Stopped in last night and had a few things:
  • The Canada Sausage and Cornmeal Porriage from the rotating retro menu—so delicious! I never expected to have polenta I would enjoy at BGW but it was cooked perfectly, and the venison gameyness really came through.
  • Kālua Pork Slider—really satisfying combo of salty, acidic and sweet. I still mourn the loss of the SPAM version, but this is a winner on it's own merits. Probably my second favorite thing I had.
  • Crispy Shrimp Taco—My love, my light, my delicious addiction. I don't think I can come to BGW anymore and not want at least one of these.
  • Bananas Foster Cheesecake & Brazilian Lemonade—a delicious desert combo to finish the evening, although I was getting a bit chilly by the end of the lemonade.
Overall had a really positive experience! Really excited for the continuing rotating menu...

😍

A few pics of some of the decorations put up for F&WF. Not sure if the one on the side of O'Taters is new or if I just didn't notice it before.

Has anyone here complained about the lack of proper allergen info at Food and Wine booths? I know of at least one, if not two booths I visited today that did not disclose that certain dishes contained nuts. While I am not anaphylaxic, this took me very off guard and I intend on bringing it up to the park before I leave.

Out of curiosity what did they say?

Honestly, I got distracted and forgot to stop in since we ended up closing the park. I am going back in a few days and have plans to meet up with a few old pals who are still there. They may know better people to talk to since at least one is in a park-wide position and very connected.

Yikes, as someone with both a shellfish and tree nut allergy, this is concerning. What were the dishes? Do they typically contain nuts or was it more unexpected?

It was the Bananas Foster Cheesecake from the French Quarter for sure (visible walnuts on the top) and I believe there were walnuts in the Apple Crisp (VA stand), but I'm not 100% sure. I was half way through the apple crisp and my wife said "I think there's walnuts mixed in with the oats." Right then was when I bit down on what definitely felt like a partially baked walnuts and not a hard oat. Neither dish said it had walnuts or any allergens in it, nor was there a generic warning that said some dishes contain nuts or was processed on equipment that also processes nuts.

So one more update, I brought it to the attention of my guy and he was mortified by this report. He is going to bring it up to a VP he knows and is on the F&W team to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Sorry for the necropost, but if you guys have anything to say about this stuff, I think you're forgetting about school lunch.

Maybe I’m missing your point, but it appears to me that you are saying that we shouldn’t review and critique the offerings at a food and wine festival, because institutional food (not prepared for an event centered on interesting culinary experiences) is bad? How are these things related?

Sorry. I'm not, it's simply a side comment. I really appreciate what you write about all the food and I just thought I'd mention that the rough comments for the low-rated food such as the mac and cheese just reminds me of what people say of school lunch. I'm not one to comment as I don't eat much of either, so don't read into my comments too much. Also that particular comment about food storage reminds me of the "school lunch is warehouse food from the 1990s stored in a dark closet" conspiracy theory that I hear constantly.
