The point is, do you think they should shut down for months on end? This will be the situation every day for a long time.

It will only last for months if places like BG still open. If the correct decisions continue to be made across the country (sports shutting down etc) then it will lessen the effects.

It will be much shorter if more drastic steps are taken...example: Apple is already opening up all their stores in China again. That certainly wasn’t months.

I’d announce today that it won’t open for at least 2 weeks and that the status will be updated every Friday going forward.

To be honest; not enough is known about this virus to say that mass gathering places closing takes care of it long term.

No, but there seems to be professional consensus that it limits the monumental spikes in cases that our healthcare system can not handle right now. From what I understand, we expect A LOT of people to get Coronavirus at this point—but the goal is to pace ourselves so that everyone doesn’t get it at the same time (the Italy situation).

Oh that’s not the part I was countering. What I was countering is that it dies out because we restrict large gatherings. It’s only been a week in China and we don’t know if it spiked again yet or not.

Maybe others have a more educated opinion on this, but I feel like (especially since the work day has now started) BGW / SEAS would have already announced the closure of their parks. I feel like it's too late to do it now...

BUT then again there was supposed to be a Formula 1 race this weekend, and less than 2 hours away from the first practice session they officially announced the cancelation of it, so I guess that's as late as it could be ?.

I think the major folks (Disney, Universal, et al) announced until the end of March and then it'll be "wait and see".
Do you think that those closures are because they are more of an international/national destination year round, where as BGW is more of a regional destination this time of year? A lot of people will drive a long time to get to WDW or Universal this time of year, but you don't see so many people traveling from 6+ hours away just to go the parks. It wouldn't surprise me if SEAS knows where people generally come from (why they do zip code surveys) and know that the first few weeks are mainly the SE VA crowd and that it wouldn't be much more dangerous than going to a crowded Sams Club to get TP right now.

If I were laying money on it, I’d expect an announcement this afternoon/evening—possibly after the markets close. That said, knowing SEAS, they could announce they won’t be opening their parks first thing tomorrow morning and I wouldn’t be surprised. Basically, I don’t think it’s ever too late for BGW to make that call.

It’s not about “taking care of it” it’s about slowing the spread to allow for resources to catch up

Right but what we don’t know yet is if there would be a “reboom” or spread if large groups were allowed to gather again.

I get the wanting to slow the spread to better understand testing. But what is going to happen if China opens things up again and the virus starts to spread fast again?

And not to get too political here: the test exists, it’s out there, our country doesn’t want to use that one, and we waited to start developing it. There really isn’t a need to “slow the growth to allow resources to catch up” as much as “accept the help out there”. Oh and allow anyone to get tested not just what the government arbitrarily says is test worthy.

I’d rather try to stop the growth as much as possible than just say F it and go on like nothing is happening
And resources isn’t just referring to the tests to detect it.
The healthcare infrastructure (hospitals, beds, employees etc) isn’t ready for this. I’d rather give as much time as possible so they aren’t bombarded with outbreaks all across the country

That’s not what I’m saying at all so ok. You keep skipping the point that I’m making to hammer on the immediate point.

Just a note: We’re skewing off-topic here. It’s a good discussion, but it should probably shift to the General Discussion Corona thread.

Discussions revolving around a call regarding sneak peek seem fine here, but delving into broader topics should probably happen elsewhere.

I think this weekend should be called off....they can announce that it will be reevaluated next week and a decision made then for the following weekend. Williamsburg schools are now closed as well. There really shouldnt be that much to discuss this morning for SEAS chain wide......they could call it now so everyone can plan, guests, employees, everyone. Believe me I would love nothing more than to be there at 7am tomorrow morning lined up at the ticket booth but at this point I could understand. Heck look at past times they have closed for weather, some days it was just light rain but they closed because of the possibility of severe weather.

Stuff in china has been closed for months, and they expect to see a new wave of cases as quarantine measures end. The aim of social distancing is to slow the progression of spread so hospital capacity isnt exceeded, not trap and contain the disease (this is not expected to be possible at this point). The better we contain it, the longer this goes on.

In Williamsburg, just 1 elementary school at this moment (Matthew Whaley). The college isn't having in-person classes, but employees are still expected to come in.
