My quick thoughts on Haunt this year in no particular order.

1. Mazes: I still hate the fact that we have to pay for these, but I think the park did a decent job on the upgrades. The two that stood out for me were MonsterCon’s entire front section being redone, and FEAR’s projections in the last room looking a bit too realistic for me.

2. The Overlord is back! He was super popular before the Queen came, so I’m happy to see him return. However, I wish they had made it a huge spectacle like they did when the Queen arrived in 2019. Budget cuts likely to blame here.

3. I was confused by the lantern and all it could do this year. I heard that it is supposed to do a lot more this year, but the QR code seems to link back to last year’s map. Very odd.

4. Catacombs is odd, but a fun time!

Overall, I’m happy that KD was able to make the most out of a pretty bad news cycle. I’m sure there will be more to come as the season goes on.

The mazes are included if you have a Diamond, Diamond Elite or Diamond VIP pass. I asked about it at guest services, they scanned my pass and gave me my wristband with no questions asked. Normal prestige passes still have to pay.

The lines weren't any longer or shorter than a normal haunt night with the upcharge mazes. I figured fewer people would be inclined to pay, but I guess at that $10 price point, people wouldn't really mind dropping money.

The mazes were overall pretty solid and pretty well-staffed all thing considered. The actors are a bit more high energy than I'm used to, even in the scare zones. It definitely made some of the more tired mazes feel fresh again.

The park should add more props to the entrance plaza again. It feels a bit more bare bones than in the past.

Grimms Woods was the worst of the mazes. They definitely struggled with both a lack of staff and the longest wait in the park. Either replace it and reopen Grizzly or hire more staff. The rest of them were pretty solid.

Cornstalkers has great actors this year. I wouldn't cry if it was replaced soon but knowing KD, they'll run this one into the ground

Trick or Treat has some of my favorite set design but the staffing seemed a bit light this year.

Blood was solid. Just suffers from it's usual short length and the stuffiness inside. I don't remember seeing the elaborate facade outside in the past.

Fear wasn't as good as it was last year but it was alright for what it was.

Monstercon was firing on all cylinders tonight. Great staff and fun set design.

Scare zones were really solid. I just think its time for them to change out the older ones for newer ones. I get that Carn-evil is an easy theme to do and people find clowns scary, but that scare zone has been around forever and I think it should be replaced with something else.

The new Catacombs scare zone was pretty fun. I enjoyed it a lot.

There is so much more fog here than at BGW. BGW definitely needs to add more fog machines. This is how you do fog at a haunt event.

I love that both VA parks have solid haunt events again. They seemed like they were getting weaker for a time but they've improved overall from previous years

This has been a noticeable let down for me. I miss when the park put decorations on entrance gates. Honestly, other than the scare zones and certain parts of the park, the decorations in general seem to be lacking more and more each year.

I agree with this. I haven't been to HOS this year, but I remember the fog not being as much as Haunt. I can't elaborate how much fog makes a difference in Halloween events, and KD seem to deliver in that department. There was plenty of it last night.

I just want to say, I love Kings Dominion. Even with all the corporate changes and lay offs that happened, this park is holding its own. My most recent visit this August was just as good, if not better than my visit in April because more rides were open including Pantherian and the Eiffel Tower. Bummed I cannot make it down to see HAUNT in person but these pics of the park look stellar.

Ahhh, yes, more pricing drama. This time, good and ugly.

The good: Currently, every single haunt night is $10 for maze access. Every night, including some Saturdays that were previously $35, are $10. This is good! (Not as good as free, but good)

The bad: The park is basically saying fuck you to everyone who already bought all season maze access at $69. (This is very ugly)

Ah, those $35 haunt passes weren’t selling like they expected them to, eh? Good. Fuck ‘em.

I hope they’re losing a fortune on food and alcohol sales during the event too.

I do feel for the folks who bought the all-season pass because they ran the numbers and it seemed like a good deal for the number of times they planned to visit Haunt. This totally screws the calculation. I felt a similar way when I paid the $100 for the all-park add-on and like a week later they completely devalued it by announcing that renewing your pass would get you all the parks for free.

It looks like they did this at Dorney Park too, they are all showing at $10. The Express pass also seems to have come down in price, now is $29-39 for most nights.

At $10 I don't think this is terrible but it does open the door to price hikes in future years. Or charging more for a year with one or two new houses (Dorney has had the same house lineup since 2023).

