I'm surprised I305 isn't on that list to be honest. I didn't care for it, but it seems extremely popular.

I love how in the TIME article Giles states the pre-drop was a design decision for anticipation. This was standard design for B&M to relieve lift hill chain stress. While B&M no longer does this for whatever reason I do prefer their older coasters that sill have this for the reason Giles described.

Larry Giles said:
The first lift is high and after the lift we placed a section of flat track 50’ long to give the rider anticipation and appreciation of the height, as well as time to evaluate the inevitable—the drop coming. The drop was designed with a vertical curve upwards; as the coaster drops there is an outward force from the seat. While not straight down, the ride will feel near 0G on the drop, the body will sense this in the inner ear and muscular structure. This triggers your natural fight or flight response, or for the coaster rider—a thrill.

Giles is actually correct in what he says. While it is known that this feature was designed to relieve chain stress, Apollo's Chariot has a very long pre-drop section (compared to other B&Ms) designed to give riders anticipation and appreciation of height. Raging Bull, the only other B&M hyper with a pre-drop section, has a much shorter pre-drop (about half the length of Apollo's). Having ridden both I can say the drops on each feel a bit different once you go over the crest and start to drop.

Here's a comparison pic of both.

I always thought that pre-drop was to minimize how much the back car slowed the front car (if that makes any sense). Guess I was wrong.

I took these back in 2012- excuse the quality- my point and shoot and cloudy days don't mix well. That said, I love the way coasters look against a dark sky so...

Did anybody notice this year that the dispatch audio wasn't working at all. That's pretty much all the theming Apollo's Chariot has.:-/

I didn't hear it once this year. And I went to he park about 25 times, and rode AC about 20 of those times, sometimes multiple times in a row too.

Zachary I think these are all wonderful photos. I personally LOVE those overcast days for picture-taking. It makes the colors really pop! Check out some pics I put in the Griffon thread. :D
