Crowds were large yesterday and we really didn't get to do too much, though we we didn't get there until something like 4 PM. Part of it seemed to be due to Sheehy (car dealerships) having a friends and family day. They were everywhere. A big part of it was mind-blowingly terrible operations on Twisted Timbers that wasted a huge amount of our time. I've never seen worse operations on a coaster anywhere else. Other operations we experience were totally fine, though, even good. Twisted was a mess when we rode it, especially once it started raining and they had to take one train off. Also everything shut down when the rain got heavier and also I think, but am not sure, we saw lighting and heard thunder. It wasn't entirely clear, but then they shut Tumbili down shortly before we witnessed that. We were in line and 3 away from ride it. At that point we left and on the way home the rain only got heavier, so I can't imagine they opened anything back up.

We went Friday night and had a blast. Seemed to me like the crowd was maybe a little bit bigger than a typical Haunt Friday, but it was still not really a big deal. One weird thing was the amount of little kids and strollers. I will never understand why this is a thing, but I learned long ago not to question people. You'll drive yourself freaking crazy.

The longest we waited for a house was Condemned, which was around 30 minutes, while Twisted Timbers was our longest wait of the night at around 45 minutes or so I would bet. I ended up splitting from my group to go off on my own to knock out all the houses while they focused more on rides after they hit a few of the houses with me. I was able to hit all the houses and all scare zones except Site X.

Houses are listed by my favorite this year. I will say, I didn't get as many scares as usual, with 1 house being particularly disappointing. But again, still had a great time just walking through the houses, getting a couple scares, and enjoying watching others get scared.

Houses

Grimmwoods - This is my favorite and I don't think it's even close. The atmosphere is just unlike anything else at Haunt with the woods, the lighting, the music, fog, and everything else. They really outdid last year's setup with larger and more detailed sets, along with more actors out on the trail. The first time was just me and my girlfriend, and that was pretty fun anyway. But I went back right before closing while my group was getting a couple rides in. I ended up being pretty far behind a group and had nobody behind me, so I got to just walk through the woods alone and it was a blast. Most of the actors interacted with me, saying things like "It's not smart to walk alone in the woods" or "Went wandering and got lost by yourself?" If you get a chance to walk through alone, I definitely recommend it. I can understand if some find it boring, but I love the creepiness factor and just the whole atmosphere of Grimmwoods. Easily my favorite.

Blood on the Bayou - Man, I really didn't like this house much the first couple years it was here, but this year and last, it's been awesome. Love the detail, the actors have a ton of energy, and the set design is awesome. If not for Grimmwoods, this would've been my favorite of the night.

Condemned - Not much to say considering this is probably still the most popular house in the park and has been for so long. Awesome as always, plenty of actors, good use of the environment, and it seemed like some of the lighting has been changed a bit to hide the fact that the set is showing its age. After so long, you'd think this house would be ready for a replacement, but to me, it's still one of the best.

Cornstalkers - Always hit or miss, but I'd say it was a hit this year. Such a long maze, the actors were hidden very well., and there were plenty of them too. They could probably use a bit more energy to amp up the fear factor, but I do love a good haunted corn maze.

21 - I see what people mean by this house being a letdown. The set design felt like a step back from the last 5 years or so. I actually kinda like the elevator bit since it was something new and interesting. I thought maybe that would set the tone for a really cool, innovating house. However, the rooms just seemed a bit rushed and kinda cheap. A bad KD house design is still pretty good, but it just seemed like a house from like 2015 or so rather than KD's 2022 standard. Got a few decent scares, so still had fun, but it was definitely a misstep. With it being an anniversary house, that's a big shame.

Trick or Treat - This was super disappointing to me, but I was also annoyed throughout the whole house, which I'll explain. This was after I had split from my group and I was in the front of the line, thinking "Awesome, there will be a ton of scares." Nope. Had a couple, but I was definitely disappointed by the number of times I came through a room and saw nobody. Kind of a letdown. The actors themselves are great, just like everywhere else in the park, there just didn't seem to be many of them. However, I also had a group of college kids behind me and they completely ruined the experience anyway. One of them was that stereotypical jackass going into every room like "Oh, yeah, there's one there and one there. There's another in the corner there, yeah I see you. Uh huh, ya got me. Oh there's another over there." Literally, I'm not exaggerating, he did this the entire time, in every room, around every corner, to every actor. I ended up basically speed walking through the house to get away from them, which probably lead to the house being disappointing too since I kinda breezed through every room. People like him ruin the whole thing and it's such a shame. I also feel bad for the actors when people do that crap. Listen, Thad (I don't know his name, I'm just guessing by his overall demeanor). If you're gonna be a tough guy - I promise, this guy isn't - then don't go through the houses. Just stay outside and hold the coats.

