RE: New Facial Recognition Entry System

I've never had luck with the fingerprint scanners. They always had to check my ID after it took forever to flag someone down. Sometimes the bypass wouldn't pop up and they'd insist on checking my fingerprint anyway despite me telling them it won't work.
I'm really hoping this is less of an ordeal.

You've seen how this system that has yet to go live and yet to be fully explained by the park? I had no idea.

I know that was supposed to be sarcastic but how about reading the post first.

RE: New Facial Recognition Entry System

It's not surprising to me that they are going with a facial recognition system. I'm just glad they are only doing it now as if it's computer matching of the image the software for that has only in the last year or two finally became reliable enough to trust it. Before this most FR software would only work if the picture of the person was straight on. This is why a number of cities who installed it to ID or catch criminals didn't like it as the high angle of the CCTV cameras on the poles couldn't get a good enough image for the software to work. This isn't the case anymore. I just hope that they are smart enough to encrypt the info on their server as depending on what other info they store on it along with the picture could be considered Personal Identifiable Information (PII) that needs to be protected.

I personally never really had much of a problem with the fingerprint reader. It worked probably 75% of the time for me. Just lucky I guess. Even still the parks readers are old readers and should be replaced. Also having dirty or oily fingers can screw up the reader big time. We take peoples fingerprints here in my office but our system does your four main fingers at once and then your thumb separately. And dirty/oily fingers can mess up the image. I'm sure this didn't help BGW's readers.

RE: New Facial Recognition Entry System

So this will be more like when you enter a football game where they use the handheld scanners to scan your pass, but then they will also do a visual check to make sure it's you. Is that the general understanding?

If so, I do think this has the potential to speed things up. One area of selfish concern is with the Bring a Friend passes. If everyone has to interact with an actual human now, I wonder if they will use the opportunity to verify that the pass holder is with you. I hope not, I dont always enter at the same time as my free friend.

One concern I could think of is leaving the park with facepaint on and then returning would the system still recognize the person? Depending if they use the handstamp method still or not.

I wonder if this could be a benefit to the law if the pictures are matched against a criminal database they could identify some people on the run lol.

The post is a bit misleading. All this is is a system that stores a photo of you associated with your pass. Employees compare the photo to the person, like with photo ID. This saves money over photo ID in that they can continue to print those paper passes. I remember when they had those passes with photos on them, basically an ID. Must have cost them too much once the computer systems became popular.

I remember those days you would get your picture taken where guest services is now for the pass with photo. Around the same area where they used to give out free peanuts and beer actually in early 80's when leaving the park. Of course I was definitely underage back then lol.

RE: New Facial Recognition Entry System

They charge $5 for the new hard cards. Almost seems simple enough to just up the price by that amount and print the photos on the ID's IMHO considering I remember back when they used to do this. Then take the $5 and give it to the conservation fund anyways so they are really doing good by getting everyone involved and it's great PR for the park system.

And Tim yes as a kid I remember leaving the park and getting the chips, cookies, peanuts, etc. they were handing out at the end of the day also....

From a strictly business standpoint, you never want to do that. Costs are cut so that you can advertise the lowest price. Also, the paper passes can be printed in a couple seconds. Plastic passes take a minute or two. This new system just requires a photo be taken when you first get your pass(could be done at the cashier or the auto kiosk with the addition of a camera). Once the system is installed you don't have much additional overhead.

Soooooo...this new system is not about a computer making a decision of whether or not a persons face entering the park is the person who claims they are entering the park? And a human will be making that 'call', based on a stored photo...not a 'facial structure scan'?

Seems to be the case now. If so, I'm glad. I'm all for tech, but tech does have its drawbacks/issues.

As far as the old fingerprint scanners, not only did I and/or members of my family have trouble with those #)*& things, inevitably one or more people ahead of us would have trouble getting the stupid thing to recognize their print. And yes, oily fingers or fingers with hand lotion on them would foul the process up. It's old, dated tech that makes getting into the park a headache for some...and a headache for some meant a headache for all the people in line behind them.

There is newer tech in 'digital finger prints', but I'm not a big fan of those, and just getting the initial prints scanned properly can take awhile (myself and my wife have had it done, and my wife's work uses that tech in the course of their business). That being said, digital fingerprints are seriously accurate compared to a single finger print. It's a non-starter for speeding things up, though.

I have literally NeveR had any problem with the fingerprint entry. That being said, I support the the photo entry that Cedar Fair uses and I believe it will accelerate BG's entry rate.

I never had an issue either. When I first got my pass I made sure to press my index finger down as hard as I could so it would get a good initial read as possible. I think that's why the system always read my finger without issue.

I have my dad's pass from 1994 in the other room and yeah, it's pretty much an id card.

Took me a minute to remember where mine was but I found my first KD season pass. I think I was about 5 in the picture so this pass should be from 1996.
