Wow! Nice find! Now if I had decent internet to watch them -_-
*smacks forehead*

Great finds, mwhinva! Those are some things I have never seen before. It looks like the train did have animated scenes throughout the ride, though the figures look a bit creepy, not unlike the lumberjacks at the end of White Water Canyon.

The dolphin show looked like a great show, but where did they keep the dolphins after a show? The performance tank looks very small. Nowadays PETA would be all over that. :p

Notice how the people kept getting stuck on the slide. :p

These are such great treasures, seeing the glory the park used to possess. Hopefully, that's what they'll get back to next year...

I like the lights on the buildings of International Street at the end. :)

I liked Kings Dominion back in the day because it was like old America. I am one of those people that loves Americana stuff, so this was my favorite place as a kid. Now a days it's just lost all that old America magic that it once had. So now I go to old Europe (or what was old :s)

Joe,

The giant slide had so much down time. If there was rain, mist, or fog, the slide was closed. If the wind direction was blowing mist from the 150 foot tall Lake Charles fountain toward the slide, it was closed. Even high humidity in the summer could cause the slide to close. There is a ride crew photo in one of my KD employee yearbooks where each crew member is holding a placard stating every reason why the slide was closed that day!

The Dolphin show started with 2 dolphins. They later expanded the show to include 1-2 sea lions in the performance (The 2 dolphins performed in part of the show and the sea lion(s) performed in the other part).

Sometime in the late 1980's, one of the dolphins that season gave birth at the park to a baby dolphin and they named her "KD" (Sounded like Katy). :) A month or so later, the baby died from a bacterial infection. :( The investigation found that the show facility's water filtration system was faulty and caused the bacteria to build up in the water. Because of that issue and the, then recently passed U.S. Marine Mammal Act; Kings Dominion stopped having the dolphins perform at the park. They fixed the filtration system and the few remaining years of operations featured just 2 seas lions in the show performance.

Keep in mind that Kings Dominion contracted with a marine mammal based entertainment company, located somewhere on the central Gulf coast, to provide the dolphins and sea lions used in the performance as well as their trainers. KD provided the facilities.

Yes, the pool was about 40 feet in diameter and about 10-12 feet deep. There were 2 small pens (10' by 18'), on either side of the trainer's "house/green room", to hold the dolphins/sea lions overnight. The trainer's "house" had 2 floors; the upper floor was for the trainers to shower/change/rest between shows. The lower floor housed the water filtration system and the freezers for the fishes to feed the dolphins/sea lions.

Even though the facility received a major overhaul during the Paramount years for a stage show, the park kept 30%-35% of the original pool retaining wall to support the front of the current stage. The current, center front section of wall that holds up the stage floor for the "All Wheels Sport" show was once part of the retaining wall for the dolphin pool! Use your imagination and follow the the curve of the wall until it comes to a full circle and you have the size of the original pool.

Again, Kings Dominion was not in the Zoo/Marine Mammal business. The dolphin/sea lions and their trainers were provided by a contracted 3rd party company. The African Animals in Wild Animal Safari and their caretakers were provided by a 3rd party company under contract to the park.

All Kings Dominion did was construct the facilities/animal habitats, based on the 3rd party company's requirements. The park just provided the show ushers/usherettes and the monorail crew for the Wild Animal Safari.

Wiki has some interesting history about the Wild Animal Safari company. In its heyday, (1970's - early 1990's), there were 5 Wild Animal Safari parks across the U.S. (Two of which were in the Family Leisure/Taft/KECO park chain | Kings Dominion and Kings Island). They also had parks in Texas and California as well as their original park in central Florida. Now, only the original park in central Florida exists and is still an drive-through attraction.

mwhinva, just so you know, I'm constantly astounded by how much you know about Kings Dominion. I don't comment on the KD history-related stuff often because I don't really have any sort of emotional connection with the place, but I assure you that your insight is much appreciated- even by an outsider like me. :) Thanks for sharing all of this, it truly is invaluable information.

No problem. Glad to share! :)

I think Kings Dominion is getting far enough along in age now where we now have at least one generation, or more, that never knew the park before Paramount took over at the end of 1992. Those now in their mid-20's or younger would only remember the park when it was under Paramount control at the earliest.

