When Great Adventure opened in July 1974, one of the original attractions was the Great Train Ride. This was a 24" gauge live steam train built by Crown Locomotives for the park. The park ordered four locomotives and car sets, with two delivered in the first season and the other two arriving for 1975. The train was supposed to become part of a transportation system, but unfortunately that never happened.
There are few photos of the Great Train Ride since it ran through the woods on the edge of the park, mostly out of site of guests. For 1975, the park's second flume ride was added over and around it.
The Great Train Ride was removed at the end of the 1980 season to make way for Roaring Rapids arrival in 1981.
