I don't have any insight into this, it's just my own theory, but I think Reilly was passed over because he is openly gay. At the time that shady Chinese company was the largest shareholder and I don't think they wanted him to represent SEAS. I could be wrong, but homophobia is a bigger issue over there than it is in the West.

I hope I am wrong, as I've felt that SEAS has had a pretty good track record with LGBT issues, but I can't help but think that was a factor.

I'd like more than anything for Reilly to return.
 
Looks like the grass was not greener..

This is a good example though of why it's generally a good idea to depart a job on good terms when possible.
