rhine River Cruise. If true, I'm very glad the project was split—as silly as this is, the Rhine River Cruise is one of my most beloved rides in the park—right up there with the skyride and train in my opinion.

The thought of a Cheetah Hunt-style figure-8 put on top of a 315ft top hat is a haunting concept and I can't say I'm sad it didn't go through. Much happier with what we have now (even if Spire doesn't happen).

Zachary, not sure if what you'd seen showed the whole area, but do you know if this plan is the majority of the layout, like suggested in FoozMuz's sketch? I'm curious whether there's more to it since it's cut off.

I believe @FoozMuz’s approximations of the unseen areas in this proposal are pretty spot-on.

Note: This was a proposal—sources agree that there were other options discussed/drafted as well. Much like the KD wing coaster proposal we leaked on KDFans, it’s impossible for us to know how deep into the planning process they were at the time of this document—it could have been the first fully-drafted proposal, it could have been the final Project Madrid draft, or it could have been anything in between.

I swear, some days you're actively trying to lose whatever credibility you have.

From a competitiveness standpoint it looks like they made a good decision to split this ride as this doesn’t even look as good as I305 and may have been hard to market. With Pantheon they’ve got what looks to be a top tier coaster that may outshine the late Volcano, and will now be the premier ride of its type in the area.
