I personally am happy to see this.. Without them, and the concealed carry laws in this country, there has always been a huge chance that people are walking around with loaded guns in the park. They may have been for their so-called personal safety, but guns do accidently go off! Gun owners have been killed by their own guns this way! An amusement park, with jolting rides is no place for guns!

I agree that metal detectors are not foolproof, but they do make a public event much safer. Except when one is waiting in line to get in. That is an ambush waiting to happen. Busch has big backups at the gate many mornings, so they need to have enough staff to get people in the park quickly and not allow people to accumulate at the gate before scheduled park opening (opening a little earlier solves that).

I also agree it is a HUGE liability not to have metal detectors. If something would happen, it is cut and dry that they did not try reasonable means to prevent it.

I have felt much safer at Kings Dominion lately than Busch. I am glad they have stepped up.

As some who works customer service should they ever be yelled at? Well of course not. That said the park is busy under staffed and pretty much everyone working won't have a paycheck after tonight patients are thin someone is going to snap as long as it's just verbal and not explicit give over it. Trust me you don't want to know how many times I wanted to tell a customer to shut up over the Christmas holidays at my job.

Yep walked through with s bunch of stuff that set of KDs all the time. That actually concerns me. How much are they catching and how likely is something that should be caught getting through. From a liability prospective setting them up but not running them effectively is more of a liability then not having them.

You are right. The US is a leader in gun violence. It's all about gun profits for a few, and not about public safety by any means!

Can we not get into politics? Not saying anyone has said anything provocative. Just don't want another shitstorm thread derailment.

As long as parks have a good way to handle the crowds that need to get through the detectors, I have no problem with them. Over the last year SWO has gotten much better with this. BGT still needs work.

Does anyone know about the so called "detection dogs" used at the park? Are they fully trained or are they from the training center in Williamsburg and they just use BGW to aclimate them to crowds?

I can't vouch for BGW exclusively, but I do know in PA parks the detection dogs are in their last stage of training when they are there. It's why it's infrequent because 'classes' of the dogs do not come along all that often. For them to be used in public like that they do have to be at a certain point of their training, so no it's not going to be a case where they miss a lot. I was in DC a few months ago, saw one being used for our White House tour, and it was the first time I saw one of them react to someone. It was rather interesting. He was walking with his guard, stopped, looked up at the person, sat and put his paw on the guy's front pocket. They pulled out a (small) bag of weed from the guys pocket. Absolutely amazing.

Yea, that sounds about right because it seems you wont see a dog for a long time then all of a sudden you see some for a week straight. The dogs also to me just dont quite act like a trained drug or explosives dog. They seem like they want to play....or something. I cant quite figure them out and they always seem to be sitting off to the side where people exit where the JCC police or sherriff stand.

bgw contracts their dogs thru a company that has trained vet dogs. one of them has been to war and back.

the reason why they dont seem to act right is because they aren't actively searching for anything, they like bag check and these metal detectors are more for show and deterrent than anything else

you can stop and talk to the handler and ask, they are nice.

You mean like a service dog? So they are basically mobility assistance dogs in training if your are refering to the VET dogs I have heard of. Thats like putting someone in a police uniform at a bank that has no law enforcement training. The signs they put out then should say service dog in training then if thats the case not give a false sense of security.

No vet as in short for veteran. The company that trains them uses retired military dog handlers and trainers.

I am not sure how you expect working dogs to behave but in my experience, bomb sniffing and other military dogs are quiet playful and seem quiet normal unless under command. In fact some dogs are trained to appear completely normal so they can be used under cover. I have played fetch with a few in the past.

Yes, after spending much time around K-9 units, this is the case. At the end of the day, you can’t take the dog out of the dog.

I simply do not do business with any entity that treats me like a criminal. No more visits there, no more money spent there.

So you won't be
1. Taking an airplane trip
2. Going to sporting event
3. Visiting the Smithsonian
4. Going to Disney or Universal
5. Attending a school event
6. Going to the Academy Awards
7. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Best just stay home and binge on Netflix.

Part of the training for most of these dogs is more or less play based. It's quite common for them to be trained so that they see their job as a giant game. So yes this is quite common. The handlers st Busch have been quite out going in my experience allowing kids to approach and pet the dog at times it's actually a very nice thing to see. In contrast TSA is actually looking at only acquiring certain dogs and measures as they have discovered that the general pupic sees their dogs as intimidating.
