Great interview! I really liked the book analogy with it being slammed shut and thrown off the bed when perhaps it would have been better to close and place it down gently.

The park's skyline did become depressing. Enthusiasm seemed deflated. That's not to say the park was unenjoyable, but the 2025 season certainly had its hiccups.

It's very encouraging that Ryan mentioned live entertainment, which was severely lacking for a lot of the season. Up until August, there was one midway show - the performers were good and energetic, but having a single 15-20 minute segment as the pretty much the sole entertainment prior to August was less than ideal. Losing the Brad Ross Magic residency to Knott's is still something I gripe about to anyone who will listen. After that, Heroes And Villains Fest was such a breath of fresh air. Not only was it damn good, but it brought some big time entertainment that the park sorely needed. I remember talk during the ACE event about how surprisingly positive the reception to that was. Good! Guests were starving for shows and I'm glad they made it known.

Speaking of starving, it was demoralizing that the boardwalk eateries were almost always (or, in the case of Kickin Chicken, actually always) closed. With KC being the closest eatery to the new ride site, I'll cut them a little slack and hope some ideas were being tossed around for its future.

2025 is also the first time I can ever remember saying "I'm not having fun" while inside the gates of Great Adventure. This phrase was uttered on two separate occasions: once during the opening day drink refill debacle, and again on a very crowded day when Flash was held up by an individual who brought their phone on the ride (despite the FREE lockers). This person was permitted to use the exit ramp, get a locker ticket, store the phone, and then get back onto the train while the dispatch was paused and those in line looked helplessly on.

The other 90+% of my visits were plenty enjoyable, though, so that's not a bad ratio. There were desolate spaces in which purged rides once operated, but there were some beautification efforts too (the Rolling Thunder track piece refurb, and of course, The Shed perhaps being chief among them). The park is still nice to visit overall.

I firmly believe this past year was the bottoming out of modern Great Adventure. The options for upward trajectory are numerous. For the most part, there's a very clean slate they can work with here.

Executive chef Jeremy did an excellent job in his first year. I'm a simple person who can live off of chicken tenders without complaint, but the added menu choices (higher quality meats, hand breaded chicken, and more expansive side selections) were very much welcome. A coconut shrimp dish at the revamped Caribbean Grill location was particularly delicious and quickly became my go-to.

The one-two punch of a mammoth coaster addition and a fully retracked El Toro the season after next should be the start of a nice resurgence for this park.

Ryan talked a lot about theming for the new roller coaster and the area surrounding it... but I wish they would also focus on improving the theming of the EXISTING rides. It would be great to see Batman get it's effects back, Dark Knight needs a lot of fixes as many of the effects don't work anymore and same for Justice League, I thought they were going to add something to the queue house for Flash but nothing ever happened there (plus the onboard audio is sporadic), and Skull Mountain also needs a major refresh. If they plan to keep any of these rides, they should focus on refurbishments in the off years. I am hoping they focus on some of these things for 2026 since the new roller coaster was delayed to 2027, and nothing else has been announced for this year (yet).

There’s a part of me that actually appreciates that they haven’t done anything in terms of updates/refurbishment with the theming of the DC rides while they’re seemingly debating the value of the IP in their parks (borderline zero, imo). Putting money into theming they may no longer be able to use soon would be a waste. If they do decide to stick with it, you’re absolutely right though.

No excuse for Skull Mountain, though. I’d be perfectly fine with them leaning into this goofy rave thing they’ve got going on with it if they went all in AND would keep the damn door by the brake run closed, but as it is, it’s just a family coaster that has ridiculous wait times seemingly because people don’t know what’s in that building.

Nice to see this on tap again for 2026. The revelations from any behind-the-scenes and/or Q&A sessions (should they choose to offer such things again) could be quite substantial by late August!

Lots of positive stuff there. The Boardwalk project will rightly get most of the discussion spotlight, but those Dark Knight Theme upgrades are extremely necessary and welcome, and Best of the West being renamed bodes well for the location. That place being open was hit or miss last year, but between the rename, a functioning log flume, and Safari trucks once again dispatching from inside the park, there are good reasons to think it'll see more traffic this season. It's a spacious and scenic location, so I'm glad to see it getting some attention.

I'm not sure how much I like a stage being attached to the fountain, but if that's what it takes to get us more shows, so be it. They briefly used a stage at the back end of the fountain for The Awakening during Fright Fest, and with all the picnic style seating around there, the idea was workable. The porch area of Main Street Pub also overlooks that spot (perhaps the renovation takes that into account?).

