Not sure what that means, but hunch says KD's got something else up their sleeve.

ValleyFair's Enterprise is still up for grabs. With an empty plot of land next to Delirium and the backlash of this announcement (and probably 2017 season pass sales), I wonder if KD gets considered for it? I hope so.

I was even more excited for 2009 (Americana and El Dorado) and 2014 (40th Anniversary park theming) than I am for 2017...

I don't think there is anything 'coming' that's going to make up for pissing off 3/4 of their frequent visitors. I'm over it. It took me an hour or so, but there are plenty of people out there that are genuinely pissed off. Adding chump change kiddie rides should accompany a larger investment, not be the hype. But hey, I'm sure the flying school bus el-dorado will look great at the base of the centerpiece Eiffel tower.

Watched the In the Loop live feed and the air at the end of the announcement and lights coming up, it seemed like the pitchforks and torches were going to come out. I think everyone sat there a second and was thinking it was a gotcha moment or something, then NOTHING. They tried asking them at the end and they wouldn't divulge any information. They even asked why they would post pictures of Snoopy and Hurler and lead everyone to believe there was an announcement going to happen. They played the dumb card like 'We did?' It's just strange all the way around. Not even an adult flat. I have wondered why they don't already have a photo pass system for all the rides. Seems like a no brainer. Is FunPix similar? I'm not familiar with it and haven't looked it up, but will.

I think we need to keep in mind that this forum is not the target demographic for this announcement. I think the combination of a Planet Snoopy expansion, the introduction of new Pre-K passes, and free Wi-Fi are fantastic additions for parents of small children.

Problem is, the announcement was teased towards enthusiasts, not parents of small children. Things like Chad's repeated references to Hurler and coaster track, and the handful of pictures with Snoopy looking at Hurler, were clearly aimed at enthusiasts. I think they made a if mistake by leading those fans to think the announcement would be for them.

While I'm happy that now pretty much 1/4th of this park is entirely rides for kids. I'm still disappointed.

I don't know how to expression my emotions. If there was no build up for this I feel I would be fine but, when you put photos of a closed attraction on social media and hype an announcement date that is just wrong. Don't make fans assume that this will be the day in which we find out a question that has been awaiting an answer all year. I'm going to assume this is a marketing decision and all I can say is, why? Why would you pretend like your going to announce something regarding Hurler and then add onto Planet Snoopy. Which by the way opened in 2010 and had a massive overlay in 2013 so four years later were getting another expansion.

Also, and then at the end you have the guts to say that's not all. Fans drove hours to come to this announcement which we've known about in advanced for two days. Not just the enthusiast community is mad, general season pass holders and hell even people that would purchase tickets once a year were complaining on the parks social media pages. To put it in perspective there was dozens of comments on the parks Instagram page consisting of "L" which means loss. In a year in which a park down the road also announces a coaster that appeals to a similar demographic you decided to do a Planet Snoopy expansion? It has been seven year since KD has gotten a coaster in that time BGW has gotten three.

I'm not going to continue my banter and ranting I could be talking about additions in 2017 like Invadr or Mystic Timbers or even Cedar Point Shores. Yeah, Cedar Point Shores a slide complex addition and name change.

In summarization, Kings Dominion, I am a huge fan of your park and today I felt betrayed. At least the park will have wifi.

Wow, this sure backfired on the park really badly; in fact this whole situation screams "the marketing needs to improve right now". You know, something along those lines.

It is such a disconnect between the content of the teaser and the new attraction of 2017 that it isn't even funny.

I don't think y'all are accurately portraying the response.

In the media section, we were sounded by bloggers with young kids. They were all very excited throughout and after the announcement.

Do I personally care about the kids-oriented stuff? No.

Do I think this was the right time for another family-oriented addition? No.

Do I think the Cedar Point-style misdirection campaign was a good idea? No.

Do I believe that this backfired with an important segment of their guests? Yes.

That said, I do not think it is reasonable to assert that no one is happy, or that the announcements were met with silence in the theater. I believe that is simply hyperbolic and a mischaracterization of actual events.

I think 95% is a vast overestimate of the number of KD's guests who disapprove of this announcement. The negative side will always be the loudest. 95% of the response we see is probably negative. That said, the average guest—the one who represents 90% of the park's customers—doesn't like the park on Facebook, doesn't keep up with park news, and honestly doesn't have the slightest idea that Kings Dominion "should" be adding a coaster next year. A few weeks before the expansion opens, they may see a TV report about how KD is adding new children's rides for 2017 and think "Wow, that's cool. Maybe little Johnny would like to go to Kings Dominion again this year." There won't be any emotional response, there won't be any disappointment—they'll just think "that's cool."

Is the park facing serious backlash? Oh yes. Do I think some backlash is justified? Yeah. Do I think the announcement was totally tone deaf (to steal Pretzel's phrase)? Most certainly. Do I think the park needs to respond? Yep. All that said, do I think this is a bad addition? No.

I dunno we seem to be spending a lot of time chatting about it and as people keep pointing out Facebook and other fora are full of chatter.

I would say it is working rather well.

