My girlfriend and I were in the first public train last night. Since I basically camped out since Saturday, I am please with that result. To be honest I have grown jaded and bitter in my old age and frankly I expected this to be slow, overly smooth, boring, and in general dumbed down. (this fear was made worse when they "fixed," the statue. (he was cut down before his prime.)
I was wrong! So very, very, very wrong. Meri and I got the second to back seat on the first train. We were shocked by how good it was. I was of the mindset the top tunnel was just dumb. It still is ugly and dumb, but it works. You go from dark to a flash of light then another bar, then another flash of light and then right back into dark. It is actually a bit disorienting. As it has been stated the drop competes with Nessie. (She still has the best drop in the park because of Nessie magic) The turns throw you around as they should and the helix works. (IMHOP most do not). The bunny hops work well.
So last night I rode second to back, back, and front. There was a noticeable difference between second to back and back. The hill does feel half done in the front, but the pops of air are more pronounced. The back did also get a bit more whip in the turns so I disagree that the only advantage to the back is the drop.
All things considered, as is usual, the back is better especially if you are a straight drop whore like me.
That all having been said, I did not feel like I was getting ripped off by riding in the front. In, what I find unusual circumstance, the front had it own advantages. If I could only ride once in a day, I would pick back. But if I could get more than one ride, I might go up front once. (I have NEVER said that before)
One last thing, and I can not emphasize this enough, it FEELS like a woody not like a B&M that happens to have some wood. It does feel out of control in places, it does careen around corners, and it does throw you around.
So was it worth sitting in New France all day since last Saturday listening to some of the worst music in the history of man on a loop... Yeah, I think it was. Still I am bitter that I did not get first in line... (that is a whole different story.)
I have been asked by 4 different people now how it stacks up against the other woodies in the state. Over all, and it REALLY pains me to say this, I think it is the best. HOWEVER that is an overall best, I think some other are better at certain things.
Drop - Rebel, hands down.
Bunny hops - Rebel
The feeling of complete, "this thing is coming off the rails," sensation - Grizzly.
Running backwards - Rebel
Pacing - Invadr
One word of caution, I have only ridden on Bear, and it has been my observation that Dragon can only carry 3 people.
