Sorry to veer OT, but someone please enlighten me...In what way is Griffon a parking lot coaster?

Really you can take the Griffon and (with minor alterations) place it on any other flat piece of land.

With the exception of the three at Busch and a handful of others, almost every coaster meets this description. Dominator and Intimidator in Carowinds are parking lot coasters, they are literally built in the parking lot. Both are however great rides.

Griffon is NOT a parking lot coaster. The base of the supports are at many different elevations throughout the ride. There is no way you can dismantle that coaster and build it on a flat piece of land "as is."

RE: 2014 Coaster

If you want to compare griffon to a real parking lot coaster just see all the B&M's built in a Six Flags or Cedar Fair park.

RE: 2014 Coaster

I think general parkgoers comparing a Mega or MegaLite to AC or even Intimidator is inevitable.
Why not, heaven forbid, work with Intamin on one of their wooden coasters? The technology they use for their woodies like El Toro have made normal hybrids world class coasters.

Griffon is no comparison to say something like Dominator at KD. That coaster is built on a completely leveled piece of land. The base of Griffon's second drop is about 20-ft above sea level and the turnaround after the splashdown pool is about 80-ft above sea level. A 60-ft difference in elevation changes between two ends of the ride doesn't scream "parking lot" coaster.

RE: 2014 Coaster

I think what I see happening here is that people are putting the distinction in the wrong place. Rides like Griffon and Dominator* (and Rebel Yell and most coasters at most parks everywhere) are what I consider the norm for coaster placement. Rides like LNM and Alpengeist are terrain coasters, in other words, not the norm. Medusa at Discovery Kingdom and Scream at Magic Mountain are parking lot coasters, meaning the park plopped them onto the parking lot and made no effort to make it feel like the coaster was in the park at all.

*Yes, the area where Dominator sits used to be a parking lot, but the entire area has been covered in grass and pavers and turned into quite a nice little plaza.

RE: 2014 Coaster

^ This.

Busch and Kings Dominion build different types of rides because it's almost impossible to advertise something as "new" when you can already experience the same thing 1 1/2 hours up the interstate.

RE: 2014 Coaster

hear me out, slide coaster. Like a flyer but on your back moving in the direction your feet are just like on a slide at the playground. like you're on a crazy out of control slide. (essentially a reverse flyer, upside down)

Or another crazy idea, underground coaster. carry on.

hey man, no one knows anything about this so we can wildly speculate on coasters that don't exist right?

RE: 2014 Coaster

The custom flyers B&M has been cranking out lately all look absolutely awesome. I would settle for a flyer if it was a custom design and not a superman, but I would greatly dislike the low capacity that every flyer deals with.

RE: 2014 Coaster

I personally hate the B&M Flyers. The Pretzel loops suck and the layouts are boring and uninspired.

Agreed. Manta at SWO was pretty incredible. Also agree that the low capacity is a negative...but again the new designs with split loading help that out a bit (Manta).

Not all of them. And it is something different (none in Va).

I think a Flyer through the terrain changes were BBW was would be insane. Would have loved to see what they could have done.

I said something very similar on an *other* forum... to careen toward the Rhine head first would be amazing... and a 'flying' coaster also lends itself to many mythical characters & creatures... To stay with the German Grimm theme for that site, a flying, cannibalistic, forest-dwelling witch would do...

You haven't seen starry night ripper, have you? That and even Air at Alton Towers.

I've ridden Air and it bored me to tears! Nemesis made up for it though!

Maybe a flyer where Loch Ness "used" to be in a few years....two passes over the water.