Scare Zones

Pumpkin Eater - Far and away my favorite scare zone and I think it's my favorite scare zone KD has ever done. The props, costumes, makeup, lighting, it's all stunning to me. It leans in so hard to Halloween and I just love it. I passed through 3 or 4 times, the last time being by myself, and like Grimmwoods, the actors targeted me. I came around a corner of some hay and a girl on stilts scared the hell out of me. I yelled out the F-word and within seconds, I was surrounded by 4 or 5 other actors, all giving me crap for walking alone, including one saying "Ohhh, alone? Somebody doesn't have any friends!" which made me laugh. Love this scare zone so much.

Cleaver Brothers - Walking through Cleaver Bros is awesome. I'm not sure I had any scares the 3 times I went through, but it didn't matter. I don't even go through it for scares, it's just really fun to walk through. The carnival theme is just perfect for that spot and it really does feel like you're going through a carnival. Going at the end of the night was very cool since it was pretty empty, so I got to just take my time, take in the sets and enjoy the scenery. Always a big fan of Cleaver Bros.

Uprising - This is basically just Necropolis with a different name, right? That's not a bad thing, I always loved Necropolis and I get the same vibe from Uprising. Something about the blue and green lighting really makes this stand out for me, I don't really know why. Good amount of actors with a lot of places for them to hide. Didn't disappoint, just Necropolis never did.

Masquerade - KD can try to sell me on this being a scare zone all they want, but I'm not buying it. It's a fun little area, but no, it's not a scare zone. I don't hate it or anything, I just wish they wouldn't call it a scare zone. I didn't even notice sets, though maybe I just missed them as we passed through. Nothing against the actors, they were all interacting with people, including us. They just don't have a ton to work with.

For what it's worth, we had no problems from the crowds. A few annoying people (looking at you, Thad), but that'll happen with any big event. There's a difference between being annoying and being a problem and we didn't see any problems. I say it every year: If you can, go on a Friday.

As always, it was a great night. Nearly every inch of the park has some kind of spooky feeling to it, whether it's lighting, fog, props, wandering actors, etc. Special shoutout to International Street, which is awesome. It's so much fun to just walk around the park, take everything in, and get wrapped up in the Halloween feel of everything. KD does such a great job every year and didnt disappoint.

At Haunt this year, it's amazing - yet makes complete sense - on how the park is so heavily pushing this year's WinterFest event.

Here tonight (Friday) as you walk up to the front entry plaza for Haunt, you are greeted with the giant tree at the flag poles:

IMG_5627.jpg

And all the way back on Friday October 7 - so the first full week of October (which is the earliest I can remember them doing this) - the park had already drained the fountains on International Street and started construction of the skating rink:

And here tonight, they already have the floor of the rink fully constructed:

So with two full weekends of Haunt left this season, it's surprising how hard the park is gearing up for WinterFest. But of course, makes absolute sense... as with the multitudes of souls attending Haunt - where unfortunately the average guest seems to only visit the park during Haunt - it makes sense to remind them that the park is actually open for more than just the month of October.

And though I aplaud the park in this move... I still wish I could visit Haunt, and experience Haunt, without being remdinded of WinterFest. But hopefully this works to their advantage, with some of these same people coming back in December.

Happy Hallo-Christmas to all! 😄

So Haunt 2022

I experienced Haunt twice this year. First time last Sunday and second time last night.

21 - I've done a number of anthology/anniversary mazes in the past. This one was rather weak. The elevator gimmick is alright. I feel Hershey did a better job with theirs. Set design was kinda weak compared to other mazes the park has done in years past. Actors were lacking both days in spots but the actors inside were pretty strong.

Grimm - was stronger than last year. It was closed due to rain last weekend. This weekend, it was performing well. I like the new sets and the increase in actors.

Cornstalkers and No Vacancy - both of these mazes suffer from the same issues Bitten and Catacombs had at BGW. They're excellent mazes with great set design and good actors, but they've been around a really long time and could either use a refresh or change out.

Trick or Treat and Blood on the Bayou are great mazes that suffer from another issue. They're both really short. Blood had a noticeable lack of actors last night. Is that air filtration system in Blood supposed to be out in the open like that? Set design is phenomenal across both mazes but I wish they could've at least built a bigger warehouse for Blood. Trick might be an issue since they used an existing building. Is the warehouse from Zombie High still there? Maybe move it back there.

All the scare zones perform well. I always love the big set pieces KD gives their zones. Wish BGW still did the same for theirs. Actors performed well all throughout. If I would change anything, Eiffel Tower scare zone should be expanded to give the actors more room. Maybe change out CarnEvil. That's been around for ages. I could've sworn CarnEvil used to be a much bigger zone. Uprising has been around for a while too, but at least KD moves it around every year so it's somewhat fresh. Bring back the scare zone under the arch or add another on the safari village or add one behind Planet Snoopy.

Overall I love KD's haunt. It's pretty strong. Unfortunately some of the mazes could use changing up or retooling to be made better.

