The only thing we actually know about both prevalence and lethality is that we don't have enough data to assess either. Until more comprehensive testing begins, we have no way to determine how many people have contracted the virus. Even when real testing begins, asymptomatic people and those who think they just have a mild cold/flu still won't be tested. So, all of the statistical comparisons are essentially meaningless.

Very true, you cannot make a complete statistical analysis until all of the data has been collected. Collection cannot be complete until no one is catching the virus anymore and we are sure it is not spreading unknowingly. My point was to all of the false info out there like Jahrules pointed out with some actual sources, ie the CDC.

Here's an interesting breakdown of cases worldwide by age, sex, demo...

And breakdown by location, number of active cases (obviously this will change by the time you read it), etc.

I think I must have not been clear.

I'm saying that because there aren't enough test kits and because most people with it will never see a doctor, there is no way to estimate how many people have gotten it so far. Thus, we don't know the current prevalence or death rate. So, comparing US statistics is futile.

My sister-in-law has a colleague from Italy. He told her this about the situation in Italy:

"I have an Italian coworker who's elderly father just got fever and cough. There are simply not enough ICU ventilators, so in Italy they are prioritizing people younger than 60 with higher chance of survival. It is basically war time medical triage. People with other medical issues are told not to come to hospitals as all medical stuff is with covid. His uncle's chemotherapy is on hold."

What's the commonality between Italy and the US? In Italy almost no one took COVID-19 seriously and it has blown up with terrible consequences. Now I'm not saying we should panic, but the way so many people here are brushing it off and saying, like Sergeant Shultz, "I see nothing!" is very concerning. Not helped by the Sergeant Shultz in charge.

The good news is that at least some organizations are taking it seriously. The University of Maryland College Park is now going to be closing the campus (mostly) for at least 3 weeks after Spring Break (next week, so at least through April 10th) and all teaching during that time will be done online. It will stay open for international students who are living at UMD and for some other things, but the vast majority of students will be learning from home.

As I sit in my office building where the first VA case was confirmed, I shake my head thinking what I'm doing now could just as easily be done from home, limiting my interaction and physical contact with people, thus lowering the overall risk of exposure and transmission FOR EVERYONE.

But hey, at least I have a bottle of Purell sitting next to my keyboard. That's something.

University of Illinois U-C (closest college to me) is considering shutting down for two weeks after spring break. They already have mandatory quarantine for anyone who goes out of the country or travels to a county with a high COVID-19 concentration within the US. So far no cases in the county though.

I tried searching amazon for foaming hand sanitizer and all it turns up is foaming hand soap. Where do you get this stuff? I suppose this could just be a case if it all being sold out, but I think there'd be an "unavailable" link or two.

My wife tells me that MD Governor Larry Hogan was on TV today and said that Maryland schools may be closing soon. Closing grade schools is going to be a burden on many, but not closing schools and having the virus spread unchecked is not a good outcome. We may all have to suffer before this thing is over with. For my wife and I it's not a problem. One kid in high school, one in College. But for parents with kids in middle school and lower, they are going to have to stay home with their kids.

I guess Las Vegas is "Amusement" so I'll add a few confirmed things I've been told-

One of the large conventions of the year is NAB (broadcasters) in mid April. They've cancelled the convention.

MGM International has closed all of their buffets in all of their hotels (Bellagio, MGM Grand, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, etc.

All resorts are going full on in sanitation efforts, etc.

Room rates are dropping hourly.
