My understanding is the lift motor went kaboom, hence the supports being in such bad shape. Happened while pulling a train up, otherwise the train would not have stopped there.
That’s possible. I just know those boards were already in bad shape and some were even rotten (too many days of standing in that line with a 3 year old). I was shocked they didn’t replace them back in the offseason. I thought maybe one fell and damaged the chain as the train was going up the lift. Anyhow, whatever it was caused a lot of damage. Thanks for explaining.
In good news here, wood is available from a local lumber yard and won't require a 2+ year wait.
Several people (one which was a former KD mechanic that worked on that ride) said it was probably caused from a problem with the chain idler. One person gave the following explanation of what probably happened…
“It appears to be multiple failures caused by the upper idler. When the train engages the lift, a sudden shock is sent through the lift hill, originating at the upper idler pulley/gear. This impact load is typically spread across multiple bents and doesn't do any damage. Over time, the structure loosens up and some bents take more force than others. Eventually, some structural members take most of the force and end up breaking.
If you look at the photo, not only is the bent post sheared, if you follow the horizontal beam that caused the break, you will see a collapsed beam on the chain return trough, which no doubt pushed all of the impact load to the left bent post that eventually failed.”
At this point, their commitment to not painting the crests of their wooden coasters is commendable

Ok, hadn't thought about this until now. So, Kings Dominion is now part of Six Flags. Six Flags has the licensing to use Warner Bros characters. Warner Bros owns... Scooby Doo. I've now officially decided what I want for Kings Dominion's 50th.
... And you're going to tell us all what it is that you want, because I can't figure out what you were leading on...

In all seriousness I've seen this brought up a few times since the merger, especially because I believe Warner Brothers also owns most of Hanna-Barbera! I think the answer I've seen though is that licensing for all the characters under that umbrella is not as cut and dry as it may seem, so it still may seem like a pipe-dream to see representation in these parks.
I do think, however, rather than ride names/themed areas, the most realistic new IP implementation could be special events with Six Flags IPs. KD absolutely could have a Kidzfest like Canada's Wonderland does and have special Looney Tunes and/or DC superheroes meet and greets, small show, new merchandise etc. Heck, throw it as a weekends-only special event in the spring and KD fills in an early-season void of special events (similar to Busch Garden's kids weekends) and it could be an easy cash grab, but bring people out to the park for something unique. If the likes of Scooby Doo and/or other Hanna-Barbera characters could be included in that, especially given the history with the park, that could be icing on the cake!
From a KD Fanatics post…new trains are coming. They are being built in-house and the ride is expected to reopen within 2-3 weeks. For whatever it may be worth, I will certainly miss the buzz bars, but maybe these trains will be a tad more gracious with the leg room?
