RE: 2017 Show Rumors

It was horrible. Just horrible. The performers were clearly talented, and the musicians were terrific, but you are only as good as your source material.

I have a long history of not liking park shows. But this one... if not the worst it is certainly in the top 5.

I am not even going to bother talking about the lighting. (normally where I go here, as technical theater is my swim lane) It was like they did not even try.

I will say this, the scenic art was beautiful. But it felt like it was just jammed into the show. (yes I now clockwork, blah blah blah.) but besides one number, that seriously could kill someone, it did not make any sense.

Let me just add here, real axes and flying debris... Not a good combination for dancers or the audience. I highly recommend watching the show from a distance and preferably with some kind of head protection.

RE: 2017 Show Rumors

The husband and I saw it this past weekend. Agree with some of the previous posts that it didn't make a whole lot of sense and was pretty hard to follow. They had some of the old elements of This is Octoberfest in it, but just inserted them in random spots. At one point they are singing German songs, then a song later they are singing Take Me Home Country Roads. There wasn't a clear flow or structure to anything....

That being said, the violinist was amazing and almost saved the show for me.

Also, they did the chicken dance and got young kids on the stage. All the parents loved this so they could take photos of their little ones. If you are into that, you may like it more.

What do mean by "hard to follow"? I don't think the new show has a narrative.

"OktoberZest" is not meant to have a narrative, it's supposed to be a song and dance show that needs to be entertaining first and foremost.

I was told by one of the performers that "Oktoberzest" purposely has no storyline so that guests arriving in Das Festhaus after the show begins can still enjoy the performance.

Exactly. Just like "This is Oktoberfest!" before it, "OktoberZest" is a song and dance show that can be enjoyed while people are eating food at Das Festhaus without worrying about a plot which is what happened to the ill-conceived shows "Entwined" and "Roll Out The Barrel".

RE: 2017 Show Rumors

I just went to the park today and at the 2:30 performance, I have finally seen "OktoberZest" with my own eyes. What is my verdict you ask? Well here it is.

I think "OktoberZest" is way better than I thought it was going to be and I largely disagree that the show is catered only for kids, for I never felt it was like that (both "Entwined" and "Roll Out The Barrel" are worse about that than this one was) for I believe it was made for everyone in mind. Of course the set was freaking gorgeous, I even liked the main costumes that I thought looked better in person, the German song and dance parts are the best thing about the whole show for the performers do their best to both entertain and impress the audience which they responded pretty well, heck I even liked the addition and explanation of "Country Roads". Believe me or not, the only grips I have with the show are the random black and white outfits for the opening that aren't worn for long, the ending being staged in a weird way (despite the performers selling the finale hard), not enough of that awesome violin player, and the lighting design being weird.

Personally I think it would be very unfair if anyone compares this show to "This Is Oktoberfest" for this one wants to be a fun beer hall show with elements of the old show but doing it's own new thing at the same time. Sure, "Roll Out The Barrel" did that already, but in my opinion "OktoberZest" took that idea and pulled it off MUCH better.

Yeah, I said it. I actually really liked "OktoberZest" despite the little problems it has. :D

RE: 2017 Show Rumors

I love the two instrumentalists and the fact that the whole cast has microphones. However the entire show soundtrack (especially evident during the "traditional" sequences) sounds like a karaoke recording. It doesn't help that the sound system still needs to be replaced. I almost hate saying this, but the only original musical piece in the show only uses flat white notes. It's almost offensive that the lyrics say that "All the folks in Germany" sing this song all day/every day when it sounds more fit for a Kindergarten class.

For every number where people say "I suppose that song was okay." You want to know why?! All of those songs were in "This is Oktoberfest!" at one point or another. They tried to add "Zest" to it by using a plot that's very reminiscent of the old show "Festivale Italiano". One thing that both of the shows have in common is that they use the word "contemporary" as an excuse to put together something that doesn't flow well at all.

Don't even get me started with the costumes. At the start of the show they look like Nazis without the right insignias. They could have put the same leather used for that toward real Lederhosen instead of the cheap capris worn later in the show. Come on BGW...

For now, the functional set and increased usage of LIVE performer's talents are the highlights. Seriously, the set looks very impressive in person, with the tree-dimensional figures that move at some points during the show. Hopefully they will attempt better lighting soon to bring it all to justice and allow me to write a more positive critique. Otherwise, I could have just posted my notes on the show.

