It'll be interesting to see what tomorrow brings for this ongoing saga. From what I can tell, Big Top Terror is the only maze that was able to operate on its permit from earlier in the year. The Conjuring, which seems largely unchanged from last season's Fright Fest, received a permit at the same time but also required a new one for some reason (the point of entry for the maze itself stayed the same, but a standalone doorway was added to change where you get the go-ahead from the queue line - is a minor alteration like that enough to trigger the need for another approval?). I did happen to catch a glimpse of the Army of the Dead permit they had on the building door during my visit last Saturday, and its date of issue was 9-27, so it seems they weren't far from having to do yet another 2 maze preview day.

What a mess all of this has been. I'm inclined to stand by the theory that the remaining mazes are sitting there fully prepared with everything sans permit.

And they called last weekend Fright Fest Extreme too. Unless they expressly say more houses are open tonight, we probably just need to keep eyes on the app's wait times.

Did anyone go to Fright Fest Extreme last weekend? If so, could they give a short review of the new opened mazes? Im thinking of checking it out for the SAW and The Conjuring mazes.

On the 4 mazes that opened last weekend:

The Asylum - They did a nice job of nailing the ward/lockup look here for the most part, although some of the plywood used to direct your path stood out and perhaps cheapened the aesthetic a little bit. Tons of props and animatronics throughout the maze (mileage may vary a bit depending on how much you enjoy those). A fair amount of scare actors that were genuinely surprising at times since the setup often led to the belief it was another animatronic standing there instead of an actual person.

Saw - I thought this was a huge improvement from the version they had last year. The location change served it well. Plenty of references to the scenes from the movies and the scare actors looked great. There's one point where the actors can also, at their discretion, split up groups and send them down separate paths. It's not a long split, but it's just jarring enough to be effective. Bonus - somebody in front of me in line was trying to bring their infant into the maze in a stroller (SMH) and the employee at the house entrance successfully discouraged them from doing so.

Army of the Dead - This was my favorite of the new openings and might be my favorite maze this year. The theming is really put together and sets the tone nice for every area. Good scare actor placement, an opener that warns of imminent danger, and a post-apocalyptic Vegas setting executed extremely well. They had lots of space in the old 4D theater building and made good use of it.

The Conjuring - Very similar (if not the same) layout to last year. This was easily one of my highlights from last year, with a foreboding layout and well decorated rooms/corridors. For some reason, I did feel a little underwhelmed by this year's iteration, perhaps because I remember it being so good, or perhaps because of my group placement (I got sent in the middle of 8 people total and those in the front sped through, so the scare actors may not have had time to reset). The maze looked great but felt like it could have had a bit more, especially in terms of scare actor quantity. I'm looking forward to trying it again and seeing just how much I missed out on.

I'll say this also - I wandered past Big Top Terror just before closing time and decided to head in since there was practically no line. The employee there informed me that they were in the process restocking the 3D glasses and I opted to go without them. The difference in the maze with those glasses on is night and day. It's worth waiting for them if you have to.

I received this message in an email from the park this morning. This is a nice gesture after the initial Fright Fest Extreme hard ticket plans fell through.

Might as well finish the job and put the last 3 in here. The green light to allow guests into all of the remaining mazes was given on Thursday, so they made it just in time for everything to be open on the first operating day of October.

Stranger Things - Wow! This is a fantastic maze. A perfect transition from a high school setting to the Upside Down, great flow, action at every single turn, scare actors that look and behave just like characters from the series, good looking props, well executed lighting changes, and nice projection decisions (spiders crawling out of an air vent was a highlight). For being confined a relatively small building, it's filled to the brim with scenery. Virtually no dead zones between scenes. Even the queue has a little bit of extra theming. I got in line for a second go round of this one almost immediately and saw a lot of smiles on people's faces as they exited. A home run.

(It also seems like the building for this could be here for a while, since the park went through the trouble of creating a fully paved sidewalk from the exit door rather than using a gravel path)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - A nice addition that keeps its "Victims" on their toes. This took the place of my beloved Bloodshed trail from last year, so it had a lot to live up to. Bloodshed had a great corn maze section in open air after the initial walk through its starting area, and an imposing chainsaw scare actor waiting within. With this maze being fully contained in an indoor setting, there was no opportunity for utilization of a legitimate gas powered chainsaw, which was a bit of a bummer. There were plenty of revving noises piped in throughout the maze making it difficult to anticipate when actors might jump out, which did add to the thrill. One rather macabre scene made to look like the interior of a bus stood out as especially well done.