$10 is reasonable and I'm glad they implemented it across the board. I know last weekend was the first time Dorney charged more than $10 (I'd imagine the timeline was similar for KD), so there may well have been some pretty major blowback. Express pass prices still seem to vary between Fridays and weekends, so they can still try and make some bank on those.

This looks to be a company-wide thing too - Great Adventure's previous $35-$55 range is now standardized at $35 every night of FF.

Really does stink for those who purchased the season add-ons for legacy CF parks. I think making those eligible for express wristbands would be a fair way to compensate the buyers (of course, that would also make things tricky for parks like KI that also sold season-long express passes from the beginning).

Oh that's great, already paid for the all season pass due to the $15 Sundays. Charging a bit more on Saturdays wasn't a terrible idea though.

Monstercon has been great, 2nd Bayou 3rd Trick. Else has mostly been a dud though, ignore me. Burlesque is excellent.

Backlot has been running fire again since at least 9/7. Timing is still off, back half of white train and more of blue train see it, back row of red maybe but haven't run it lately.

Went to CP 2 weeks ago. Interesting thing was Cut Throat Cove and Bayou outdoor walkthroughs were Scare Zones, while their even weaker Cornstalkers is a paid maze. Haunting of Erie Manor is good. Missed 2. First or 2nd Thursday of the season is the time to go, didn't even get Fast Lane. Stayed until 8 Friday.

I've been to Haunt four times so far and as much as I hate paying for the mazes, $10 I can live with and they make it worth every penny. All the mazes, every night I've gone, have been incredible as far as the scare actors. Blood On The Bayou has been my favorite every time. The actors are always on top of their A game and it's my favorite themed one. I know it's been around for a few years now, but I never get tired of this one. The scare zones are pretty good too. The only one I'm not to fond of is Site-X. I'm not sure if it's the location or what, but it feels kind of out of place, despite it being in Jungle X. The area it's in is too small and the fact there isn't a maze near by doesn't help. I think it did work better last year in front of Jungle Market Eatery as there was more foot traffic there.

Also, even in my fourth visit, I'm still seeing plenty of people who are unaware of the upcharge for house, Plenty of employees working the front of the line for the mazes have been having to stop groups and letting them know they need to pay for the wristbands. I'm curious how this will play out next year. Knowing Six Flags, I'm sure it won't change, but I do wonder how much it will affect attendance in the future. Crowds have already been lighter than last year,

I feel the same way regarding this year's Site-X, where the new location just does not seem to work as well.

However if there is a positive to moving the scare zone, is that the single spotlight left at the site of the former location, shining onto Flat Rock, makes for some really cool photos this Haunt:

Visiting on a super dead Friday night yesterday, I was shocked at how enjoyable Haunt was. The event still doesn’t have that pre-pandemic magic it used to have, but it actually feels like they really tried this year. Atmospherics in the mazes and out in the park felt the strongest they have in years, and that’s everything for Haunt.

Although it’s a shame there are no new mazes this year, they clearly spent real money on improving the existing mazes. I want a new mazes as much as the next person, but improving what they already have is at least a really good thing in and of itself. It seemed like every maze except Blood on the Bayou had clearly noticeable improvements.

GrimmWoods has a new atmospheric soundtrack and new speakers that are closer to the path, providing sound effects (like wolves howling and snarling all around you in the Little Red Riding Hood section) that definitely amp up the immersion. Trick or Treat also has a new soundtrack, cool new “living paintings” in the first room, and new lighting. MonsterCon’s first half has been almost totally redone and that maze feels much more complete than it did last year — it still lacks the incredible detail of No Vacancy, but it feels like a legit Haunt house now. And FEAR has a handful of new props, disorienting new reflective flaps in the mirror maze section, and sound/light effects (like realistic projections of bugs crawling on the walls of the final room); it still suffers from one of the worst initial builds in Haunt’s history, but this maze improves a little every year, and I increasingly love the unique “every monster is the same” gimmick.

Scare zones were good as ever, though a little understaffed last night. One of the main speakers in Old Virginia (the one on top of Dogwood’s) has been out all season and I think it really hurts Pumpkin Eater’s atmosphere because it’s too quiet; I can’t believe they haven’t fixed that yet. I get what they were going for with moving Site X to that little patio by Backlot — I’m sure they wanted an isolated, self-contained feeling sort of like the old days of scare zones being in that little forest made by Volcano — but the space is just too small and removed from the park to be effective.

