Genuine question - how do they plan to know whether someone is vaccinated if they aren’t wearing a mask? Because if they plan to rely on people’s honor, that’ll be…interesting
No clue. I'm guessing it's gonna be a "sucks to be you" if you aren't vaccinated and get sick.
And most likely people who aren’t vaxxed will accept that proposition.
The exact text from the press release.
"The state mask mandate will be lifted for those who are vaccinated at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday in accordance with CDC guidance. Those who are not vaccinated are strongly Encouraged to wear a mask."
I am just getting off work and haven't had a chance to dig into the actual official order but judging from their press releases at a STATE level its no longer required for anyone but strongly recommend for non vaccinated people. It does specifically mention that localities and business may have their own mandates so don't expect that it will go away completely.
I hate to be a broken record but kids under 12 CANNOT be vaccinated and forcing parents into the position of having to weigh the “it’s not as serious for kids but there’s always a chance it could be” factor is messy for theme parks appealing to families.

Yea I’ll take my chances against a virus with a 99% recovery rate. So keep your vaccines.

Given that Universal has dropped its mandate, only a matter of time before Disney and SeaWorld follow.

I think it’s completely reasonable for BGW to drop outdoor masks and keep indoor masks.
But the need for outdoor masks is CLEARLY over (and has been for a while)
Universal's new policy is what I have always expected to see the industry move to as we start to get out of this mess. No outdoor mask mandate except in queues with mask mandates remaining in place indoors. Hopefully we see SEAS follow Universal's lead.
I’d expect Disney to follow within a week and SEAS to be completely silent for 3 months, like usual
I think it's easy for people with no young kids to not understand this perspective. For myself, the surprising move for these parks so far has been the loss of mask coupled with the removal of all social distancing as well; keeping the distance mandate would likely make people in your position a little less wary of coming out with unvaccinated tiny people.
I actually disagree with this. I've always pushed back against the "99% recovery rate!!" argument because that number is somewhat misleading and doesn't take into account the simple law of large numbers (1 percent is a lot of people).
But for kids under the age of 18, the risk posed by COVID is much, much smaller. According to the CDC's official numbers, only 287 Americans under the age of 18 have died from COVID since the pandemic began. That's less than 300 people out of the entire youth population in the US, after the virus has run rampant for more than a year. For comparison, the CDC reports that 182 children died of the flu and 717 died of pneumonia during the same time period. The American Academy of Pediatrics calculates that the mortality rate of COVID for children is less than 0.03%.
I think taking this stance against against the park, when the risk of COVID seriously affecting children is so remarkably low, is over-cautious.
