Also it is useful to note that the water used to run to the main body under the rail-road bridge and across the area that contains Nessie's lift hill motor. (I believe the water still empties into the Rhine but through an underground run off system.)

Probably due to their roots, the Busch family seemed to put a much greater value on the German areas which I suspect is why they chose the name they did.

To piggyback, the Rhein just makes more sense from a thematic immersion standpoint. 1. AB are a company of German heritage and it made sense to have the body of water named the Rhein when the park opened. 2. The real Rhein is a major artery flowing through the middle of Europe with a lot of hustle and bustle, including beer manufacturing and transport. 3. Loch Ness is a boring lake where a fictional dinosaur supposedly lives. Naming or renaming it to something like Loch Ness would be kind of a head scratcher.

Your first two points plus what Zimmy said are probably the most likely scenarios. In today's context, your third point also makes a lot of sense.

However, in the context of the first few years, wouldn't LNM have been the only major ride to have been planned to interact with the waterway?

Naming it Loch Ness instead of the Rhine would have also provided a marketing tie-in and also have made sense assuming Nessie was in the drawing boards around the same time as the park opened (give or take a year, though I'd imagine the idea was there if not the actual planning and engineering) assuming that at the time they didn't foresee any other rides, except maybe the boats, with a waterway interaction or any removal or major alterations (thankfully neither have happened) to the coaster.

And, if after a while the whole Loch Ness naming thing stopped making a whole lot of sense, they could probably have renamed it to something else - say perhaps changing to the Rhine in time for BBW's opening.

Anyways, obviously that's not what happened unless anyone would care to prove otherwise - just something I had been wondering about.

Thanks!

The Rhine River cruise boats opened with the park in 1975, predating Loch Ness Monster by a few years. Popular then, popular now...

They could have named that attraction the Loch Ness cruise, I suppose, in an alternate timeline. Though they surely planned the location of the Germany hamlets before nailing down Loch Ness Monster's precise location and theming -- making it weird to name a boat ride at the bottom of the Germany hill (and its lake) after a Scottish body of water for reasons not yet actually in hand.

Also, it would have been particularly odd to have a Loch Ness cruise during which one did NOT have any opportunity to spot the Monster. That's a bit too close to the real thing.

I object. I talk to Sasquatch regularly (we camp in the same places) and while we often disagree, we both find the idea of Nessie's existence preposterous.

Sasquatch is a warm and affectionate creature. At this point, Robin’s more like the Yeti, cold and aloof.

Good thing you don’t go to the Yeti

*The big story is Nessie!

*Marketing tied with Coliseum Mall for the opening.

*30K, July 29, a record breaking day!

Sorry for posting a bunch of ol Daily Press stuff today. I love old history