The new scare zone, Catacombs, is weird. I think it’s a super clever concept and I applaud the park for the creativity. Essentially, what they tried to do is make it feel like there’s a secret night club in the heart of the French Catacombs, which you can only get to by descending through the haunted depths of the actual catacombs. They tried to accomplish this by having both ends of the scare zone being dark and spooky (with the same ghostly moan soundtrack they’ve used in Necropolis and Uprising for 10+ years), with bright party lights, club music, and actors dressed as dead club-goers around the “DJ booth” centerpiece in the middle of the zone. Unfortunately, I think the idea is too clever for the park’s own good, because I worry most guests won’t understand how the narrative is supposed to unfold, and it’ll come across as super disjointed. The actors also seemed almost completely concentrated to the club scene in the middle, maybe due to staffing issues, but it made the “spooky” outer sections of the zone dull. Sadly, I think this zone would benefit from simplifying the creative storyline, and just making the whole zone feel loud and chaotic with dark, sinister club music and lighting throughout it next year. That said, it looks really cool with its walls of red-eyed skeletons and tons of huge new props.

Atmospherics around the park seem stronger than they’ve been lately too. It feels darker and like there’s more fog. And there’s less pop and rock music playing, and more of a variety of dark music playing in different areas of the park. International Street looks great with the lights on the fountain and Eiffel Tower from the 50th celebration synced to the dark music playing in the area. I still miss the mysterious, almost mournful cemetery atmosphere I-Street had in the old days, but this is solid too.

Lastly, the wristbands. I hate paying $10 for essentially the same thing I got for free last year (albeit with a few improvements). But shoot, it really improves the maze experience. Almost no lines, the guests seemed calmer and more respectful (maybe something about paying to enter the mazes makes people feel more like they have a stake in them), and it was a much more intimate performance from the actors. My group literally walked through Trick or Treat all by ourselves, and there were a few parts that were legitimately unnerving. $10 might not be worth it for the mazes themselves, but I’d say it is worth it as what’s essentially a skip-the-line pass and a ticket to a vastly superior performance inside the mazes. For $1.67 per maze (assuming you do each maze once), that’s not bad.

Six Flags blundered horribly by announcing the maze upcharge the way they did. They may actually be a legitimate improvement to the guest experience. But they fucked over passholders by not waiting until next season and letting people know about it before they bought their pass, and they treat the maze pass as a fine-print disclaimer instead of being loud and proud about it and its benefits. So it still comes across as a spineless money grab instead of an actual attempt to improve the experience, which is a huge miss, because I think they really did have grounds to truthfully frame it as an improvement. It will be amazing if terrible marketing ends up being what sinks the upcharge.

Oh, finally, can we talk about how cool it is that they’re running the carousel backwards now?! They even have a little banner dubbing it the “Cleaver Brothers Scarousel”, they put a creepy clown into the historic ticket booth on display by the ride, and there’s creepy circus music playing on the ride too. I have no idea how they pulled it off, but it’s such a cool little add to the event, and it really feels like one of those old-school Haunt/HOS things where they did something fun and different not to market it and sell more stuff, but just because it’s cool. My guess is it was someone’s personal pet project, so if that’s the case, hats off to them for making it happen.

All in all, solid year for Haunt. I wouldn’t make a trip across the country for it, but if you live in the area, it’s worth at least one visit. At least, for all the shit that’s been (rightfully) given to the event this year for the upcharge debacle and Six Flags’ never-ending cost-cutting crusade, the event is performing well and probably the best it has in years.

I definitely agree with Site-X and Catacombs. As I mentioned in my last post, the area is too small and feels completely out of the way. The Catacombs has some great props and the actors are really good. The club scene is cool but I do feel like it could've been left out. The area near the floral clock, they play some really good ambient horror music, but it gets drowned out by the club music the further you walk into the scare zone. There is also one area I've noticed they are still playing mainstream pop music and that's near the entrance to Jungle-X and Planet Snoopy. I get there's not scare zones in that area, but it still kind of takes away from the vibes.

This place was fucking absurd tonight. At 10:30 there was still nothing that didnt have less than a 30+min wait. Timbers closed at like 9 for the rest of the night. They have to be making so much bank from the mazes on nights like this

Haunt mazes are free now. I don't know how to feel tbh. Was it not profiting? Are they just being nice? Should I think this is stupid after charging 4 weekends worth already? Why stop now? Pretty conflicted

Anyone with a all year haunted attractions pass should be mega pissed right now. I really hope they offer something for those that purchased one.

On another note, this change clearly shows that Haunt has been on a decline financially. More people in the park will make for significantly higher in park spending. We are looking at much higher food/alcohol/merch/fast pass sales in the coming weekends. Maybe some successful last weekends will cause our houses to be free again next year.
