RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

Upon walking into Oktoberfest this morning, every pass member was given a lanyard with a card attached detailing the event. It was white, and had the Busch Gardens logos, and in between each one, it said "40 years of fun." And what was said at the announcement about that? Nothing. I expect a joint announcement of Project 2015, and the 40th anniversary celebration. My prediction is, it will be done in the way that Christmas Town was announced in 2008, they will invite Media to the park, gather them in a theatre, and announce it. At least, that's how I hope they will announce it.

^Actually they did touch on that. Carl said they'll be doing some stuff during founder's day weekend & having some exhibit to honor their "rich history". He also said they'll be giving out free stuff and used the lanyard as an example.

Carl did mention that the park was turning 40 next year and he did say there will be a Founders Event in May 2015. I wouldn't call that nothing. It at least shows they have something planned.

I'm sure there's some reasoning as to why they haven't announced it yet. The past couple of new attraction events for BG/WCUSA have all been announced prior to Howl-O-Scream and they ran promos through Howl-O-Scream. So this is different for some purpose.

Any one else a little bit concerned that they are digging right next to the footers for an active roller coaster?  I mean I know that those things go down a decent way but still the idea of digging next to those and exposing them to possible erosion and weather makes me raise an eye brow.

You couldn't even see the footers last week, they were covered in dirt.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

I believe that footers were brought up earlier. I think someone said that another park built a coster very close to another one and they not only shut down the other coast but a lot of the surrounding area was closed off.

Found it!

At other parks construction like that would call for the ride to be closed while work is being done. Think of Rolling Thunder during the early construction of El Toro, most of that hamlet was shut down by fright fest for the pouring of footers.

While I agree that the coaster should probably be shut down while earth is being moved around it, the bigger picture keeps popping in my head. That picture involves the hordes of people who would flip out over the coaster being closed.

I see this as well.

"ZOMG ALL THEY ARE DOING IS MOVING DIRT. I WANT TO RIDE APOLLO"

I personally see no issue. Vbolt has exposed footers, and it's not the end of the world. I'm also positive if they by chance hit one of the supports, the whole ride wouldn't come immediately crashing down.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

They have really smart people called structural engineers to determine if things are amiss, and other smart people called lawyers to make sure the park management does not do anything stupid that could get them sued.

Now I am not saying they are necessarily listening to these smart people, just that they do exist.

/me mumbles something about climbing to the top of Griffon without harnesses.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

Ok, let's test this.

Someone go ride Apollo, then turn around and sue the park for "negligence". Let's see how far it gets.

Yes, the Tacoma Narrows bridge is a excellent example of how ignoring certain laws of harmonics is a bad idea. But Galloping Gertie was hardly typical. That said, you point is well made. I would hope however, that in this age of computer modeling, they would have a better idea of the structural capabilities of 2 roller coasters. Particularly when one is B&M and was engineered to death to begin with!

Structural engineers of today also have vastly improved tools at their disposal. I actually wanted to study structural engineering but my school only offers civil engineering, so I took a hard left and am one semester from earning my Economics degree.

Anyway, I'm sure that all the risks have been calculated and any precautions deemed necessary are being adhered to (though mistakes are always a possibility).

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

Guys, the ride is being built and Apollo is open. End of discussion.

Let's get a real name, some details and proceed to table this discourse for awhile. Then we can complain about how "bad" it is once it's opened and hope that Busch will build a B&M Wing coaster 2 years later that will be described as "nice, but relatively forceless and lacking in a concrete set of external theming." :p

I don't know what school you go to, but I'm a Civil Engineering major and my school's department has structural as a subset of Civil.
