RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

I was at the media show Friday, saw it again later Friday afternoon, then caught the last show Sunday evening.  I won't go into my opinion about specifics because every time I saw the show it was different.  The last show Sunday was definitely better than the first show Friday.  Something that was mentioned continually throughout the first day is that we were watching technical dress rehearsals, which were being opened to the public, to gauge audience reaction, and that the show would be modified accordingly.  I can attest that whether it was in response to audience feedback, technical effects coming online, or other creative modifications, the show is getting better.  With another week of work, I expect it to be even more different than the evolution I observed over the weekend.  And, honestly, in a month it will probably be changed even more.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

And that is why I was surprised dress rehearsals for a FREE show were selling out. I, personally, would rather wait and see the final product, if I were planning to go to a show.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

Watched the show at 11 and 7 on the 18th I liked the 7 PM show better than the 11 AM I have a feeling that the longer the show goes on it will only get better gotta admit the show threw me for a loop I was looking for something different was I suprised but all in all I did like it and will be back at 11 Friday for the 1st offical showing! (hopefully)

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

After getting to actually watch the whole video, granted not in person, I'm only going to offer some thoughts rather than give an opinion.

• Slash at a 60's wedding?
• Hippys singing 80's tunes? 80's dudes (and Boy George?) singing 60's tunes?
How hard would it be to do the right tunes for the right era?
• 80's and 90's Gibson and Jackson guitars in the wrong periods. Plenty of good, and more recognizable, iconic period instruments out there.
• 1st or 2nd rule of puppetry - not seeing the performers. (Please look up Mummenschanz for reference to this distraction).
• Queen/Beatles mash up. Uhh, right. Did they have to get puppets to do this because no reasonable performer would do it?
• If I were Terry Gilliam, I'd sue (the ONLY Python to be AMERICAN btw). See also The Romantics.
• No, I'm sure the Queen vids, voice overs and dancer at the end aren't offensive to the Royals at all.
Is this suppose to be a homage or satire or what?
• Two lines or one bar of music for each tune? I guess it's geared for a stereotypical modern generation with the 2 second attention span.
Because, I can't even enjoy it simply for the music's sake if I wished to ignore what's happening on the stage. #RockOfAgesOnLSD
• Way too many blurry and misaligned video moments. How long before we have our first video triggered seizure?
• The last number? "So. How can we cap this off in the worst way possible? WAIT! I know..."
• Flailing is not choreography. (Sorry, that one is an option).

MY thoughts. Do not bash us as I do not intend to bash anyone else. However, here's to hoping there are many adjustments, tweaks and improvements.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

The abrupt switch to using the puppets seemed out of place to me. I realize this adds something fun for the children in the audience, but it would be nice to have a better transition. I guess puppets solved the complex issue of having children in the cast. Anyone else think the Octopus drummer costume could use a little more work? :cthulhu:

Otherwise I enjoyed the show and found the use of Queen Elizabeth making public service announcements and even singing along later in the show funny and fun. I had a hunch this show would make use of the new projection technology. The opening sequence with the subway is really well done.

I was at the 1:30 show on Sunday, by the way.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

If they make minor tweaks some places and major tweaks in other places(octopus's garden, and puppets), I think it has the real potential to be a decent show.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

I wouldn't mind the use of puppets so much if it was like Finding Nemo the Musical or done in the style of Avenue Q (Which I guess would technically be the style of Sesame Street??)

But it's just so jarring to go from all real people to suddenly puppets and mascot costumes, and then go back to real people, and never say anything about the puppets again.

It'd be one thing if they were at least trying to do the puppets in the bunraku style, where we see their face, but these puppeteers look like they're supposed to be hidden?

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

They do this on Broadway where the shows are in "previews" prior to them actually have an official opening. I think this is to tweak the shows. I remember reading about the history of The Lion King and it ran for a couple of months out of town to get it ready for Broadway. I also remember reading about all the problems the Spiderman show had in previews and how much tweaking they had to do to that show. So I am assuming this is the same for this show as well.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

I have been reading the thread and many people are basing their opinions on a video recording (which I personally do not mind because most have given that disclaimer); however, I just wanted to reenforce the fact that these are technical dress rehearsals this weekend. I am sure many guests read these forums looking for the latest news and reviews and I would not want anyone to think the show is completely finished and debuted because honestly it just isn't.

With that in mind, people have mentioned that shows on Sunday had changes in them compared to shows on Friday. I saw a show each day and saw no changes, then again I am not trying to be overly critical of the show and I wasn't really looking at the minor details. I was looking for things that stood out, then the general public would be able to really tell.

I am really trying hard to not post my final thoughts on the show until after next weekend because changes will probably take place. Mainly because the creators of the show saw audience reaction, and the full show for the first few times. I'd expect they did maybe a week of these rehearsals already with just the creators and I have always noticed that directors will give certain recommendation or changes to characters and technicians after this many dress rehearsals, mainly because they might want to see if those changes will look better or not.

BGW Family, I do not want you to take this as a 'bashing', I just wanted to give a reasonable response to address some of the things you mentioned. you have your right to those thoughts and I am okay with that, but in an attempt to try and explain why some of those things may not change or were done the way there were to give a better understanding of the show and perhaps maybe a different view. If you still feel the way you do after my post, I am perfectly fine with that.