Trick 'r Treat - A smaller but action packed maze. Just the right amount of actors and charming (while still spooky) scenery choices. Scare actors were well placed and involved. I didn't really know what to expect from this one but was pleased with the setup.

I was able to repeat some of the other trails as well. I'm happy to say that my second go round for The Conjuring was much better. It made a big difference when the group traveled together. Scare actors were very good and one of them in particular had what could very well be the best form of concealment I've ever witnessed in a haunt - it was so good that, despite watching that same actor reset when I walked through this maze last week, I looked right at their hiding spot and was convinced that they weren't there.

The Asylum seemed to have more scare actors in addition to the animatronics and has a great halfway hanging prop that I neglected to mention in my initial review.

During the path split in Saw, I would recommend taking the right-hand path if not directed to do otherwise, as I thought it had quite a bit more to offer. While Saw unfortunately suffers a bit from some blatantly unhidden electronic controllers on its walls and has a handful of fairly long corridors with nothing going on, the actors in there do a great job. Several of them have to depict torturous actions perpetuated by Jigsaw and they all acted convincingly in accordance with those depictions - not a single one showed signs of burnout from the repetitious movements. Hats off to them for their performances.

Speaking of performances, a change was made to the third act of Unleashed when I saw it on Friday. Don't get me wrong, it was still very good, and the replacement acrobats displayed immense skill while carrying out their difficult routine... It just wasn't the death-defying spectacle that I gushed about in my earlier post about the show. I hope the regular performers are alright, and one of them was just a little under the weather that day or something (their routine requires precision to the point where if somebody so much as coughs or hiccups, it could be catastrophic). Hopefully I can report the return of the original cast the next time I go to see the show.

So I was at the park on Sunday and it was absolutely mobbed. Probably the most crowded I've seen the park in a while. I take it the nice weather and the holiday weekend really brought everyone out.

I didn't have time to do all the mazes due to the crowds. I also wanted night rides so a good chunk of my night was spent waiting for rides. I ended up springing for the basic Flash Pass, but I probably should've sprung for the mid-tier pass. I ended up only doing about 5 mazes of the who knows how many the park had.

In hindsight, I definitely should've started on Nitro side and worked my way to Toro side if I wanted to maximize my haunt experience. That being said, despite spending what's basically my entire paltry paycheck on Flash Pass, mazes and souvenirs, I still had a great time overall.

I'm used to going to HHN and I've experienced Stranger Things, Trick R Treat and TCM at HHN. Uni obviously has a far bigger budget to work with so I won't fault GAdv for being super cheap with the decor, but I found a lot of the decor to be pretty lacking in most of the IP mazes I did. Part of the problem was the huge rooms each scene had. The theming would have a much better effect if the rooms were much tighter. I also wasn't a huge fan of the short length of the mazes I did. Each one felt like it had maybe 5-6 rooms and that was it. The wait times fortunately weren't bad at all for the mazes. I didn't have to wait more than 30 mins for any of them despite how crowded the park was.

I also did the Big Top maze and Witch's Reflection. Big Top was really good, but Witch needed a few more actors. There was a lot of dead space that could've been filled. I got lost once or twice. I do regret skipping the Asylum maze but I paid out the ass for my Flash Pass and I was definitely gonna use it no matter what.

The scare zones pretty much stole the show for me. The fountain zone, the clown zone, and Demon zone all had pretty strong actors. I also loved the set pieces. The pirate zone felt a little sparse and the mine scare zone was ok, but the actors seemed a bit tired.

I don't think I'll do another midnight closing at the park again. It was just too crowded to enjoy anything without spending money on FPs. Maybe I'll go in September as well.

I was at the park last Sunday too and it was much more crowded than I thought it would be. Probably the holiday combined with the nice weather. In the future I will need to remember to avoid the Columbus Day weekend and other 3 day weekends.

That's always been a crazy day-- everyone has the same idea to take advantage of the long weekend.

Well I visited the park the next Sunday and it was still very crowded. Late Oct weekends are just busy for GAdv as Halloween draws closer. Thursdays are less crowded but open drug use by other park guests is worse on those nights. Never seen it so bad before.