I believe it is important to share as much as I can with you guys on this site and KD Golden Years community Facebook site. I share KD information with a couple other fan sites; but, not to the extent that I share here. I think I do as much as I do on KDFANS because of everyone's dedication and concern for BGW, and to a lesser extent KD. You have Nora that manages the BGW Memories Facebook site and all those that support this web site and BGW in general. Basically, I feel that what I am able to share is appreciated and valued here. :shy:

Here is another 8mm film on Kings Dominion. The quality is not the best and the projection flickers badly. Go to the :45 second mark and you will see the Scrambler in action on International street. If you look closely, you can catch a glimpse of the old orange & yellow Cinema 180 theater. But, go to the 1:30 mark and you see the only known video/photo, (That I have found on the internet), of the high dive show on Lake Charles. Even I do not remember the exact year(s) it was performed. It could have been a stand-alone show or combined at some point with the water ski show. See, not even I remember everything!!! :p

Right after that short clip is the closest video of the King Cobra in action that I have found to date. Whoever shot this film could have been in line or just in front of the queue area. It shows the station and exit ramp as well. (P.S. the 1st 44 seconds of the video looks like some sort of church function; KD stuff starts at the :45 mark).

Enjoy!

Thanks Joe, but there are other dedicated folks out there maintaining the history of Kings Dominion. KD Golden Years community Facebook site does an excellent job of telling the story of the park. Grant you, they don't take it to the level of detail that Nora does with her wonderful stories and blog on BGW Memories.

Plus, I don't feel like re-writing everything I have already wrote, too lazy. :p Maybe when I retire and have some time, I could attempt it. (Don't get your hopes up, with my financial situation, I will be 90+ before I can go to the retirement home!) :D

Some more photos from the Land of Dooze Ride. Spoofs of the Doozy's touring the Statue of Liberty (through her feet - notice her painted toenail). YellowStone park, etc.

In one of the pictures posted above, I can see the loading stations for the Haunted River and Smurf Mountain.  Where in the Lost World was Time Shaft located?  Did the tracks for SM and HR interact with one another, or were they in separate parts of the mountain?

When I was wee-little I just had to ride every single car ride in Hanna Barberra land( Or whatever it was called in the early 2000's)  before my family would move on.:)

EDIT: Kidzville( How am I forgetting things so early!)

At that time it would have been called KidZville.  Now that I think of it, that area had a lot of car-themed rides.  There was the Jeep Tours, the Hot Rods, Taxi Jam, Road Rally, Junior Turnpike, and Rugrats Toonpike/Joe Cool's Driving School.  Only the latter three rides (now prefixed with the "Peanuts" theme) are themed to cars anymore.  The others have been demolished or rethemed.

Still, considering the park also had those rides plus Blue Ridge Tollway, Intimidator 305, and Backlot Stunt Coaster, that means Kings Dominion had nine car-themed rides in 2012. What the heck?!

The entrance to the Time Shaft was located just to the right of the 'splashdown' for the HR. There were 2 holes in the mountain, 1 entrance tube, 1 exit.(quite claustrophobic if I might add) Smurf Mountain was located in the TOP of the mountain above the HR. The tracks did not interact. I got some good looks inside the mountain with quite a few ride evacuations where the lights were on.

Well this isn't my memory but, I thought you guys might like it. As teenagers in the 80's my dad and my Uncle worked there. My dad was in tickets and was a four star general. ( On the back) My uncle worked at Hungry Hippo, then games, to end up working at Shockwave. I on the other hand didn't start going to KD till 2001 I think. ( I went to BG first) I think I might have some more stuff I could dig out at my grandparents house. ( Not sure if the photo works)

The Time Shaft entrance was where the 1st launch for Volcano currently is. I have a pic. I will upload it later.
I was 99% sure the volcano launch went down the corridor of the haunted river final drop. Just saw some pictures of the Time shaft entrance still intact. Just sitting there waiting for a re-install :) (Check out the pictures in the comments) https://www.facebook.com/229513350522757/photos/a.232180120256080.1073741829.229513350522757/384969758310448/?type=1&theater

Oh my... I sort of got chills looking at that abandoned space for the ride. Between that and the queue for Land of Dooz/Smurfs(?) above the Volcano queue, I wish Paramount had done a better job of removing so many blatant links to the former rides (well, even as a defender of Volcano, I wish they'd done a better job with the ride period, but I won't get into that :p ...).

As much as I like Volcano, it still makes me sad to think of all the possibilities of great things they could have done had Paramount not removed a heavily-themed boat ride, a dark ride, and one of the park's most legendary flats- all combined in a beautiful mountain structure. Obviously the flume and dark train ride couldn't return, but as Mazakman said- could a ride potentially be brought back to the Time Shaft's spot? As far as I can tell, there's nothing really occupying this spot right now except for the end of a concrete mountain.