Finally had a chance to look at the post, and they really aren’t messing around when it comes to this park (never thought they were, legacy SF certainly was though).

Absolutely phenomenal news that they’re dedicated to keeping Saw Mill Log Flume around after the long refurb and last year’s shitshow. Toro’s renovation is huge, and I have no doubt it’ll climb back up in my rankings once it’s done. Dark Knight also really, REALLY needed a refresh.

Restaurant upgrades are always welcome, and a slew of new shows is far beyond overdue. New stages are definitely needed as well being that there were so few left. WiFi upgrade is nice, but personally that’s something I’ve consistently forgotten parks even offer (except Cedar Point, kinda need it there).

Very much looking forward to what they have in store for the Boardwalk, though that goes without saying. This has only made my belief in SFEC’s dedication to the park stronger, easily the most love it’s seen in a very long time.

Unironically, I think I'm most excited for the smoker coming to the re-themed Best of the West.

Hear me out. As Northern Detective has been saying, the new 2027 coaster has certain qualities which make it feel like a Hail Mary investment into the park, which they can justify if they need to pivot away from it in the next 5-10 years. It's big and flashy, and it will most likely bring more people to the park, so it makes sense as an investment, even in the short term.

Obviously a new smoker is not anywhere near the investment level of a 300-400+ foot roller coaster, but the fact that they're putting money into a restaurant in the somewhat empty back corner of the park says to me that they are legitimately invested in the long term quality of the property. Saddle & Smoke BBQ is not going to bring people in off the highway or down from NYC, but they're spending money on it anyways. Plans often change on a dime (looking at you 2008 recession and the canceled 3rd and 4th coasters to follow El Toro/Ka), so I don't think this means we're 100% a lock if attendance doesn't trend upward, but I'm way less doom and gloom than I was a month or two ago.

Just curious, were the plans for the 3rd and 4th coasters to follow Ka ever leaked?

Oh I'm Gonna Have A Field Day With Even The Concept Of That Having Been A Concept

I appreciate the non-slanderous reference to me. I like to think of myself as a separate town that is located north of another town named Detective. Lmk if you ever put yourself through the task of skiing Creek, I offer extensive lift conversation

Really excited to see the new best of the west (no I don't think I'll ever be able to call it anything other than that). My only concern is how much AI was in that presentation. Those AI logos don't look good at all, especially the Saddle and Smoke one. I know a lot of people don't care, but to me having an actual artist make these logos is such a simple thing could really help take away from the very corporate feel that legacy Six Flags parks have had.

I think they mentioned in the video that the PR guy had just generated some of those AI logos himself as placeholders, so he’d have something to show in the presentation, with the real logos coming later.

I wasn’t paying super close attention so I’m not sure if that was in reference to all the logos or just the ones in that particular section of the presentation where it was mentioned, though.

It definitely seemed like they were making it a tongue-in-cheek bit about AI, and went as far as saying that those weren't the actual logos

A quick-and-dirty map to show the various plots for re-development. They are basically talking about the future in this way. They've identified the area where Green Lantern, the parachute tower, Twister, and some or all of the walking area in front of it as the focus of investment in the near-term. The rest is probably down the line, pending how the initial investment pans out. There's so much potential. But I think best-case we're looking at a 5-10 year plan here if they tackle every plot.

Thank you for the map. It really puts into perspective this map shown at EastCoaster (both pics by via Coliwood), though no distinction was made between the land that we know is gonna be the entrance for the new coaster and the land that would be used for the 2026 Boardwalk project, so I assume the circle is approximate and the "improvements" labeled are part of a drawing set including both 2026 and 2027 plans. I still think that leaves quite a bit of land for whatever is coming in 2026. I wonder how soon we'll see the GL lift hill return to parking

That was my goal in making the map -- to put the project area SF highlighted at the presentation into context. Obviously the new coaster is a part of that project area's additions. Yet, it's only a small portion of it, and, it's only one puzzle piece in a massive 1/4 of the park that they could redevelop to make the park better. I don't think they'll be putting in any additional rides with large footprints in the current project area, so a big addition is probably not what should be expected. But a flat (or two), maybe the drop tower, some new concessions, and more landscaping to replace all the acreage of asphalt? I think that's doable over the next year or so. And it'd be an improvement; whether it ultimately helps the park is TBD. ✌️

I am hoping for all of the above and a retheme of superman! Aqua blue track, seaside theme!
