It certainly becomes challenging not to feel resentful when you visit Carowinds as somebody who frequents Kings Dominion when you notice there may be material variances in their budget from Kings Dominion that are apparent like that for example. One brutal example of this I saw was when I went to SWO for the first time 2 months after I went to SWSA for the first time. "Wow they...........clearly have a much larger landscaping budget than San Antonio......alright then."

For example next year for the 50th I haven't seen any mention of a drone show for KD? I thought WOF and Carowinds announced their drone shows when they announced their 50th? Could also be corporate being like "um we just spent $25M on you, go away for a year or something?"
In all fairness on the drone show the corporate budget and landscape changed quite a bit with the merger and the new combined company is now trying to fix years of neglect on several of the legacy SF parks their is no telling what cut back that might have caused.

KD also announced that they are debuting a new nighttime spectacular next year for the 50th. I don’t see how the lack of drones leads to the conclusion that the new spectacular was budget-cut.

Keep in mind that KD is getting a major coaster AND celebrating it's 50th anniversary in 2025. Neither KI nor Carowinds received a major attraction on their 50th anniversary celebrations. Something to keep in mind.

That’s generally what it looks like to me. It’s also possible they could announce it later on. Rapterra is a ~$25m attraction, I will acknowledge that is a significant cash outflow. My point is the trend after seeing them at Kings Island, Worlds of Fun, and Carowinds for their 50th anniversaries, it’s still relatively disappointing if KD is omitted from the drone show train and that trend breaks KD specifically as the track record created the expectation which would then be “unmet.”

Also WOF did open Zambezi Zinger for their 50th and Winterfest is……something I have limited opinion about and should probably continue the drone debate in the 50th thread…..

Was the drone show an independent contractor or did Legacy CF buy them and do it themselves?

If they bought them and did it in house, there's no excuse IMO to not send them to KD for a year and program them with the same team. However if it was an independent contractor I somewhat understand it not being something they do.

^that detail has been one I’ve been curious about but unless somebody here has insider info on that we don’t have a way to verify the method the drone shows were procured.

Hard to find much information, but in the case of Kings Islands' 50th show, it looks like it was contracted out to Rozzi Fireworks who owned the drones.
If this is the case I'm a little more amendable to understanding. KI, WOF, Caro all have some things in common that KD doesn't: Closer to (or in) a major metro center with major league teams. That matters to me because there's reasons for companies that do that stuff to exist and be needed by places like that.

I couldn't really find a local company to RVA that could do it. And you could go to DC-Balt area but there's enough festivals, teams, and other events up here to support that without a company needing to go to Doswell.

Does Dollywood own their drone show? They “seem” more likely to have actually bought and set up their drones themselves. They are a bit far out from major metro areas. Completely different company.

Probably need to start a “drone shows” thread as a general Industry topic. Winterfest certainly seems like a great opportunity for the technology itself.

Do we know who Walmart contracted when they did the drone show over KD during Covid? (2020) I assume somewhat local. I know there was a drone show at Old Dominion by Sky elements who are the same company that did a drone show at IAAPA this year. Their website says they service all 50 states.

EDIT: Looks like Kings Island used Verge Aero, who are based out of Texas just like Sky Elements.

There have been several shows in the RVA area over the last few years so someone is willing to do the general area even if it's a traveling contractor.

Walmart used a regional group that did it for several different shows up and down the east coast.

Carowinds, Canada's Wonderland and Knott's Merry Farm all have a new Tree Lighting Ceremony this year. Presumably Kings Dominion will be using the new show as well.

Interestingly, Six Flags Over Texas is using the previous WinterFest Tree Lighting Ceremony along with Holly Jolly Trolley and the MistleTones at their Holiday in the Park. As far as I know that is the first integration of legacy Cedar Fair live entertainment into a legacy Six Flags park since the merger.

Grizzly and/or Racer 75 would be great additions to this event. Those rides, paired with a new show in the Kings Dominion Theater, would go a long way in making Winterfest interesting again.

FOF/Cheer would be SO cool to have open as well, but that seems like a lot of effort to get that entire walk-back presentable/cohesive for Winterfest. Christmas at Professor Whey's camp would be awesome.

I remember hearing that the intensive maintenance process that the park’s wooden coasters undergo makes it impractical to open them for Winterfest. Unlike the steel coasters, the wooden coasters’ train bodies are fully deconstructed and rebuilt each off-season — not to mention any repairs made to the wooden track and structure. With the off-season shortened by winter operation, it would be almost impossible to get the rides ready for opening day.

I believe this is the exact reason Racer 75 was only open for Winterfest’s first year in 2018 before being replaced with Twisted Timbers. And notice that Woodstock Express is the only ride in the open part of Planet Snoopy that doesn’t run during Winterfest.

Racer 75 has 4 trains and often operates with only 2. If they wanted to have additional coasters, they could operate this coaster during Winterfest with 2 trains and rebuild the remaining two trains in the early spring season.

But ultimately, all of this comes down to they don’t want to hire enough staff to do the rebuilds quickly. Dollywood operates all of their coasters, 10 months out of the year.

I almost never seeride lines of any significant length during Winterfest so I have to think that maybe it's not that they don't want to hire the staff it's that there just isn't the demand to justify highering the staff. Given the lines I see for shows, and restaurants if the choice comes down to it I would much rather they invest in more staff for those then another coaster.

Also a spring rebuild train doesn't address the considerable amount of of season wood work that gets done on the track it's self. Plus The trains actually get shipped of to Philadelphia Toboggan for the work so there is no guarantee that a spring rebuild fits into their availability.

kings dominion almost exclusively hires seasonal employees which means all employees have to take 13 weeks off annually. If you want to lose the least hours possible you take that during winterfest. KD is actively hiring in all departments so it's not just a matter of hiring more people, the vast majority of people that want to work at KD cannot rn.

This is also a major cost savings for the corporate office. That keeps you under the hours threshold that they have to give you benefits at, and if you voluntarily don’t work it saves them on the costs or rehire the next year. I’ve worked at a few golf courses where we did that.
