The worst part is that that came up on the google news front page. Even if not many people read it I'm sure there's a lot of people like me who go through and read all the heaines.

Seems pretty level-headed until you get to SeaWorld's response at the end. I imagine most vets or marine biologists deal with the same kind of stuff explained in the article. That one ex-trainer, Krissy Dodge, didn't seem to be cut out for the job.

"Or SeaWorld management and investors can hit the reset button. Begin a program to provide a better life for the whales it has in captivity.."

Wait. What? Where have they been? I don't care whether or not they think it was a publicity stunt. Did they not see that SeaWorld is investing insane millions fore these animals to have a bigger, more enriching environment? I don't know what else they could expect them to do.
Whether they show it or not, I am sure that SeaWorld is well aware that most people won't care about these enhancements. They know those people won't likely change. The fact of the matter is that they're still doing it anyway.Notice, every time you hear "Blackfish" mentioned, you never hear anything about the sources. If anyone heard about the sources, then maybe people wouldn't be buying into this as much.
People are all too eager to get mad at "evil corporations". That's because so many of them exist. The problem is, they're going after the wrong corporation. I'll bet that all of the real "inhumane institutions" are laughing right now, because while they do their dirty work, they are able to slip it past everyone. Does anyone know what a scapegoat is? I guess people forget everything they learned in history class. To me, this is one of the most depressing reoccurring headlines of the year for some of those very reasons.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/seaworld-drops-appeal-osha-violation-25053712

"SeaWorld Entertainment has dropped an appeal of citations it received after the drowning of a trainer who was pulled under by a killer whale, ending any chance of trainers ever again swimming with orcas during shows."

How can an organization go to people's houses without being requested, steal and then kill people's pets and get away with it? That is the absolute worst thing ever.

So. Anyway. I was talking about my next trip to Florida at work last week, and the Air Force major who sits next to me told me that he hopes I don't plan to go to SeaWorld. I asked him if he really believes all of that Blackfish nonsense, and apparently he does. This man is a trained analyst and probably fairly conservative, as well. The whole thing frustrated me.

Had a similar discussion over dinner about it, but I was quick to crack jokes about how they had the gall to visit Great Adventure who also cares for marine animals.

I still find it very strange that Sea World can get so much flak for this but it's neighbor park Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has not seen a single picket fence since Blackfish was released.

I don't find it at all surprising or strange that CNN, a highly-viewed cable channel owned by a multi-billion dollar media corporation, helped along by a well-funded, well-publicized, emotionally-manipulative non-profit like PETA, as well as by thousands of websites and the eternal sophomore gossip mill that is social media, are able to saturate the minds and sway the opinions of the mostly-complacent, ill-informed and highly malleable citizens of this planet of ours.

The easy promulgation of sensational half-truths and outright lies is one of the constants of human history. One reason I generally avoid political subjects is because I find the inevitability of human credulity, and the power of social pressure, to be very depressing.

I think it is interesting how most people embed in the sense they latch on to the first bit of information they are given and then refuse and reject all other sources of information that may be contradicting.

The worst is when I hear people bitch about Seaworld and how it treats orcas and then talk about how excited they are for Christmastown or Howl O Scream at Busch Gardens. It is hard to take them seriously when they can't even realize it is the same company...

I was on my way to BGW once with friends when I mentioned I was going to Florida and Seaworld, and then one of them started screaming Blackfish, and I had to break the news to her. Suddenly, she's now more open to the topic.
