RE: Christmas Town Dash 8K - 2013

So, I really want to try to do this if they do it again this year. I know it's way early, but I was wondering if you did any training beforehand? I'll never be able to run it with my weak ankles, but I think if I work my way up to it I could be a fast paced walker and complete the course.

Yes.  I definitely trained.  I merely walked, albeit fast for a big guy.  I had been hiking in the woods about four times a week for three months.  Each hike was 3-6 miles.  I lost a bunch of weight during this time as well.  I'm not really interested in running it ever, but I may jog here and there a little next year.  Also it is cheaper if you sign up earlier in the year; like 30 bucks in March as opposed to 55 in November (or something along those lines).  Keep in touch.  I think we are going to put together a pretty good group of FANs next time!! :)

RE: Christmas Town Dash 8K - 2013

Suffice to say my training for this race was not as much as I wanted, and because of this I was quite nervous. I had intended to attempt to walk the 3.1 mile to ensure I could do it, but I failed to do so. I finished the race despite all this, but I would not recommend it.

You can register today! The site is live; however, I fail to see any price on the website without trying to register.

RE: Christmas Town Dash 8K - 2013

I clicked through because I considered doing it for a hot second.

Prices-
Christmastown Dash 8K- $35
Running of the Chick-Fil-A Cows- $10

RE: Christmas Town Dash 8K - 2013

Thanks for all the info! I joined the Y this past year to lose some weight but also gain some strength. Endurance will be my big hurdle to overcome. I think I'll try the treadmill at various inclines. Then when BG opens I'll have to do some fast paced walking on the less busy weekdays.

I'd register early but I'm afraid if I do then I'll have a relapse in my previous health issues and not be able to go. I'll think about it a bit longer before registering. I just really want that medal on my Christmas tree! XD

Cool, I will. :) Big and Tall at BGW seems a good description for me as well!

That is one second longer than I.

They need to move this to Saturday imo, 55 bucks is a lot to charge for a race so you might as well provide breakfast from CFA for runners/walkers

Might I suggest going to the park on the busiest of days and trying your fast paced walking. It can help you work on patience, dodging blockades of people, managing crowds, and so much more.

The race package came with quite a few perks.  One was some coupons for some free Chick-fil-A sandwiches.  Another was a free day pass for one person at BGW.  There was healthy snacks like granola bars, bananas and water bottles made available. Also got a really neat "technical" racing jersey, not to mention the lovely medal/tree ornament and just getting to be in the park when it is practically empty. You could also bring some new toys to receive even more benefits if you wish. Even though this was a fun day and exercise with friends, the mission was to support those who have less. So worth 35 or even 55 bucks. Sunday mornings, as I understood it, are when most of the participants would be available to visit the park. I have some more pics that I'll load up later today when I get home.

$35 is a good price IMO. Not done a race before but I expect that some are much higher priced. I think it would be fun to be in the park before opening. I haven't looked back through the posts but the site says the park plays Christmas music during the race; I think having that atmosphere plus a sweet medal is worth the price. Especially if that free ticket is transferable to another person; I could take a family member for free the following year.

Awesome! That was my concern, as I plan on being a passholder for the foreseeable future.

To me this is the key point.  Admission prices for charity events should not be judged entirely by the value of the activities and gifts alone.  The point is the donation to others; not what you get for your money.

RE: Christmas Town Dash 8K - 2013

Don't get me wrong; I understand it is for charity. I always check to see if these sort of events go to charities that actually do good. I just find that medal an attractive looking bonus to hang on my Christmas tree this year! (as an ornament addict)