I didn't really feel one way or another about the elevator bit in 21 except I wish they would do away with all the "pre shows" period, along with the stupid photo session in line for, I think it was Blood on the Bayou. I get that it's to help prevent stacking in the houses (and presumably people buy pictures), but feel like it ruins the flow of the house AND the line. I didn't like it at Circo at BG and I don't like it here. Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but I feel like 3 of the 5 houses had a pre show or mandatory photo.

Blood has a photo in the queue and 21 has a preshow. Those are the only oddities.

Blood's photo I'm fine with. The line continues after the photo so the photo thing isn't actually disrupting anything.

21's preshow, however, is a horrible start to a horrible house. The elevator operators are incredible, but their talents would be better utilized walking the queue or spieling for the house at the start than in some horribly embarrassing "elevators" where they try to shove everyone for 20 seconds.

While on the topic of 21, here at the end of the event, I think it's now safe to say that the house is a total disaster. The cast is above average, but their talents are being squandered in a really, truly, abysmal trainwreck of a house. Maybe 21 could be improved with a significantly larger time and money outlay, but KD shouldn't even consider doing so in my opinion. Kill this house with fire immediately after this year's event concludes, cut your losses, pretend like it never happened.

21 soils the incredible Haunt legacy the park invested so heavily in with Condemned, Trick, Bayou, and Grimm. 21 is just such an obvious, glaring downgrade from everything the event has hosted for like the last five years. I don't know what internal dynamics caused this concept to be drawn up, approved, and executed in this way, but I hope it's giving someone inside Kings Dominion real pause—because this isn't what should be coming out of KD's Haunt. The house, in my honest opinion, is worse than all two and a half of BGW's new-for-2022 houses. Sure, it performs better, but none of the credit for that goes to the house—it goes to the actors who desperately try to make this travesty function night after night.

Personally, I disagree with the above statement. When I went, we didn’t go through an elevator pre show. Simply just walked in. I could definitely tell that even if it was at Busch, this maze (I assume to be temporary) would not even have as much detail as this one does. And, like you mentioned, scare actors are fantastic in that maze, and don’t get enough credit.

I feel like KD didn't invest heavily in 21 since it's likely a one and done house. I wouldn't say I hate it with the fire of a thousand Suns like Zachary seems to, but it was the worst of the night for sure. I dunno, I just felt more like "Eh, not great" and moved on lol. Not all gonna be hits, I guess.

That's interesting there was no elevator this past weekend. It's a completely unnecessary bit, but I kinda respected them trying something new, even if the execution wasn't great.

There was an elevator, when we went through last night.

I agree with @Zachary, incidentally. My hope is that they dialed 21 in, because it was never intended to last more than a single year. I'm not sure I think that justifies opening something of that low caliber, given the strength of the recent event additions, however.

I should’ve clarified, my experience was on the 9th.

Kinda off topic, but i like that they change the FunTV loop for the season, especially when they played this banger when i was in line for Dominator

Heading to this event (and park) for the first time ever this Sunday. Do they make you exit the park before the event starts, like Carowinds does before SCarowinds? We have Fast/Fright Lane, so we hope to get everything done, but any helpful tips are much welcomed!

They do not require you to exit the park, but they do prevent re-entry after the event starts.

You shouldn't have any trouble getting through all of the mazes and scare zones with Fright Lane. Be sure to do Grimm Woods and Corn Stalkers after dark, as they are both outside.

There are two schools of thought on the opening show between the Eiffel Tower and the fountains (now being converted to an ice skating rink). Some people like to watch it, before heading to their first maze. Others prefer to get in line before or while it is running to get ahead of the crowds.

Are you looking for advice on anything specific? Mazes? Food? Rides? Etc?

Thanks for the information! We will probably be in the park most of the day, so I would like to know the best places to eat. I also wouldn’t mind knowing which mazes are worth doing twice if given the opportunity. Thanks!

The best food places are Grain and Grill and Jungle Market. Condemned and Grim Woods have been my favorite mazes.

I would actually recommend Grain and Grill and Outpost Café. KDFans has published some reviews (we had scheduling problems and still owe a few):
KDFans

It is a bit difficult to recommend mazes, since people's preferences vary so widely. I have also noticed that performances change from day to day. Blood on the Bayou and Condemned are usually popular, because of the sets and strong casts. That said, if you prefer more storytelling, Grimm Woods might be more fun for you. Not all of the mazes rely on jump scares, which is also controversial. You are probably better off doing everything and then deciding which you want to do again. We sometimes hit a maze a second time, because it seemed understaffed and we want to give it another shot.

I can say that 21 is disliked by a lot of people.

I’d like to give Country Kitchen a shout out as well. It’s been super good every time I’ve had it and the variety is pretty nice. Pulled pork, fried chicken, and Brisket. You also get a side and a piece of cornbread. I find myself eating here a lot more than I have. Really goes to show how well the culinary department has been doing.

Borders Burrito is also a good safe option. You get to pick exactly what goes into your food. The chips and queso are super yummy as well.

Outpost is what I was thinking my brain is on over load with work thanks for the correction.
