RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

From what I was told, they ran into some large electrical-related problems last year which couldn't be resolved before Howl-O-Scream. I agree with Chris, it's probably a project of very high importance to them this year.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

I Just hope they make it scary... I mean really, that's all I'm asking for yet it seems like im asking too much.

Oh and the scare zones... They all should be like Harvest Hollow, or atleast have as much effort in them as Harvest Hallow. It's easily Comparable to some Scare zones at more High profile parks. I understand building 5 Harvest Hallow areas isnt possible and the budget wouldnt likely allow for it, but the amount of props and scare actors in Harvest Hallow Divided up among the scare zones in the park would be pretty nice...

I just dont understand why BGE Only really places off walk way props and and sprinkling of actors in their scarezones... I always thought the point of a scare zone was to congest or add objects to a path and provide eye catching props and other visual distractions to allow scare actors to move in a crowd and scare people more effectively...

Guys standing around with chainsaws will scare people... But guys popping out of nowhere with chainsaws, or catching you while your staring at the pretty scanner (moving light) on the walkway or that scary looking prop and popping out behind some random uninteresting crate(or other in theme uninteresting object) will scare more people. A little fog and a strobe or two wouldnt hurt either...

Edit: And for the record, I know that the chainsaw dudes last year would pop out from behind walls and doorways, But once you saw it happen a few times, you knew exactly where they were hiding, and they were all on the edge of the pathways... You walk through the middle and keep your eyes on the edges of the path and you werent afraid or scared by the dudes standing in the middle you were good. Had there been props on the pathway and other things such as weird moving lights, A bit of fog, even a strobe set a very low setting they could have improved each area and made it 25x scarier by forcing guest to move around the props and look at them... And I know People are gonna argue that these things would make it so much scarier... But If you are gonna have chainsaw guys out who are gonna scare small children anyway, a few lights and distracting props shouldnt be scaring them any more than the scare actors would be, These things would just be making it easier to scare guest who arent... you know, small children and require just a bit more than a guy standing around in makeup or a mask to scare them....

And and before someone cries budget, If Busch Gardens cant afford a couple of scanners a strobe and a mount or a few crates(or other props like it) painted and garnished differently for each area... I guess that my part time minimum wage making self has more money to throw away on these things than Busch has to INVEST...

oh and another thing, they need to put scare actors in Oktoberfest cause last year there was NONE, the only place there were scare actors were in the lines of the FP houses, and scare actors in scotland too

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

You ever sent an email to bg? I see what you're saying. Maybe someday the park will decide if this is a kids or adult event. I still find enough stuff to do to keep me entertained.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

See here's my problem (I know this has been said before but I'm going to say it again ;)

Ok so BGW has no competition when it comes to it's park. Yeah there's Kings Dominion, but that place is so dirty and the employees aren't that friendly either. Right now, the only thing they're good for is rides and their Halloween event. They'll never take away buschs awards or reputation and BgW is the only thing like it for miles...the only reason Busch has to continue expanding and adding new stuff is so that people will continue to travel to the park and they're not just stuck with the locals. They really don't have any pressure on them to make HOS any scarier than it has been because they know people will come no matter what. Yes, we would all like to see this become an event that can be compared to Universals Halloween event, scare wise. Busch just needs to. Make up it's mind on if it wants to be Halloween Horror Nights or Mickeys Not-so-scary Halloween party. Not trying to amalgamate the two into one. Williamsburg is full of families with little kids so they can't totally take out all the things that the families can do with little kids. If they just keep England and FoF non scary and make Scotland and the Pompeii area a little bit scary and the rest of the park like OMFG WTF I CRAPPED MY PANTS scary then we'd all be happy.

Just saying =)

Unfriendly employees you say? Dirty you say? Ha. That seems like what everyone always says in regards to a rival themepark when there really is nothing wrong with it. KD is a "themed amusement park"(As they call themselves on their website) Some theme, some plain amusement. They execute it well. They have more rides, More variety and some of their attractions execute "Themeing" Far better than Busch has done as of late... Compare Griffon to i305... Though I think i305 is tacky it really is themed better... Has the Nascar style gate around the track, themed trains, prop outside of the queue... Griffon Has a queue video of a mythical bird and some time period accurate chandeliers in the station, and im not even sure about that.

KD is currently offering a $35 ticket special... If KD was only 15 miles from Busch, who would be getting all the business? $35 and more rides or $60+ and less attractions and pretty flowers? I love BGE and it will always hold a special place in my heart... But the park is suffering some serious Disney syndrome right now ("Were so good, were the best so we shouldnt try hard") Just cause they apparently get more business doesnt mean they are the best. You are pretty much saying because people are gonna come, they should stop trying... They could be the best, but they seem to have "stopped trying"... KD is gaining momentum... Oh and FYI Cedar Fairs as a whole experienced a 22.5% increase of attendance in their parks, meaning more and more people are going to KD. Busch "Not trying" Is the last thing they should be doing as a company right now....

