From the Fright Fest 2025 press release, it appears that:

- The show lineup will be returning in full sans Dead Man's Party

- All the same mazes as last year, but with one missing (Stranger Things)

- Plaza De La Muerte (Toro area) replaces Exile Canyon (Log Flume/Mine Train area) as a scare zone

I hate losing the long running and tradition filled Dead Man's Party - but I'm relieved to see the rest of the shows remain (especially Unleashed, which I raved about constantly in this very thread).

I loved doing the mazes last year despite them perhaps leaning more towards the rudimentary side (it seems I may have been a bit more lenient in my reviews than others). However, with no thematic changes, few if any updates to the building interiors (presumably), and no automatic maze inclusion with the prestige pass like there was last year, the haunted attraction add-on kind of feels like a ripoff this time around. I may get a one day maze ticket to financially reward the park for keeping most of our other entertainment options intact but I don't think I'll be buying the full on pass.

This one seems like such a bizarre decision to me. DMP was always very popular, and (at least in recent years) wasn’t in an area where it caused any congestion through major walkways. With Flash being the new attraction for the year and it being hosted in front of Batman Stunt Arena, it likely would’ve gained even more traction.

I’m looking at the listed scare zones right now and I’m confused why they don’t have one at all in the right side of the park. It’s the most crowded part of the park right now since the ride removals took place and not having one where Demon District used to be (either in the Pine Barrens or Movie Town) seems to be a really odd choice. Probably cost cutting measures and or downsize from Extreme last year, but it seems weird considering that’s where most of the attractions are now.

They could be trying to get more foot traffic to the left side of the park since it is pretty dead most days.

I was a little surprised to see some props in the Western area of the park last weekend given that Exile Canyon wasn't previously listed as a Scare Zone, but the website has been updated and has it now. Makes sense with wanting to improve foot traffic in that area, and as much as I absolutely loved Demon District, it was a lot of scare actor talent being dedicated to a corner area.

I think they did a nice job with The Awakening's description given that there's no Dead Man's Party this year:

The Awakening

As the crisp air turns bitter and the decaying leaves fall like warnings across Six Flags Great Adventure, something stirs beneath the soil. Mutants twisted beyond recognition, monsters born of nightmare, and the undead, starved for flesh awaken from their cursed slumber. The annual horror has returned—but it’s no longer a celebration. It’s a reckoning.

I do wonder, though, if no DMP also means no Doctor Fright.

Nice! These look like original mazes that will replace IPs:

Total Darkness replaces Saw

Wreck-Cage
replaces Stranger Things

I'd still like to see the old Wicked Woods location behind the Log Flume get used at some point, but it's definitely nice to have all of the buildings being utilized again (especially the Showcase Theater with the return of Unleashed!).

It's also cool that Great Adventure will have an interactive lantern this year. The QR code on the map is just a placeholder for the time being, but I'm looking forward to seeing whether the effects can be as elaborate as some of the ones we've seen out of Fiesta Texas.

As mentioned in the video above, a full PDF of the Fright Fest map is now available:

I went to opening night of Fright Fest yesterday, and unlike last year, every maze was open and ready to go. All of them were well staffed and the scare actors were very good. None of the mazes really had any lines so I decided it would be a good night to spring for haunted attraction access.

I don't think it's fair to judge everything from a single (let alone opening) night, but I'll share a few initial thoughts...

Unleashed is still a very good show, but it had a lot more of a wow factor last year.

Merchandise has more variety and isn't limited to the usual Fright Fest clowns (thank goodness). All Stranger Things merchandise from FF 2024 is being sold at a 60% discount.

The lights on the Giant Wheel have been programmed to synchronize to the Halloween themed music being played on the midways. Extremely cool!

The new scare zone, Plaza Del Muerte, is fantastically colorful and appreciated. I like the addition.

