RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

Thank You to all the System Admins who made the server move work! I definitely had a bit of withdraw!

RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

A ton of problems came up with BGTFans about 30 minutes after it went online and I ended up having to essentially rebuild the site. I'm fairly sure everything on that side is fixed now. If you see anything that looks off anywhere on the network, please let us know.

RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

Thought I'd just mention it, but will the "Areas" forum be applied to all officially covered parks that have differently themed areas or just BGW?

RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

It'll make its way to all the parks if people like it.

Okay cool. I will note it is an interesting choice you have for the England flag I just now noticed. That is the actual flag for the country. Most people assume the Union Flag or Union Jack is England's flag but little do most people realize the Union Jack is the Flag for all of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Also to note, the Union Jack the name of Great Britain's flag is where the newest store in Banbury Cross got its name. Interesting how all these things work into each other and fit together.

We've been using that flag for about 2 years now.

Yeah, I haven't really paid attention to those little icons. I just don't use them that much and I honestly don't understand their purpose sometimes. But seeing them with the areas subforum looked pretty neat.

RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

They're not meant for general use- one day we'll find a way to disable non-staff from using them completely. Basically they allow some of the sorting and filtering mojo we pull off with the various structured boards.

RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

So many changes, so little time.

I guess I should start out with the server move. As mentioned previously, the original plan was to move the entire network onto Amazon Web Services. Well, unfortunately, just about everything that could go wrong did and, with roughly 24 hours before the server was set to go offline, Gavin was forced to completely scrap those plans. We ended up renting a new, more powerful (and more expensive), VPS from a new provider and, Gavin, by some crazy miracle, managed to get everything up and running before midnight last night after having already worked his normal job all day. Remember, that's after he had already been up ridiculously late working on the AWS move for days. So, with all that said, thanks a ton Gavin! You managed to pull a rabbit out of that hat.

Secondly, if you couldn't tell already, there's a ton of restructuring going on with the Busch Gardens Williamsburg side of things. If everything is fairly well received, those changes will likely start making their way to the other officially covered park boards as well. Everything we're doing with the restructuring is very much an experiment. If you have any ideas on how to improve the setup of the structured boards, by all means, let us know.

Lastly, I've patched out a ton of graphical and usability bugs on the forum today- some of which I've been meaning to take care of for ages now. Many of you probably won't notice the vast majority of them, but trust me, there's a ton going on.

RE: The ParkFans Network: Site Updates & Changes

Oh, something else I should probably mention: The ParkFans Wiki is down for renovations. No clue how long everything will take, but it's something we still very much believe in. For years it has been horrendously neglected- both in terms of content and in terms of software maintenance- but it is truly something we want to get right. We have plans for what we want to do and a general path to making it happen, but giving any sort of estimate normally comes back to bite us. Just know that it will return and it'll return better than it ever has been before.
