It would be sad if they pick a suspended coaster when it's time to resurrect Drachen Fire's station only for it to be as weak as Iron Dragon with a 48" minimum height to boot.
Better make it 52" to be sure. Iron Dragon occasionally does some swinging...

I’d like to talk about some elements I would like to see in it for a moment:
-Overbanked turn or a “wave turn” at some point. MF’s overbank, Fury’s wave turn, and Skyrushes Stengel Dive are three of the best non-inverted elements IMO.
-Head Chopper elements of this is a twister Giga. I think trying to avoid that is a missed opportunity.
-Quick lifthill speed.
-2block sections for 3 train operations. 24 people per train.

You need 4 blocks for 3 trains actually. But regardless it needs to be at least in the 1300 rph range.

Also a Skyrush speed lift hill speed with three trains would probably result in stacking and could be a maintenance issue. I hope they go with a chain for this like Fury’s that isn’t too slow but allows for a train to fill by the train clearing the lift. Oh and gives a great view to take in.

And yeah put in a Stengel dive somewhere.

Not sure if this has been covered or not, but evidently this project will be on the Agenda for the 9/12/18 meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Board if anyone is interested. Link to the posted materials is here: https://jamescity.novusagenda.com/AgendaPublic/CoverSheet.aspx?ItemID=4016&MeetingID=854

Nothing ground-breaking (pun intended), but a few details:
  • The project is now called "Festa Italia Expansion"
  • Construction will commence before Sept. 19, 2019 (or else the approval will be void)
  • This hearing was buried in a required public notice in the VA Gazette - there it is referred to as a "new structure in the Festa Italia section"
  • To mitigate the RPA encroachment, "The applicant has proposed the planting of 30 native canopy trees, 60 native understory trees and 90 native shrubs, thereby doubling the mitigation requirements of the County" and "Required mitigation planting will be installed within the RPA buffer on the Busch Gardens property."
  • "Due to the scale of the proposed expansion in relation to existing structures surrounding the project site, RPA encroachment is deemed unavoidable for this exception request. "
  • The site plans do not appear to be different from the ones already posted on here - and they still say "Project Madrid"

@kingadam and I looked into the letter sent to adjacent property owners a few days ago and, after getting in contact with JCC, we can confirm that Stormwater/Resource Management doesn't have anything not already published from the Planning department.

Maybe we'll see a new detail from the meeting on Wednesday?

I can't believe Festa is going to be getting a 500 foot quintuple looping water slide called drachen watr, it's true my uncle that works at nintendo stole this concept art :/// I also can't believe this is what I'm using my art degree for.

On a more serious note, I really hope that this being a big festa expansion means that they'll finally add another path to connect festa to the rest of the main park; I always dread having to cross that bridge on busy days.

so from the site plan PDF, it puts the site plan over a satellite image of the area & i thought that was pretty cool to see. it helps me visualize the full area a little better.

Can't get over how huge this area is. Those footers are excitingly massive. Also, this area does not seem to require a huge level of tree clearing, there are lots of open spots which is a plus. The orientation of this looks like they could have a station and entrance stemming from the path of the area around Roman Rapids or secondarily, near the train station.

Thoughts?

looking over the area once again, the satellite image does really show how huge the area really is! it looks a little larger than the festa italia hamlet itself!

Using an app that measures distance on Google Maps -
Festa is about 360ft wide x 850ft long (bridge to furthest curve in Rapids).
The "coaster area" is about 660ft wide (river shore to train tracks) by 600 ft long (back of San Marco to train tracks). The length could go about 950 ft from San Marco if they crossed over the tracks and went almost to the river.

For reference "Flying Aces" has a 596x600ft footprint; Intimidator has a 605x895 footprint and SkyRush is about 635x700ft.

So, yep thats-a bigga coaster in Festa.

Since Zachary posted the last update and the RPA-impacted-only site plan that's again in this package, the footers have bugged me. I can see how the excerpt closest to the Rhine could be part of a [coaster-type] attraction, but the excerpt closest to San Marco seems odd to me...

I'm expecting to see part of a footer on the bottom side of "San Marco" truncated by the RPA line, and the footers on the top of "San Marco" have that 90 degree intersection with...something. Yes, the "Rhine" also has a near 90 degree angle, but it's easy to envision a track crossing with the other halves being outside of the RPA and thus not shown. The "San Marco" one just stops with a stub in the middle. What kind of layout or element would do that?

I guess I can envision some possibilities, but curious whether anyone has tried to overlay any creative track layouts on these footer placements specifically.

You mean that helix?

I don’t know. Will say it’s a very tight radius. Could be something pretty intense.

EDIT: You know what I think it could be? A Stengel or wave turn. Footers are pretty similarly placed to the ones on Skyrush and Wallabi Goliath, albeit bigger.

The Great thing about GIS software is being able to make a geotagged layer out of the site plans, build the area map, and overlay to measure. So to put the helix we see on the left into perspective: It's about 119' in diameter, about as big as the 'inner helix' on Appolo's turnaround. More than double the size of Nessie's helix. ABout 20 feet bigger than Griff coming out of the spash down.

Comparisons to other rides: I-305's last 180 before the break run is 145 feet in diameter. Fury's Hammerhead Turn is 95 feet in diameter, but it's footers are 119 feet apart outter edge to outter edge.

As for the bolded, a couple of things come to mind:
~Lift Hill footers that change to the other side when it gets up higher. The footers there line up with the guessed drop turn footers in a way that makes sense.
~Storage track.
~That's the footers for track coming into the element.

I'm gonna make what some might think is a bold statement, but I am convinced the area shown in the buffer plans is NOT where the coaster is confined to. The radius with the 3 partial footers on the Rhine side to me suggests that it's going to the other side of the train. That could be a great feature for the train and the coaster to go right over it. Theoretically in the San Marco area there's plenty of places to put an entrance in the area.