Mazes:
- Asylum is mostly the same as last year (not a bad thing at all) with a few new elements, one of which was very surprising and caught me completely off guard! May very well be the best of the bunch.
- Wreck-Cage was a decent enough maze with a bit of a storyline (patrons have been recruited to work in a scrapyard). Good actors but the setup didn't feel overly elaborate. May well have been thrown together quickly just to make use of the building. Hard rock/metal soundtrack from Demon District last year was in use here, which had a positive impact on the experience.
- Witch's Reflection: The tried and true mirror maze. Actors had better placement than last year and overall I enjoyed it quite a bit more.
- Big Top Terror: Excellent. Great 3D effects with pops of color and surprises around every corner. Scare actors were particularly strong in this one; one of them in the role of a magician improv'd a story perfectly to hold our group up because we were getting close to the people in front of us. Very pleased with this maze.
- Army Of The Dead: Mostly the same as last year with a couple of elements removed in favor of scare actor performances. Not going to knock it for that, but I did think the set pieces they removed were impressive.
- The Conjuring: Still a very solid maze with the best jump scare in the park. Final room had better lighting for some reason, which unfortunately ruined an actor's hiding spot.
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Better setup at the beginning of this maze, mostly the same after. Great, gruesome props and all actors, even those intentionally in plain sight, were fittingly frightful.
- Trick 'r Treat: Enjoyable walkthrough with cool settings and well placed actors. Final room was changed for the better.
- Total Darkness: Are you familiar with the phrase "Save the best for last"? Well, I didn't do that. Woof. This one is immensely uninspiring. Take the Saw maze, rip absolutely everything out, turn out the lights, and call it a day. The actors did a good job considering with what they had, and what they had was nothing. Absolutely brutal. Aside from the honest and valiant efforts of the actors, the most redeeming part of this maze is that it exits next to the vastly superior Asylum.

All in all, it was a pretty well managed opening night with good props throughout the park and just the right amount of fog. Flash's lighting package looked spectacular in the nighttime hours. Nitro's downtime will be palpable when crowd sizes increase, especially with Wonder Woman (inoperable) and Jersey Devil (awful capacity following the change in how trains progress through the station) in the vicinity.

*Circus themed music was being played on loop in some parts of the Metropolis area, so this was probably intended to be a scare zone at some point during the planning phase. It's interesting that they didn't change the music once this presumed plan fell through.

I was fortunate enough to enjoy a tremendous visit last Saturday on the final evening of Scares For Cares.

For those unfamiliar, Scares For Cares is an annual event where people can volunteer as scare actors at Great Adventure to raise money for charity (the money that would be given to them as salary is instead donated). In 2025 there were 3 such nights: 9/13, 9/20, and 9/27. They're a great way for performers to get involved without having to commit to a full time gig, and from what I've heard, veteran scare actors from prior seasons often return to take part as well. This year's charity was POAC Autism Services!

Between the charity event and the natural progression of Fright Fest itself, scares were much more abundant than they were on my last visit. Despite my stance to avoid doing so, I did purchase another Haunted Attractions pass (at $35 a pop on each of my visits, I'm still five dollars to the good in comparison to the cost of a season long pass). This time, it was worth every penny. Each maze was packed to the gills with actors - two jump scares would often occur within 5 seconds of each other, with no sacrifices in actor quantity later on. Even Total Darkness, the maze that I justifiably ripped in my last post, was enjoyable, with legit surprises and some smartly placed actors seamlessly ensuring that guests follow the correct path. It was/is almost certainly the best this maze will ever be.

Scare Zone quality was also taken up a notch with the additional actors. After a bit of an underwhelming opening night, everything was fantastic this time around.

A few extras:

-The lights have been dimmed in Wreck-Cage, and between that and some extra props, the maze improved a lot. It's still not a top-tier attraction, but that's okay.

- The haunted attraction pass signage goes out of its way to mention admission to The Asylum. Either people were confused about this being a maze, or the park considers it the best in their lineup (which is a fair opinion!).

- Blade Drummers has added an audience interaction element where you can scan a code on your phone to "Join the show." It seemed go ignored almost entirely - I'm pretty sure I was the only one who used it (for research purposes, it had to be done). The web link it directs to causes your phone screen to alternate between thematic colors and your flashlight to synchronize with the stage lights. Largely unnecessary, but not totally lame either.

- The pool from the old miniature boat racing/fountain area was filled in to accommodate more pirate theming.

- Lastly, for fans of Great Adventure lore, could this addition to the 3 Point Challenge basketball game be an indicator that it'll be gone next season, à la the old Spider of Doom?

Why are they using Nox from Great America in their advertisements lol, does Great Adventure have a Nox clone?

one, I love the pirate theming in the old fountain space, and second, I don't think that basketball spider is the spider of doom, spider of doom is supposed to be big and not small

Not that I know of! I guess they just decided to use a stock image for it. For Great Adventure, it's always been Doctor Fright (with a new co-star for 2025 - shown in terrible, grainy quality here).

Lived in NJ most of my life and you have every right to make fun of it. I always said the three best things about living there were Great Adventure, Seaside Heights, and how close it was to major cities that aren’t in NJ.

No offense New Jersey folks, but when this is a wildly popular and crazy successful offering, I won't be able to resist silently judging your state and, by extension, all of you NJ thoosies, collectively. 😋

Counterpoint:

KD hosted some Monster Truck thing.

Hey y'all, I'll be here until close if anyone wants to meet up and hit some coasters and haunts. I'll be in an oversized white suit jacket. Looking forward to finally checking out GA's fright fest!!
