RE: 2012 Coaster

I certainly wouldn't expect anything before mach tower opens. But I think we will see some announcement after illuminights is over.

zoomy, how far to the right are they really? According to your initial schedule it looked like track will be here around hos time. So I imagine they need to get the slab ready for indoor track install by then.

None of us really know for sure. Honestly though, is the name really important when we have a maker, a name, a layout, and a theme?

Yeah Swift, I think a name is important. It just seems to give this ride with a maker, a name, a layout, and a theme ... some sort of identity, i guess...

RE: 2012 Coaster

For those of you concerned about how much they are clearing, here is the minutes from a recent James City County Chesapeake Bay Board meeting. BGW has to, and has gotten, their approval for the project due to the fact that the site is within the Chesapeake Bay Resource Protection Area. To get that approval, BGW has to address runoff from the area which involves replanting grass and reforesting a large part of the site. It also mentions that BBW's old footprint and footers will be used to the furthest extent possible. The numbers are as follows:

9,040 sf of encroachment in to the RPA
3,725 sf is permanent vegetation clearing for the ride
2,111 sf is temporary construction to remain as grass pavers for future maintenance access
832 sf of new impervious cover
3,204 sf is current RPA from the BBW
1,458 sf reduction and restoration of RPA area previously impacted from the BBW
18,191 sf revegetation of previously impacted RPA from the BBW to offset future mitigation requirements
Busch Gardens is proposing to restore 21,916 sf of RPA with woody vegetation

Defintions:

impervious cover- is the amount of land cover in roads, buildings and parking lots, and turf grass cover in a watershed and can seriously impact biotic integrity in associated streams --taken from
http://www.epa.gov/athens/research/impervious/

woody vegetation- trees, bushes, and such

RE: 2012 Coaster

If you notice in the report, they have cleared out 44% of the land and they only have 4% more to clear. So to me that means that they are almost done with the land clearing at least. Probably only a little more near the final turn into the station. Also, does anyone know if it possible to find out when Busch reps. are going to be at another one of these hearings? I would like to attend, I am quite interested in this stuff.

That's only inside the RPA, part of the site is outside of it too (about 15%). I'll try and have a map of it soon.

RE: 2012 Coaster

^ Oh I see. What else do they have to clear out then? It seems like its just the path from the river to the station which isn't THAT much land. Definitely try to map it out if you can, I would be interested in that too.

RE: 2012 Coaster

Glad to hear the forest will be replanted. It looks totally destroyed now, but I have not been able to see it in person.

Well I would kinda hope that they would, being that they have held the "Most Beautiful Park in the Country" award the past 21 years. Would be odd if they left it empty.

RE: 2012 Coaster

It's not easy to build a steel coaster between trees. If you look at BBW promos from 27 years ago, you'll see that there was very sparse tree covering. Give it a few years and it will be back.

The trees and foliage around Apollo's Chariot have grown nicely in just a little over a decade.

For those who waiting for the map, It may be a week or two before I get it up. I'm having to take care of some personal things right now, and can't really work on it 'til they are dealt with.

--CarterGee, Actually I have been a member since '09, just waiting for the board to "mature abit"* before I say something.

* As in letting the dust settle, not as in maturity. Although...

RE: 2012 Coaster

Went to the park yesterday and finally got a chance to walk over and check out the construction. The pictures don't do it justice, that is a BIG hole!

RE: 2012 Coaster

I was there this evening and took these pics. Something is missing, was there a tree there?

RE: 2012 Coaster

That's a shocking difference. You could hardly see the station from that point of view just a week and a half ago. How's the crater looking?
