Firstly, the Macs and tables where all gone Sunday morning. SG and his minions where watching the show. I guess that means the technical aspects are finalized. The sound was a bit better. The music not as loud, vocals brought out more (still can't understand a word they sing, though) and a better mix.
Now the rant -
MIU is more MS than MMoRR. There were NO drums to be seen in the old MS (until MS Revamped changed that). The whole point of "stomp" is missed here. Percussive bits on items OTHER than drums. This show is one monster (demons), few Stomps and much ripper row. This show misses the MS mark for me in a big way.
It is like taking a rock from the back yard and slapping a label on it saying it was from the World Trade Center and trying to sell it for a million bucks. It is only a simple rock. It just uses the MS name, which it doesn't deserve, to get noticed. Taking a few elements from MS and calling it MS doesn't qualify for me. Riding the laurels of a good name and all. It just needs to be named Ripper Row or whatever and a true MS show be created. I could swallow this show better under that pretense. The performers, video mapping, and non-Stomp parts are much better than LR, but no where near MS Revamped.
Banging canes on the ground with no discernible rhythm is not Stomp. No spirit of Stomp is here at all until the coffin scene. The crowd knows it and responds (even though SG thinks we paying patrons don't know what true art is). Drumming on real drums on stairs along to the music just isn't it. Those drummers could be unleashed to do all kinds of cool stuff. Untapped potential to the max.
What this current version needs is more Ripper/knife/audience interaction time and another real Stomp (not on drums) section added - plus it would make the show longer. Even though it "started" on the hour, the first bit of music is 3 minutes in. They take a bow at 20 minutes so the show is 17 minutes or so. Not much bang for the buck. Anyway, adding these couple of things don't require a rework of the canned music and the percussion can give us more of what we really crave.
The balls were cut off Bring Me to Life by what sounds like backing music played in double time that turned it into a pop song. Sweet Charity? Really? Anyone who has seen any old versions of MS knows 'Broadway' tunes don't belong in this show. Let us not even mention that Rhythm is Gonna' to Get You/Total Eclipse of the Heart mash up. The saving grace is there wasn't more of that LR rot. Unless the Rhythm is Gonna' to Get You music is suppose be that. The music doesn't resemble that song at all. Which is silly because the original is very rhythmic and VERY opportunistic to all kinds of stomp. Instead it was turned into a James Bond theme. What a HUGELY missed opportunity.
We already know BGW is a follower instead of a leader these days. This is the proper way to perform Bring Me to Life and Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Not only is BGW following, but these videos are from an old show in 2011. This year's vocalist can handle it. The mash up music for these tune just sucks in MSoRR.
The Night Beats castration makes it easy to stay at the front of the park this season. We still love the leads and the show and will keep checking in for better changes. Probably more going on in Fiends for us (the Doctor is IN!). MSoRR gets our support for the ACTUAL Stomp parts, better use of mapping, and very nice murder scenes (did I just say murder scenes are good?). Like LR, the leads and dancers are doing a good job with what they have been given - EXCEPT the demon convulsions. Revamped had a style call Poppin', which I think this show tries to recreate. They didn't get it. Please do different choreography for them. I hear running in circles is popular these days.
I want this show to do well in hopes of a better version, and more Stomp, in the future. We do NOT support the SG vision, misdirection, and additions. LOVE the coffin section, certainly the skeletons, and Beat It does a decent tribute to Revamped (Revamped choreography was
much better à la Night Beats).
Apologizes for grammar or spelling. I did not go back to read and correct. It was just pouring out.
