RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

Have my concerns been that harsh to lump me with SDG? You make me blush.

Nic: Yes, but if these are designed to try to scare people, they should be attempt to be scary.

That actually is an interesting point: are the Terror-tories supposed to scare people the way scare-zones and hordes have done in the past? Or are they supposed to create a creepy and consistent atmosphere throughout the park?

Honestly, I can see value in either. I do find it jarring to leave a house and feel as if I am back in the normal park. I like the idea that everything is HOS. But that doesn't have to mean that everything needs to be specifically "scary." It just needs to be theme-y, if that makes any sense.

If the DJ plays the right kind of music, it could add to the atmosphere. Music is used all the time to ratchet up the tension. If it turns into a random street party, perhaps not.

I just noticed there is no lower price for children; they must be serious about trying to restrict their presence.

B) More focus on booze this year might translate to more drunk ******* causing trouble. This might mean more money, but it might cause other problems. Factor in the park might be cutting back on security to save money...

C) The park is getting mostly new performers a very short time before the shows. This doesn't mean the performers are going to be bad, but it means less practice.

Thank you. Amen and amen. That is all.

Has anybody heard if any of the houses will have a webcam this year?

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2013: Fear Has a Way of Spreading

From my understanding Terror-tories are not Scare Zones, and I think this is what plays into the difference between the two. A Terror-tory is an over-the-top thematic experience that to another time and place.

A Scare Zone is a zone or area that is themed and is primarily to cause you to be scared on the pathway.

I actually do like the idea of a Terror-tory not being scary because it means less money to pay scare actors, more money to work on theme. Also, this is a whole new concept that hasn't been touched yet.

Now I will say that Demon Street is the theme, or Hell as it will become known, should have a consistent theme. I think if the DJ is themed or the music is themed to Hell-ish music then it all ties into the theme. Keep in mind, Rock N' Roll is considered the devil's music to some so, I can see the park playing a lot of that.

You make good points. Music and other audio is /vital/ to proper presentation of haunted events. So, lets just say that these terror-tories are not designed to evoke fear, but to immerse guests in this "Demon Street" theme. We need to understand the theme of Demon Street first to see whether or not a DJ of all things could work.

The park said:
Paris is burning. Can you escape before the city is engulfed in flame? Let the smoldering ruins light your way, but beware, fiery fiends lurk around every corner ready to put you on the coals. The smell of a burning inferno fills the air and rumor has it unsuspecting souls will be roasted on a spit. It’s about to get very hot in Paris, so stay cool or you may find yourself going up in smoke.

So it looks like demons have invaded Paris or something along those lines and they're going to be torturing people.

And they brought a DJ with them...

I can't think of any type of music that adds to this theme that could require (or even benefit) from a DJ. A demon metal band? F--- Yeah, but not a DJ. What the park doesn't seem to get is that immersive themes are rather fragile things. The park could have animatronic people writhing in pain on pikes while a 50 foot tall demon goat vomits blood on guests, but Kanye West(as much as a lyrical genius wordsmith gay fish as he is) is going to kill all that effort.

Yes by this description if read with the intent of scares it may appear that demons will roam the streets of Paris.

However, try re-reading it but keeping in mind that it is about a DJ party? Things seem to pop out and seem more different than you initially thought?

Examples:

"fiery fiends" ~ 1. evil scary creatures 2. sexy creatures/dancers much like from the show Fiends?

"burning inferno" ~ 1. hot place on fire 2. the song "Burn Baby Burn, Disco Inferno" just pops right at me

"very hot in Paris" ~ 1. temperatures in Paris are high 2. temperatures are rising much like in a club with lots of people moving

"roasted on a spit" ~ 1. painful death 2. as in roasted by a group of friends, family or people for poor dancing or traits, etc. like comedian roasts.

"stay cool or . . . yourself going up in smoke" ~ 1. keep cool or you will burn 2. keep cool and have fun dancing or dance like a fool and mess up

These little bits of context clues depending on how you read them can have dual meanings.

That's not how advertising works, by that logic they could very well be advertising anything from a hot sauce to an orgy. If they wanted to do a goofy teen dance party, they'd advertise a goofy dance party like they advertise Fiends. Not to mention if the park did do what you suggest and people went to Demon Street expecting a serious demon themed area and got a goofy dance thing, people would rage because of the false advertisement.

Sure, teens will eat it up, but with the park banking on immersive theming this year, a DJ is a poor choice.

Let me help with a few things, first off I wouldn't call it a "goofy" dance party. I think the way you use that word is misleading. Fiends is in no way advertised as a "goofy dance party". It is advertised as an adult oriented show.

I don't think people would rage because look at the target audience for Howl-o-Scream as a whole, high schoolers and young college students. This is the ideal drinking crowd that also likes to go out and party. They will more than likely embrace the party atmosphere, grab some drink from the bar just down the path and get their party on. That crowd being anywhere from 17 to 25.

It isn't false advertising, yes it can be misleading depending on how you read it, but it is not false.
