RE: This is Oktoberfest (1976 to 2011, 2013 to Present)

Man, this is the night for brain fart recovery. I meant to ask this last weekend:
I don't know if it has been mentioned, but there seems to be at least two variations of TIO. Has anyone else noticed this? Both variations that I know for sure are good, but only one of them has my favorite song. I don't know what it is called, but you get to go "La la la la, la la la la! La la la la la...la la la la la!", etc.

If there was ever ANY doubt that TIO is a popular show, check these out:

This was the audience tonight for the 7:30 show. Almost the entire hall was full. Still some seats available on the backside. I don't want to hear anything about it being dinner time. That other thing that shares the stage has its entire run during prime time lunch-eating hours (12-4). This was just so amazing to behold. Lots of people eating, singing, swaying, dancing. etc. etc. with BIG smiles on their faces. It's just not the same with that other show; no matter how many people are in the hall. Leave this alone BGW!! Why mess with a good thing?

In the second picture I saw that the benches were back. Did they bring them back? I went just a couple days before this was posted, and they did that other dance with the flower thingies and the streamers, I'm not saying I didn't like the dance with the flower thingies and streamers, but I like the one with the benches better.

TIO was off Monday. Tuesday was BAD weather. TIO at lunch was only full in the front and only for a few tables in the center. The Tuesday applause for 5-ish tables was louder than a nearly full lunch hall at Entwined on Monday. They did not do the "La la la" tune. They did do the tune with benches, not the streamer one. Go show your support for this show!

Sad, I have only seen one version of TIO. :(

RE: This is Oktoberfest (1976 to 2011, 2013 to Present)

The dance they do with the benches is a traditional Bavarian Schuhplattler dance. It's name (Der Bankerltanz), in old German literally translates into "the bench dance".
The other dance with the arches, is a traditional wedding dance (Hochzeit Tanz). Almost all of the dances in the show is some form of a Schuhplattler. The Schuhplattler was supposedly inspired by the mating ritual of a particular bird. That is where you get the knees slapping and leg movement from.
Notice that most of the dances are either showing the strength of the women (when the women hold the men up with their strength), or it's the men showing off for the women. The only problem I have with the show, is how the women all talk and shriek in a very high-pitched voice. Most Germans would find that insulting. Although, I know that is only a small director error.

Edit:The things they do, where the women go "WeeOOO", and the guys respond "HehUp!", is something that the Germans have adopted from the American Oktoberfest celebrations called "Getrunkner Schriller" (drunken shriek). This is not meant as a jab at Americans, it is actually to help them keep the dancing time-signature.

Oh so there's 2 versions! I like the one with the Benches better than the one with the streamers.
I hope this show comes back next year! Even if Entwined still shares the stage with it during lunch, I just hope it comes back.

It's not two versions, there are a variety of activities that the performers can do during the duration of the shows for the guests to see keeping the experience fresh. What's even better is the performers get to pick what they do every day for the shows instead of having a fixed schedule, so you never really know what you're going to see when you watch.

And that is exactly why the show has lasted so long. It's different every time. In my opinion it's the only show in the park that doesn't really have an "expiration date". The whole idea of the area is that every day is Oktoberfest, and this show is what ties that altogether. I know they can't do this with the current set up, but I remember when they would even use the balcony at the beginning of the show. Hopefully, over the years, the band will grow, and maybe they'll even be able to carry the banners as they march in. I also miss the alpenhorns. That was one of my favorite parts of the show. My hope, is that corporate ordered Scott Gasparich to leave the show there. However, if the rumors about him moving to Florida come true, we may not have to worry.

RE: This is Oktoberfest (1976 to 2011, 2013 to Present)

SG was actually forced to bring back TIO in some fashion. I also miss the alphorns. Funny story is SG took them out the year he got here. Then 1st year Rhinefeld Band took it upon themselves to incorporate the alphorns into their show. When it came time to do rainshows inside the festhaus for Rhinefeld Band they tried to do their normal show with the alphorns. As soon as SG heard about this he immediately called over to Festhaus and said no one is ever allowed to play an alphorn in the Festhaus even though it was a part of their show. Have no idea what his deal is with alphorns. Now he has finally incorporated them into his new shows as jokes. They even destroyed them to the point that you can't play them properly. There used to be a third somewhere that was much longer than the two as a bass. They were authentic and the guy that made them passed away unfortunately. I also wonder, like someone else on this forum, how long Entwined and TIO can run together.

I'm not sure if that's right about the "WeeOOO". We used to have 2 sisters who immigrated from Holland during WWII as neighbors (each had a separate apartment). They actually did that vocal EVERY time they would see each other, and when they would walk away from each other. It was kindof like us saying "Hi there!", and "See ya later!". And it was more of a high (not screeching) "WOOoo!". I haven't been to BGW in a few years now, but I remember the girls USED to do it the same way as these sisters. We loved listening to them, and it was even better to hear them talk their native tongue (I think it was Dutch, but my wife thinks it was German...). I know I have video of the Festhaus show from like 5 years ago that has the girls doing it this way. I actually have a fair amount of videos of the Festhaus show from a variety of years. And yes, we noticed in those years that there were 2-3 different shows, with different songs and dancing in each. We were able to catch all of them on video.

We really enjoyed the first 10 minutes we got to watch TIO. We were going to stay, but the acoustics in that room is just TOO much for my son, and we had to leave.

RE: This is Oktoberfest (1976 to 2011, 2013 to Present)

We were going to watch it Saturday night, but we had ridden Pompeii, went into the splash area, and rode Roman Rapids, so we were cold. Of course after we got off Roman Rapids (I was the one that got soaked by the waterfalls :)) clouds becan to roll in. Thank goodness it didn't rain, but it made us COLD! So we didn't want to sit in the VERY well air conditioned Festhaus.
We were trying to see the Illuminights shows for one last time so we told ourselves, "This is Oktoberfest won't be going anywhere, the Illuminights shows will be gone tomorrow." In my head I was thinking, "I HOPE TIO isn't going anywhere!" :p

RE: This is Oktoberfest (1976 to 2011, 2013 to Present)

So I went to the 7:30 showing of TIO to eat dessert. For a very dead night at the park, it was pretty crowded for the show. I mean the front was about 3/4ths full with a couple tables with people sitting at them in the back. Let me tell you, this was probably the best or one of the best showings of TIO I have ever seen in my life. The whole crowd participated, the kids loved it and couldn't stop dancing. The cast was so active, and practically sang their lungs out, and had a lot of fun. You just had to be there, it was amazing! I'm serious I've probably never seen a better showing of TIO! This show will ALWAYS be 10 times better then Entwined will ever be. Period End of sentence.

Not to take anything away from above statement, but it should be mentioned that it was raining outside. Too bad I missed the show. Were they singing the lalalalalalala version?

Well not at the time of the showing it cleared up, and yes they sang the lalalala version, it was awesome!

RE: This is Oktoberfest (1976 to 2011, 2013 to Present)

Hopefully there's nothing to worry about, but at yesterday's showing there was only 3 pairs. However, there was a 4th boy who would switch with the other guys every other dance. I know that it was probably because the 4th girl was either late or sick, but I just thought I should mention that. There is probably nothing to worry about though.

Pulled from the Entwined thread...

Entwined is here to stay for a while.

I know this isn't for this thread. But what about TIO?

It's hard to say. From what I understand though, when Scott is allowed to remove it, he'll likely do so. Everything I've heard indicates that someone else is requiring that it stay there.