RE: 2017 Show Rumors

Yeah, I agree that the lighting design needs to be fixed up. Sure I liked the show and it's elements more than you did but I admit that it does have some problems, not big ones that would ruin a show, but small ones that annoy me personally. But with "All For One" before it, maybe they could fix these small issues next year.

But that won't stop me from enjoying the show now! :D

I was at the park Friday for the opening of Invader and herd there have been so many complaints about the new show that in a couple of weeks they are gonna make tweeks to the opening of the show, I did really like the part that had them chopping the logs......

RE: 2017 Show Rumors

I finally have time to share my thoughts on OktoberZest. The bottom line is that I will continue to avoid Das Festhaus.

I suppose a fetish show is technically culturally German. And the 1930s are relatively modern. I'm fairly certain, however, that regardless of the validity, a BDSM-inspired scene does not belong in a theme park, especially during the main season, during the day. When those terrifying black leather lederhosen came out at the beginning, I thought, "but Cabaret was about the rise of Nazism in Germany; why are we celebrating that?"

Thankfully, they did change out of the bondage wear. Unfortunately, that was the last time the show seemed German to me.

I openly admit that I am not an expert on German culture. I am, however, a relatively well-educated park guest. So, I would argue my impressions matter. My main opinion was that the choreographer needs to do some research and/or be fired.

Three specific types of dance stood out to me as being completely inappropriate: waltzing, ballet, and Russian character.

It was emphasized over and over that we were at a beer hall in Munich. (Well, we were also apparently inside a clock, but as that had almost nothing to do with the show, I am simply trying to pretend those terrible sets don't exist.). Apparently, American country music is the most authentic thing they included in the show, because they actually explain the inclusion of "Take Me Home, Country Roads."

I'm not saying all of the choreography was inappropriate. Mixed in with the dance that had no place in a beer hall, were steps I would expect to see. There was simply too much that had no place on that stage, however.

The most obvious problem for me was the ballet. It is bad enough that they included this type of Russian/French dance, but they unaccountably used adagio choreography, as well. Ballet originally appeared as part of operas in France. Russia later developed the craft, where it flourished on their stages. It is entirely a theatrical art form, that takes years of training to execute well. The kinds of movements included in this show are generally used in slow, sustained partner work, typically on pointe. I cannot imagine a scenario, where one would see the Rose Adagio from Sleeping Beauty performed in a beer hall in Munich.

Similarly, the waltz was an Austrian style of dance enjoyed at formal balls. It turns out that Munich is not in Austria, and balls were generally not held in beer halls. I'm not saying it is as unlikely to see people waltzing as it would be to see ballet in the Festhaus setting, but it certainly isn't what I would choreograph for a traditional show with or without a "modern twist." I suppose from the perspective of the Third Reich, Austria was part of the German Zeitgeist and more importantly part of their empire. Additionally, Vienna waltzing is used as a symbol of the diseased and ineffective upper clases, who were supplanted by the Nazis, so maybe it is really a sophisticated, historical critique?

Finally, Russian character dancing is the cultural heritage of a country that has never been controlled by any German Empire, even our Nazi friends from the opening number. At least in Celtic Fyre, there is a narrative to explain how tap dancers ended up in a pub in Ireland. What are Cossaks doing in a beer hall in Munich?

Moving on from the incomprehensible choreography, the park seems to have decided that more audience participation is better. I know that supposedly I am the only one who loathes being asked to get on stage and look like an idiot for a roomful of strangers. And I equally understand that everyone else loves hearing other people sing off key. But there seemed to be a lot of people who looked unhappy and uncomfortable. Including several of the children. Did we really need three separate cringeworthy sections?

I managed to smile as I repeatedly refused to go on stage to "waltz." Regardless, it turns out that most people don't know how to waltz, so that part of the show turned into the performers attempting to waltz with people rigidly doing the "step-touch" maneuver popular in high schools.

I had flashbacks to my own childhood, as I watched unwilling children being pushed onto the stage to do the Chicken Dance.

I wanted to cover my ears, when we were forced to have a screaming competition with the other side of the room, during "Take Me Home, Country Roads."

One final thought: the number of things that could go wrong in the wood chopping scene boggles the mind. Sweaty performers, weilding sharp axes, with wood chips flying everywhere seem like a probable safety hazard. And who wants to dance on a stage with bits of wood everywhere? I'll be looking for the lawsuit.

Overall, I am glad that they have brought back trained dancers and live musicians. I just wish the park had given them something decent to perform.

RE: 2017 Show Rumors

It's interesting that you say that because the audience and kids were having a blast during the whole show when I was there.