I noticed your first few comments regarded mismatched time periods and honestly I do agree that those are issues that should have been addressed during the initial creation of the script and designing of the show. I think Slash was only playing that part because the scene change is very quick and it would have been too difficult for a costume change. With that in mind, I know many people, myself included that honestly can not tell British Invasion music from the 70's and 80's music. Up until just the other day and thought the British Invasion was part of the 70's and 80's. So I feel as those issues are more centered around appealing to those who may not know the time differences. I would venture to say people who have lived through the 60's, 70's, and 80's would be able to clearly point out these time errors and those born in the 90's and closer to today may not care to much because they may not know the difference. It can be seen as all older music. It is no excuse for the park still and I understand that, I personally don't think these choices will make or break the show for me, but if they had kept a consistency within the time periods that would have been really neat and could have educated me a bit more.

I fully agree with the puppetry. I think it is terrible that you actually see the puppeteers, unless done more like The Lion King on Broadway (which I have seen and felt the puppetry there was excellent). That said, I expect them to be hidden much better this coming weekend. I have a feeling this is something that may have been planned, as others have suggested with these being dress rehearsals, they may have still been working out what they are going to do to cover up the puppeteers.

I had no issues with the We Will Rock You/Octopuses Garden/Come Together scene because it sounded fine to me. If you pay attention you will hear the boy on the left sings We Will Rock You, the girl in the middle sings Octopuses Gardens, and the boy on the right sings Come Together and personally I felt Octopuses Garden was the only song out of place until the switched to being under the sea.

I feel like the Queen Elizabeth II bits were supposed to be comedic while the story of Lucy the main character was more serious in tone. I felt like it gave a nice balance between being serious and comedic. I do agree that it is not offensive, this type of comedy has been done consistently. If SNL did a bit about Queen Elizabeth II in a similar manner, it would not be an issue and I think the same thing applies here as well. There is no holding back when it comes to comedy.

You made mention about short bits of songs and someone else made mention of this earlier as well. I do not expect this to change at all really. Mainly because as Zachary said, these songs are expensive to use, even if you just want to use parts of songs it is still very expensive. I am sure if they spent the budget on being able to use the full songs we would be left with not much else. I also feel like a lot of the songs being mixed have been done so well that for someone like me, I really can't tell the difference. I am sure people who have more experience in music and those who are really into British Invasion music can tell the differences, but for someone with untrained ears and with no real understanding of the music, it flows together fairly well.

I have noticed the video mapping has gotten much better over the weekend. I know part of the reason as to be because the curtains they project on are not static and flow and wave slightly. You can only do so much to fix this issue. There were some really great parts that were very well done with the video. They will have to adjust their timing with closing curtains and how fast they can drop them in an effort they will stay still as much as possible. But I feel the final show Sunday handled the video very well.

The last scene was up in the air for me. I was really hoping for even just a slight bit more of Bohemian Rhapsody singing, but I guess adding All You Need Is Love was important so that you could get the overall theme of the show. Plus I am sure Bohemian Rhapsody may have been one of the more expensive songs judging solely by it's extreme popularity.

I don't want to give too much opinion just yet, as I said, I am still waiting to make my final thoughts this weekend after the show officially debuts in it's entirety. I really wasn't trying to bash you BGW Family, I was just trying to hopefully explain a few things. I did agree with you on a handful of things as well.

There's tasteful comedy and then there's tasteless comedy. Both are comedy, but one is far less offensive and isn't about making fun of another country's dignitaries. It doesn't matter who it's coming from on this side of the ocean, she's not our queen, we don't have the right to make fun of her.

And where is it said in the whole show that her name is Lucy? Because I didn't hear any mention that her name was Lucy. The only Lucy I heard was Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and if that's your proof that her name's Lucy, you're gonna need better proof. Because not many people are going to associate the lead female with that song.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

Does anybody have an idea what the third animal, aside from the obvious walrus and octopus, is?  My best guess is that it's a crocodile, ala Crocodile Rock, but I have no idea what to really think about anything in that part.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

I can only say so much about the parts with the Queen. Clearly many people feel as though it is inappropriate and I don't. Nothing is going to change that, so I can't keep pushing anymore on that point.

As far as the characters name, yes I called her Lucy because there is no other mention of a name and since that is the only mention of a name for her I am going with that. Plus I thought there was a park published press release or the Vice President of Entertainment made some reference to her being named Lucy. I would have to do some serious looking for it, but I thought that was already made clear. Otherwise, what else would you like me to call her, Unknown Female Main Actress 1? :p

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

I think that people shouldn't have to go seek out a press release, or interview before the show just to figure out the name of the main character, it should be known. Heck from what I've seen so far, Entwined V1, V2, and V3 are easier to follow than this. Basically only us on this site and the other select few are going to be able to understand Lucy, and the plot of the show, they need to make it more clear. They only really need to have one voice over from a narrator to say "This is Lucy, and she will be highly influenced by British Invasion Rock throughout her life." Not those exact words, but something along those lines. If just one sentence like that were said at the beginning of the show, it would spare the crowd a lot of confusion throughout the show.

RE: London Rocks! (2014 to Present)

I'm having a hard time thinking of anything with a main character without a name, or some sort of nickname. Maybe in Poetry or Haikous, but nothing in stage acts comes to my mind.
