Alpie went down to permenant 2 train status in 2015 (was lead over there that year) due to overall declining ridership the previous years. They still wouldn't run with one at the time though. Griffon and Apollo are still popular enough to really utilize 3 trains. Alpie only needed it a few days of the year and it wasn't worth the money to have a third train ready-to-run for only 3-5 days out of the season.
Where is the 3rd?

More generally I wonder why Alpie's ridership is so low compared to the other major coasters? Is it just location or a rough ride experience?

Alpie always has 2 trains available, 3rd in annual. Very rarely will all 3 be assembled but I believe the maintenance schedule is timed out in a specific way so that they have all 3 assembled for like 2 weeks of HOS as that’s the only time it really justifies needing 3 trains.
Anyways, back to Apollo’s Chariot. The third train is always in annual, but I believe they are pushing to get 3 trains available for operation.

Does anyone else love the sound of the anti rollbacks clicking at the bottom of the valleys from the negatives? Specifically after the MCBR and the final drop, and occasionally if it’s running fast, the bunny hop before the last drop. I love hearing that sound, especially on other B&M hypers.

There’s a lot of things to appreciate about Apollo most thoosies wouldn't understand, it is definitely past its prime days but I’d still take it over hypers like the Morgan hypers and even Intimidator or Candymonium. And it’s also to damn iconic, seeing that predrop and the purple track from outside the park never misses.

As somone who just got back from riding intimidator for the 1st time, I gotta harrrrrrrd disagree with that. Intimidator/thunder striker did everything better than Apollo. Waaaay less of a rattle, the trains are super lomg so you can really feel the train be pushed through the valleys in a weird way. It's longer feeling, airtime 2x stronger. But hey we like what we like

I've got to second this! B&M's are the best sounding roller coasters out there, in my book. I love the distinctive roar, the "click-click-click" as a train enters or departs a station, and I love the sound of the friction brakes. The only coaster brakes that come close to sounding this good are Arrow coasters. I'm thinking specifically of Great Adventure's Great American Scream Machine. @GASM can I get an amen? The park added trim brakes after the first loop and I love the sound those made! Also the midcourse with the little honk noise the train made as it went down the next hill, was a distinct feature of that ride that signaled to me "yes, you are at Great Adventure!".

I also agree, Apollo beats out Carowinds' Intimidator. To be fair, the only time I rode Intimidator was during a rainstorm... so I was getting pelted. Even so, Intimidator is awesome, but I find it too repetitive with all the consecutive hills when compared with Apollo. Apollo has a much more dynamic layout/ride experience from the tease of a first drop, to that amazing swooping turn by the water and the great finale of hills at the end. Plus, I agree, It's a little more iconic. Fury is the Icon at Carowinds.

That would be the electrical contacts for the harness monitor system. Modern systems dont need as many so the sound isn't as obvious (ethernet based now vs AS-i based systems from then). Each row had 4 contacts for the AS-i (pronounced "aussie") system to communicate with a node on each row where 2 proximity sensors were connected to each harness. AS-i is not the greatest system anymore (I have never installed them, only removed them), but when they work, they are usually pretty solid. Nevertheless, the "thump-thump click-click-click" of the train leaving the transfer into the station is one of my favorite sounds of that ride.

That’s a top 3 BGW sound for sure. Right up there with the classic train whistle and “clop-clop-clop hisss” sound of Nessie’s station brakes for me.

Yeah. I just love some BGW classic coaster sounds. Nessie lift (un-unified ARB), apollo lift (unified ARB that almost matched the lift music tempo), griffon floor raise/lower, [headphone warning] ALPIE LIFT!!!

Love the trim noises on Lochness 2nd drop and the station. Those and Alpies lift will always be iconic.

Though ive noticed Alpies lift is sometimes really loud or really quiet. It's very random

I rode Alpengeist this past weekend and the lift was the quietest I've ever heard it. Usually I have to yell at the person sitting next to me to get anything across but this time we could understand each other perfectly well at normal speaking volume.

I wish someone else would have commented before I gave my actual answer of the last two drops, the screams of people not expecting it is my actual favorite sound. It catches people so off guard and it’s a really fun moment to hear those who aren’t. The above was sarcasm.
