I know this is Williamsburg, but I found it odd Tampa is reusing the dark side of the gardens event theme. Honestly i wish both would for a while but not under these times 😂

The terror is spreading… and this year, something sinister is slithering your way 🐍

Meet the Terror-Tories coming to Howl-O-Scream:

🧙‍♀️ NEW: Witch’s Way (Verbolten Plaza)
Beneath its cursed canopy, evil witches and ancient crones command the enchanted woods while twisted vines and haunted foliage close in around you. Lose your way, and the forest may claim you forever.

🐍 NEW: Viper Valley (Festa Italia)
Once a lively festival honoring the legends of the Amazon, this celebration is now overrun with slithering snakes, ready to strike around every twist and turn.

Disgrotesque needs to hit the road along with the people that decided to bring it back 🫩🙃
With Les Frites there I wish they could do some scary French Fry theme, like giant French fry presses with body parts oozing out. Actually, I’d be happy with just some twisted/spiral potatoes on sticks like they have at Hersheypark and HHN

Both of those themes sound intriguing, but I’m skeptical of the locations they chose for those scare zones.

If Viper Valley is in the same spot as the most recent Festa scare zones — the plaza in front of Tempesto — then I worry it’s doomed to fail. That open plaza provides nowhere for actors to hide and nothing for them to work with. Worse, as a guest, there’s no sense of immersion because of how open the area is, and I find the plaza setup makes it awkward to experience because of how small the space is. Unlike a path-based scare zone, you can’t just walk through and expect to get much out of the experience — you have to sort of awkwardly stand there or walk in circles to stay within the zone.

When I read the Viper Valley description, I hoped it would be located in the Wild Reserve. Thematically, a snake theme works there. And I think the path alongside Lorikeet Glen has had some of the park’s most effective scare zones because of how narrow and enveloped by foliage it is.

Still, if the park insists on using Festa for the scare zone, I would have preferred the Festa bridge as the location. The previous scare zones that have been there were effective because of the defined, confined path the zone occupied.

Likewise, for Witch’s Way, if “Verbolten Plaza” literally just means the open area between Verbolten, Pretzel World, and Prost Patio, I have the exact same concerns. The reference to a “canopy” makes me wonder if they’ll incorporate the Prost Patio into the zone, and that could be a really cool and unique experience if they semi-enclosed Prost Patio and made it into a sort of mini house — a bit like the scare zones KD usually puts in the Arbor tunnel.

Another option might’ve been the path between Oktoberfest and Rhinefeld, another relatively narrow and defined path that would provide a perfect sense of immersion and confinement. The scare zones they used to have there were effective too. They could even use the existing Oktoberfest arches to drape fabric and create a sort of tunnel.

I don’t know why the park insists on the laziest, least effective setup for their scare zones. Are the scare zones still produced in-house instead of being outsourced to a company that knows what they’re doing?

I understand why Viper Valley is in Italy, since it is paired with Anaconda (which is in Roman Rapids), but I agree with those that are observing how wide open that space is. It seems like it will be challenging to make that look claustrophobic and jungle like. With Stalker Street gone, hopefully they at least have good theming in New France. That is one of the best locations for scarezones because of how easy it is to change the lighting and have people hiding everywhere. (Though nothing will beat when they used to have werewolves in the Jack Hannah area a thousand years ago)

Really wanted to go to HoS this year. I'm not a fan of snakes. I'm already freaking out over it, and there's no way I can do that house. Not sure we'll go. :(
