RE: Howl-O-Scream 2012 Rumors
Just because Alone has supreme high end quality doesn't mean BGW can replicate or even do better than that house. Sorry, by "we" I was referring to the group of people that said $40 is way to high.
Let me explain my thinking like this:
1) This is the first year BGW would do an upcharge house. Being the first year has everything to do with it. They may not have a high end budget this year to construct a house as great as or better than Alone. In fact, it may be on par with Deadline. Just because one house did well in one area doesn't mean the same house will do just as great in another.
2) The free shirt and picture do make a difference, but how far is the park willing to go to get you in this house for $35 - $40? Personally, they may not even offer a free shirt or picture. If they don't, then $40 is definitely too high. This house would have to be extreme supreme quality. If they just offer a picture, I don't see that affecting the price much. If they offer just a shirt, I can see that adding $10 to the initial price. If they offer both, I could see that adding $15 to the initial price. The house alone I would say $20 maybe, with a shirt and picture $35 - $40.
3) Target audience is key for this house to work. What is the main crowd consist of during Howl-o-Scream? What kinds of crowds come to the park that time of year? This is the time of year when tourism starts to really die down. So you won't see too many tourists, and you end up with the locals and pass holders. The city and area itself isn't hot spot night life central, and that could be one of the reasons they stay so family friendly, but there is still a good group of the party life to appeal to. So with mostly families coming in, most of the them probably have season passes and probably about a very good part of those families are probably teenagers looking for good scares or parents out by themselves, its hard to say but I would guess not many of them will be looking to spend $40 on a house UNLESS it comes with more than just a 3-5 minute walk through. Thats when the shirts and pictures come in. Still do the have enough of the crowds and do those crowds have enough of their target audience to justify a high cost on a new experience that may turn out very bad and lousy?
4) Quality of the house does do a good job of determining a price, but does the park have enough money to go out on a limb and open a new house with supreme quality? And not just the quality of the house but the amount of possible scares in the house? Will they end up spending more than they make? I think with this house, if they do put their all into it, we will loose so much. The scare zones, shows, and houses besides this one will suffer a significant loss of funds and they loose their overall quality. I think the park would play it safe and open it with Deadline like quality and with a minimal price just to test the waters.
Overall, like I said, $15 - $20 is a good safe price. Remember how they started their full service restaurant? It really didn't change much for their regular restaurants, they just added a few basic things to make it into what it is, a good attempt but an overall fail. I think it may be similar with this. The house is going to be just a bit better than what they regularly come out with but it may not be as impressive as you think.
The concept may = WOW
The execution may = Disappointment
I'm just not trying to over hype this house for what it may be. Word of mouth is just too risky for them to do especially with a new concept they haven't tried before. I'm just saying its new for the park and they are probably just going to test the waters with it this year and if things look good, next year we will see some more better things. Look at Christmas Town, price was low when it started, it did well so price went up and the overall quality of the event went up.

If so, most of their tours offer photo CD's and offer a whole lot more and cost about $30 on average. I would imagine, $10 - $15 for their first year fits just about right.
That's your opinion.
To me, walking to the top of Griffon is no big deal. I've done it on other coasters, so I'm not paying for it and it's not a deciding factor at all for me to pay for a tour. Same thing with a maintenance bay. For you, could be an experience you want, so you will pay for it.
But being in a house...at the caliber that Alone has been...having all the scaractors know my name...up in my face...and being
alone at that...that's an experience I want and I'm willing to pay for. $10-$15 is way too low, and personally I would be concerned about the quality if that is the price they come at us with.
Doesn't matter, by a whole lot more I specifically mean just that, more activities and more things going on.
- Going to the top of Griffon,
- Visiting 3 coasters maintenance areas,
- Riding 4 coasters once on tour,
- Riding all 4 again priority after the tour,
- A photo CD,
- and Free Preferred Parking
is just so much more. There is more going on, more activities, and more things you do and more things you get. Yes you may not be the target audience for this tour but it is still plenty to do for $65.
You want to be alone in a haunted house? Stand in line and be the first in it. I was the first person to go through Harvest Hollow one evening, yes it was more intense than when others were there, but if I can do the same with good planning, why the pay the extra price?
