I heard that along with Anaconda's new paint job, it also got new wheels. Did you ride it Evan to see if it was any smoother? I heard it had improved a bit.

Isn't wheel replacement the most common maintenance procedure for any coaster? Why would this make any difference if they are swapped out 3 times per year anyway?

I believe just because it is common, doesn't mean they want to have to do it continuously every day. It takes up time and resources. The less you have to worry about it the better.

It has tons of potential though.
I definitely agree it has tons of potential, but not a lot of people ride it because of its awful shaking, worse than the hurler in my opinion. If the shaking was less and the lake was tended to, it would be a much better ride. A new paint color wouldn't hurt either;)

Was Anaconda's lift motor replaced? It seemed significantly zippier going up the lift, as opposed to its slow, plodding chug up the hill in previous years. I just hope Nessie gets in on something like that!

I always sort of liked Anaconda and I appreciated the ability to ride a looping coaster without waiting in such a long line.  I have not ridden it in a few years, however.  While going through old photos I found this one which I believe is from the 90s.  Did Anaconda ever have red/yellow trains and white rails?

No, anaconda has had the same trains since opening. It opened with orange rails and a black track. Then got repainted with yellow rails and a red track. So no, not Anaconda.

What he said^. Except the track was never black. Originally, before it was ever repainted, the track and supports were the same dark green color. The rails were yellow/orange.

Geo, The coaster you in the picture you posted is the Whirlwind which used to be at Knoebels. ;)

Wow, thanks, Mike541x! I cannot disagree -- it looks just like Knoebels, Whirlwind. I have never been to that park and this is a scan from an actual snapshot in my collection. I have a real mystery. I so want to ride this Arrow looper now...

On a positive note, I did find photos from the opening year of Kings Dominion including some of pre-tram safari and elevated photos of the park from the Eiffel Tower. I will scan and look for an appropriate thread to share some of these.

^ I've wondered what sort of coating steel roller coasters generally receive. If you could find out what kind of paint was applied to Anaconda, and how it was applied (spray?), I'd be very interested to read about it.

That would be a far stretched question :p
Typically they re-paint at least one coaster every year. I think every year since 2010 we've seen some form of paint on a coaster. Here's to hoping that they keep it up.
