Personally, I think the sun-dial is probably the only consistently working thing at escape from Pompeii. I'd be extremely happy if the whole ride was rethemed to something that worked. I mean major overhaul. New theme, increased reliability, more sundials, less jerks squirting water on me, etc.

DocMoney: You've accused me in the past of saying this, and I have not thought this before you attacked me, but you are over reacting. While I did have respect for you for being an intelligent poster, your attacks towards me for simply having a debate online have lost that respect. You take internet arguments way too personally. Just because somebody disagrees with you on an internet forum, doesn't mean they are attacking you personally or are completely dismissing your opinions. The fun thing about being geeks is that we are able to have these discussions on a level far above that of the GP. I /thought/ that was going on until the post where you clearly are offended.

I'm seeing a divide here with the thanks...maybe we should have a civil war? The mods certainly encouraging it ;)

Pandorazboxx came through with a universally well-liked post, so maybe the healing can begin.

I always spread the "thanks" love around. Even if you disagree with someone's point, it's always nice to give them a thumbs up for a well articulated post. ;)

I don't believe anyone is saying "THIS IS THE END OF THE RIDE, THE HAMLET, AND THE PARK!". People (like myself) are simply saying that we don't like the direction that things like this indicate that the park is traveling in. And honestly, if you're getting emotionally upset over an argument about a sundial at a theme park on an internet forum, it may be time to step away from the keyboard and go to sleep. ;)

Swift truth.

It's a sundial, no big problem. I think people really over react though. I thought I went overboard with the bathroom expansion equals park expansion conspiracy.

It seriously might be the worst change we've run into so far, to me. Not exaggerating.

No offense met to anyone but do you realize you are all arguing over a stupid 30x30 piece of land? I mean the park is hundreds of acres and the whole park is headed in a bad direction over this?!?! Come on people. Think about the big things.

While I liked the camp theming quite a bit and typically agree with Haberdasher and Dr Money, I don't think the sundial is awful. In fact, it's quite feasible that a sundial would be uncovered by an archeological dig of Pompeii. Just ask Vitruvius, the great Roman engineer! That said, as long as the uniforms don't get charlie sheened/bowling shirted and the queue coverings stay as they are, and Vesuvius Tours (or whatever it is exactly) is referenced here and there I'll still be pleased. I do think it sort of fits the area well anyways.

Similar to what someone else said: get rid of the water cannons and you can replace the final falling statue with big bird and I'll be pleased.

I have to throw my two cents in here. What DrMoney has a problem with, I think, is what some Disney fans call "Declining by Degress". Is the sundial a major issue that would keep anyone from going to the park? No. How about painting Ireland pastel colors? No. Forest of Fun? No. Closing down useful pathways for Forest of Fun? No. Loss of theming in Festhaus by replacing authentic-ish entertainment with a kiddie show? No. BBW's waterfall? No. Whatever the hell they've screwed up on Europe in the Air lately? No. The problem lies in the combination of all of these details. Taken seperately, are they a big deal? Usually not. However, once they all start adding up, you will eventually get to the point where you notice "Hey, this isn't the park I used to love!" Can it happen? Sure. Take everyone's favorite whipping park, Kings Dominion. I literally grew up at Kings Dominion. As a child, I'd spend 5-6 days a week at the park while my mother worked at the candy shop. I loved the park. Anyone remember Kings Domnion in the early eighties? Haunted River? Land of the Doos/Smurf Mountain? The chock full of animatronics Yogi's Cave? They were doing things nobody outside of Disney had. My screen name comes from the name of the volcano that the coaster is in. Provided by a show it's opening year in an ampitheater that no longer exists. One of seven show venues that are no longer at the park, by the way. I've seen what happens as a park slowly declines into a blacktop covered carnival. It's not pretty.
So, is a sundial the end of Busch Gardens? Nope. But it's a tiny, tiny step towards it.

^Declining by degrees. That is exactly what I'm talking about. I just hadn't thought to put it that way.

The reason this particular change bothers me so much, is because unlike FoF (which was added expressly to capitlaize on an available property + provide some needed child-oriented attractions) or Entwined showing up in the Festahus (which was done to provide a new "big" show + more child-centered entertainment: two things park goers have been asking for) this change seems to be one where they are purposely detheming an attraction (or decreasing the theming of an attraction) specifically so the area will be less specific and therefore more versatile as a multi-use piece of property.

Thanks for that, Mtpelepele.

Let's not forget that quite a bit of that is attributed to nostalgia even when change is the for the better.

Define "better". Looking at my earlier example, is Kings Dominion "better" than it used to be? Or my other example, is Disney "better" when they don't repaint as often, don't keep up with light bulb replacement, don't have all of the animatronics in a ride working? And to the subject at hand, whether you "got" the theming or not at Pompeii, (and I have to join others in that yes, I "got" the theming there), how is the sundial "better"?

Good for you, you just listed problems that have always been there but recently became more noticeable through forums. So autoanimatronics are supposed to be kept going around the clock and never have issues? They are supposed to pull two E-ticket rides at the same time? Logistics says no, guests say no. Those threads are a dime a dozen of banter on every Disney forum on Earth.

A sundial represents more period Pompeii than random generic tents that are found every. Pompeii has a rich history for engineering and their highly advanced time keeping. That is much better than once again, tents that can be found anywhere and everywhere.

What period? The ride is themed to a modern archeological dig of the ruins of Pompeii, not Roman era Pompeii.
