This is a great article regarding Covid-19.

"Countries that are prepared will see a fatality rate of .05-.09%. Countries that are overwhelmed will have a fatality rate of 3-5%."

We need to flatten the curve.

Sorry for the double post.

Article in tomorrow's Orlando paper as hotel occupancy dropped 12% last week...

My ueducated guess is that this will affect some people but regular flu strains and your average run-of-the-mill diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer will all independently take more lives than covid-19 will in the US. Part of the reason is that unlike other countries, we tend to live a little less densely - there aren't as many cities where most residents live in towers close together but instead are a bit more spread out in houses and larger apartment complexes in the suburbs.

So our chances of getting out there and riding coasters won't change drastically unless there is a massive outbreak that forces these business from operating/generating revenue.

1. Just because most won't die doesn't make it somehow not a devastating event. Imagine everyone sick as shit at the same time. Kids. Husbands. Wives. The elderly. All simultaneously experiencing a disastrous flu. And not just kind of sick. Runaway fevers. Nonstop body aches. Coughing and wheezing for days on end. That's what we're dealing with. Not the run of the mill, kinda scratchy throat shit.

2. Just because we are less densely populated doesn't mean that will magically stop the spread. It might lag a few days behind the critical mass everywhere else but it will undoubtedly spread all the same. Again, our system is not ready for this.

3. If I was a betting man, my money would be on most everything being shut down within 3 weeks time. That includes BGW. And even if it is open, I would highly suggest staying away and not exposing yourself. YMMV

I agree it's not a particularly great idea to expose yourself to such a bad virus by going to any place with known crowds.

That said I think it's also really tough for any company relying upon physical labor as their main means of revenue generation, especially any seasonal business such as BGW or KD or any other theme/amusement to have to keep their gates shut.

Granted, subscription sales (as that's what memberships and seasons passes at these parks more or less are) can help cushion revenue losses, if in-park purchases are as much of a core revenue generator then it's essentially a much harder choice for a business to basically cut off a main revenue stream they rely upon vs. opening to serve customers that are willing to risk it with employees that may be relying upon the money and are also willing to risk it.

Btw, the density issue I mentioned was thinking about if people were attempting to be risk-averse and avoiding social situations. If you live in dense enough housing, the chances that you could still get infected in my mind raise above those that live in less dense housing that's more prevalent in this big-ass country of ours.

I think people are missing the reasons for the increased fear over COVID-19. The main point, as I understand it, isn’t the severity of the disease or the mortality rate. The essential issue it how quickly and quietly it spreads. Most people don’t know they have it and whether they are contagious. Given the long incubation period, people are innocently infecting others. The more people who have it, the greater the likelihood that those who are vulnerable will contract it. The herd needs to take steps to prevent further spread throughout society.

So, perfectly healthy-seeming people could be infecting others at places like theme parks. Those people could be vulnerable, themselves, or in turn pass it on to others. Going places where there are large crowds is simply becoming more and irresponsible, because it endangers the larger group.

This.

I only want to add; on top of that you have people (whether serious or not) saying things like "If I had Coronavirus I'd go to BGW and touch everything". This is legitimately something I read tonight.

In other news, I just read something that probably should have been obvious but didn't really register in my mind till I saw someone talking about it:

Schools all over are cancelling field trips and all other away-from-school activities left and right. Many of the regional parks rely on attendance from things like band and cheerleading meets to make opening on certain days make financial sense. Last year there were Fridays at BGW during the spring where I swear it felt like there were 20 normal guests sharing a park with thousands upon thousands of school kids. Without that attendance... Ouch.

That sounds like a threat of physical harm to me. BGW should trespass them.

Just curious, have they ever done that for something someone said/did outside of the park? I don't know anything about what they typically ban people for.

At risk of sounding cold-hearted...

That might be a great day to marathon BfE. No lines means you'd be able to get in at least 40 cycles. Guaranteed puke bucket at the end of it all.

Ouch. Charter bus drivers. Just thought of that one too.

Welp. We'll know in a few weeks if it's terrible or a threat to our way of life. The stock market is fucked and COVID hasn't even hit its stride yet. Makes me wonder how much we should care about the market to begin with as the basic measurement of our economic health.
