RE: Howl-O-Scream 2012 Rumors

So anyone see any HOS stuff at the park today? Or am I going to have to wait until I go back in a few days?

I wouldn't expect much, just the dark side of the gardens music playing on the bridge and maybe a couple signs.

I was thinking the same thing - the hill to the turnstiles are most likely at/near the top of their list... It's probably more about removal of Illuminights stuff first...

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2012 Rumors

I'm sure we will hear something by the end of the week.

Does anybody know of any places that would give out BGW coupons besides Wendys? r

Last year they completely revamped the bridge in one night. I think take down and put up wil go pretty quick this year; however the bridge is usually their #1 priority because that bridge is their tool of advertising new events and such.

I find it halarious going to Halloween Haunt at Kings Dominion and then going to HoS. There is maybe 15 10 year old in the whole park. The reason BGW has so many kids is because it ment to be a family park instead of a thrill park. Parents think because BGW does all these friendly shows and things, they will think HoS is "kid friendly". Like look at what the train has transformed into, Lights and signs. I remember about 5 years ago they had people in the fields doing all kinds of crazy things. Then when you went to get off in Scotland, they had chainsaw guys to scare the crap out of you. There is no question it has changed in the past few years. I wonder if the person who comes up with the ideas ever looks at these comments.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2012 Rumors

The train wasnt changed because of kids. It was changed because it was expensive and took away the parks primary transit system. Oh and i think that more kids are at bgw than kd because parents think kd has a rougher crowd than bgw. And i think alot of ppl who work at bgw read these forums.

How could it be expensive if they have already bought everything? I would figure all those signs were bought 2 years ago.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2012 Rumors

I was at the park today, nothing was up on the Germany bridge banner-wise, but the orange lightbulbs were in the lamps. Fear fair has been started on from what I could see on the train, the clown laundry was up on the lines and it looked like just general activity had been happening there because of the number of carts and stuff parked. More signs are up for HoS on light poles, but other than that, didn't see much.

Also, papa johns boxes have coupons for HoS

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2012 Rumors

The Haunted Train rides was expensive, a huge liability issue, and also took away from the park's transit. Those are the main reasons for the discontinuing of the train. It may not have been expensive to reuse signage, props, costumes, and such, but think of the labor hours? Who puts those items in place? Who oversees their daily operation/maintenance/care? How many scare actors did it take to pull off such an attraction? Yes, the park could have used labor money to put more quality into to other attractions.
Liability wise, think of those chainsaws? Actors alongside a moving transit system? Guests who may be prepared to jump off said transit system and run away? Their insurance must have gone sky high with this attraction (compared to other attractions). Think of all those safety issues. What if someone got hurt? How easily it was for someone to get hurt? Guest safety is not something the park is willing to risk.
The park's main transit used by all guests is the train. This will help tired guests get to the exit/entrance of the park quickly, and especially for guests who do not wish to experience the scares, yet are at the back of the park at 5:30, will ensure them a safe journey to the front without scares. It also gives all guests a break from the scares and stress of walking around the park.

There is much more to every decision than what meets the eye. Yes some examples I gave were some of the extreme, yet they are very likely all the same. Dig deeper into Howl-o-Scream. The event itself has gotten dark and more mature over the years. 2010 it hit the breaking point, with the Scare is Everywhere theme. Before that Jack had been their theme for multiple years of co-exisiting somewhat family friendly scares. 2010 and the park tried to push for kids to be out of the park, showing they want to break from their family friendly image just during the evenings of less than 30 days. 2011 was a greater year for the park that showed the park aiming for a darker look, and matching it's sister park in Tampa that hosts a MUCH more mature event. This year, the theme proves they are trying to go for a more mature event. The return of Fiends is evident of that. The park has been giving subtle hints to the GP that they want to be darker, scarier, and much more mature. They are easing into it mostly because their primary focus was being family friendly and they also want to still be family friendly during the day.

I think that blackstone wants to turn williamsburg's hos into Tampa's hos. And I think the park is showing that by keeping fiends and adding hoards which were in Tampa just last year!! I think the goal of all this is to have ethier a up charge event or an alone style house in the next few years. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out

I think it was more that it took away the parks primary transit system so ppl had to walk everywhere

I think.. wait whoops, I KNOW it was the budget and how much it drained it quicker than dumping a bowl of water out.

Exactly. And thats why it was removed...not because of kids.... I never thought it was great anyway, even with actors

Shafor: when jacks pumpkin express was in operation, the train shut down at 6 and became available only for the haunted train, which started at caribou station and ended there as well

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2012 Rumors

Well I know they had to have doubles for all of the people working the haunted train. Got to factor in also the lighting, entertainment managers pay, make up, fog machines, speaker systems, props, voice overs and the explosion at the end for each train that passes by. I can see how it was a lot of money to run the haunted train but I still enjoyed working it though. Too funny I swear there recordings were saying cuss words in it once you listen to it about 50 million times. I swear over in the cemetery I was hearing and I quote "Get her in her a$$" no no correction I KNOW I was hearing it LMAO

It seems to me that in scare zones or haunted houses, the scare actors don't scare the young ones as much as they do teenagers/adults. Is it just me or do they mean to do that so they don't get alot of complaints?

i've been working HOS for 4 years now, even if they were to say its ok to scare kids, we don't! we try not to cause we know it can traumatize. if they ask or just happen to be near when we scare we can't help it but we try not to. as far as teens........those are the bread and butter!

in fact one of the guys in my group last year scared a lady ,accadently, who had a stroller...........when she screamed, she dumped her stroller, thankfully the kid was laughing on the ground. but that guy we happly call "strollermaster" now! :-D

as far as tearing down Illuminights i have a buddy who starts today working as tech, he said he will start tearing down everything starting at 5 tonight. techs are working 5-8 starting tonight, 15 hour days, i feel for him!

and ty for welcoming me jmu2011, i look forward to enjoying it with the rest of you!
I have to say I've taken both of my children to Howl-O-Scream for years my daughter (14) and my son (5) and they have never been intentionally scared by any of the actors. We were fully aware that they are fair game because they are in the park. But we really appreciate you guys for not intentionally trying to scare them when they were young. I love that my daughter is fair game and a target now. It makes Howl-O-Scream so much more fun watching her scream. :D