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

Not trying? How can you say that? They are adding one ride to each park this year and a new roller coaster next year. The theming for it will put the themeing for I305 to shame. The theming KD does never makes sense to me, it doesn't go with anything. They have I305 a Nascar theme right next to Flight of Fear and the UFO theme. I do enjoy the rides at KD, my biggest complaint is the noise. They pipe the music in so loud you can't hear the person next to you unless they shout. Spending a day at Kings Dominion is exhausting just for that. The whole point though is how can you say they aren't trying?

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

Im talking more in the lines of the Halloween event. Also like I said, compare Griffon to I305. Why does Griffon's theme not exist like it does on Alpengeist or LNM? Also when Paramount owned the parks Themeing was relevant for the most part. Only weird thing was placing Italian job in the back of the congo, but even then it was in the back away from the rest of the themed area... Now Cedar Fair went ahead and completely killed the area with intimidator...

What Im saying is the park shouldnt be cutting corners with anything and it seems as of late they have been.

How can you say that? You do not know what the theming will be.

Perhaps...

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

i305 is better themed than Griffon. i305 is better themed than Europe in the Air. i305 is better themed than Mach Tower.

Now let me ask you this: Is the Congo section of King's Dominion better themed than, lets say, France at Busch? No. Nowhere near. You can't compare single rides, you have to compare areas.

KD's Congo area: Tomb Raider, Avalanche, Volcano, Anaconda, Italian Job, The Outer Limits: Flight of Fear, Intimidator 305
Maybe I need to take a trip to Africa, but I don't think those fit together very well.

Sure, KD tries (every so once in a while) to theme rides, but often they take whatever theme they can and drop it wherever they have room.

Also, please explain Dominator's themeing. Parking lot themed? Old parking lot covered in grass theme? I don't know.

As Zoomy said, wait for 2012.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

I was pretty much going to say what you said, Swiftman. In fact, I usually do. I don't think we've ever disagreed about anything.

Anyway, I-305 is definitely themed better than Griffon. Everyone here knows how I feel about Griffon, though. (If you don't know, I think it's representative of Busch in the last five years, and not in a good way). But, like Swiftman said, theming is not just about rides. Griffon feels like it belongs where it stands. Sure, the ride doesn't have as much theming as Alpengeist, but neither does AC, really. When you walk by Griffon, though, you feel like you're somewhere in the French countryside - if the French countryside had 205 foot tall blue roller coasters (but it's OK, because it blends with the sky). When you walk by I-305, you do not feel like you're anywhere near the Congo. In fact, in the entire Congo section of KD, you pretty much don't feel like you're in the Congo. There is a reason why BGW gets so many accolades when KD does not. Has Busch been resting on their laurels lately? Definitely. But, for the most part, they seem to be heading in the right direction now. KD has its niche, and I enjoy it. But me? I'd still take BGW, even if they do cut a few corners.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

You argue you cant compare the rides and should compare the areas... I disagree. I understand your point, and it's a good one BUT...

A rollercoaster is a rollercoaster. A themed area is a themed area. You are telling me we should compare an area themed to France to an Area themed loosely to "The Congo". The whole point I was making was revolving around attractions, and not the parks as a collective whole, therefore I feel comparing the rides to the rides rather than the sections to the sections makes more sense. My point is Busch is lacking something fierce in their Halloween event, Kd's is better and it seems Busch has kind of stopped trying or is not trying as hard... Now, the next rollercoaster probably is gonna be pretty amazing, But Im talking bout the mazes and the Halloween event. I bought Griffon and i305 in here for comparison in where I see the parks as they stand now. I think it's a pretty weak argument to say that "Oh the next one that no one not 'in the know' knows nothing about will be way better than what there is now, just you wait and see"...

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

If you would like a discussion on BGW theming vs KD or Griffon vs i305 please create a thread for it. Let's keep this one focused on the title.

RE: Howl-O-Scream 2011

A high-end condo in the middle of downtown Newport News isn't nearly as good as a middle-range condo with an ocean view.

If we're talking Halloween events, I think Busch is trying to reach some sort of compromise between a Disney Halloween event and a Universal Halloween event. They're not doing very well at it. The last couple of years have been pretty crazy. They have family-friendly attractions that draw all ages, but they also try to have scarezones which, in turn, either terrorize children or have to be made "KID-siderate". As I've said in the past, it just doesn't work. Busch is at a fork in the road and they can't keep standing on the side of the road trying to decide which way to go. The longer they stay there, the more Halloween events are passing them by (including KD's).

I just wanted to add a couple years ago (I want to say in 2005 or 2006)they had something like that near France/Ireland between that area. They had a troll looking thing with a werewolf operating it but of course we didn't know who was operating it so we're staring away at this wierd thing moving and the next thing we know 3 werewolve people are behind us and the one operating the stupid thing jump out and scare the living crap out of us. They should bring that back. I wish Busch would make it scarier. I do bring my 5 year old to the park during Howl O Scream almost everyday they're open but I'm not stupid. I don't go into the haunted houses with her because I KNOW BETTER but the scarezones do need to be scarier though. If parents would use there common sense they're wouldn't be issues of complaints or Busch having to make it kidsiderate. I mean if you take a 4 year old into a 5 pumpkin haunted house it's like don't complain I wish Busch would just close down there Guest Relations when Howl O Scream begins LOL