Do I like it, no.
not sure I care. I personally believe that the current CF admin have made a decision to make KD a Family Park with the emphasis on family. When you look at the demo of the areas around Richmond and NOVA that kind of makes sense. Money with young families. I expect we will see more cleanup, more kids expansion and if we see a coaster it will be a family coaster. Sure they may throw in a flat or two but that is all.

Many of you are saying that, despite the disappointing announcement, the Planet Snoopy expansion is a good idea. I disagree.

Planet Snoopy was hugely expanded only three years ago. Only three years ago, the park added eight children's rides. Only three years ago, Planet Snoopy expanded in size by 14 acres.

Last year, a large new children's area was added to Soak City. Not only was a children's area added, but it replaced three adult-oriented speed slides.

As someone who visits the park with smaller children, since 2013 I have never felt that the children's offerings at KD were too few. Nobody has ever told me that there wasn't enough to do in Planet Snoopy. Kings Dominion already has twenty children's rides; to compare, Busch Gardens only identifies fourteen rides as "kidsiderate." It just seems like KD has enough.

What upsets me even more is that there's no need to revitalize the area. Since 2012, the park's new additions have been placed in especially weak or rundown areas, to improve the park's infrastructure. That's why I defended the 2013 expansion of Planet Snoopy: it transformed the backwoods and rundown KidZville area into a beautiful, modern children's area.

2012's addition of Windseeker brought pizzazz (and a swath of brick pavers) to the deserted area left behind by Hypersonic XLC's removal. 2013 revitalized a disgusting children's area. 2014 brought brick pavers, theming, and new landscaping wherever the KD40 celebration touched. 2015 transformed a rundown, aging water park into the fresh and modern Soak City. 2016 purged Candy Apple Grove of its craggly, univiting walkways and brought new amenities and a bright, inviting atmosphere.

What does 2017 bring? Three children's rides in already the most beautiful part of the park?* Unless the park breaks an almost decade-long tradition, Hurler's area will continue to crumble, Old Virginia will continue to become rundown, and the asphalt throughout the park will continue to crack even more, all while lush gardens and brick pavers are being torn up to add these new rides.

*Yes, I called Planet Snoopy the most beautiful part of the park. Even more than on than International Street, I love relaxing near the fountain and gardens of the original Planet Snoopy. I understand that relaxing gardens don't bring in guests like new rides do, but for me, it's a shame that one of the park's nicest areas will go by the wayside.

My Suggestion
I would have been happier if KD did something like Busch Gardens has done for 40 years, and sprinkle these children's rides elsewhere in the park. Why not put Sally's Sea Plane in the empty lot next to The Crypt and theme it to a safari plane? Or put Peanuts 500 in the gaping space next to WindSeeker and give the cars a hot-rod theme to fit the 50's theme of the area? Or put the Kite-Eating Tree in Old Virginia to fit the woodsy theme? Space in all these areas is abundant.

I think this would be a better solution. This way, children could experience the new rides without being corralled in Planet Snoopy, enthusiasts would benefit from new energy being brought to some of the park's most dead areas, and parents could allow children to ride something while other parents and older siblings enjoy bigger rides.

Frankly, I'm not opposed to the rides. I'm opposed to another Planet Snoopy expansion.

I guess I should clarify my previous statement. I don't mind this addition. I understand the role that kiddy sections have at theme parks. I'm just upset with the way it was announced and teased. A small Planet Snoopy addition did not require a presentation with a warning that only the first 500 pass holders will be allowed and it did not warrant a tease of Snoopy at random places in the park. The teases were misleading and the announcement was mishandled, but I don't have a real issue with what was announced.

The 'rumor' video put out was more inappropriate that the 'snooping' around campaign. Chad answered to coaster rumors as well as construction crews off Doswell road. This was deeper than 'misleading'. It was just plain lying.

Honestly, I don't think this addition to the park makes it anymore family friendly than it was previously. Similar to what Joe said, these additions are just adding extra fat to the park's lineup that they didn't need. They may make the park more toddler friendly, but a family park, at least in my opinion, keeps innovating and adding rides in every range of ride type, not just small children's rides. This along with the pre-k pass further proves the point that next year isn't about families, but moms and nannies with kids 5 or 6 and under. If I was 6 or 7 next year, I would much rather want to go to BGW and ride their new low-height requirement family wooden coaster that people of all ages can greatly appreciate than go and ride things that are now beginning to bore me.

I'm glad I was at BGW when the announcement happened. I read it there, and was still pretty disappointed. Then again, I am not surprised. Hurler, being far worse off than Gwazi before it was axed, needed last minute planning. BGT didn't know what to do when Gwazi closed and I didn't expect KD to do any better.
That last teaser with Snoopy in front of Hurler was just cruel though.

Now that he announcement was made: the kids rides don't affect me one way or another, because I couldn't see myself taking my nephews and nieces to KD. Maybe the pre-school passes will change that, but I'm still not feeling swayed. (Disclaimer: my brother, his wife, and myself all grew up with Busch Gardens instead of KD, so I might just be biased.) I would love to he other people's opinions on whether or not this would make them more likely to bring kids to KD, considering they already have a big ride lineup for kids.

The WiFi sounded exciting at first, until I realized that the only place in the park where I feel like using it is Starbucks, which already has WiFi. I also like the sound of a photo pass, but they need to bring back more photo ops in order to make me want to pay more than $30 for the whole season.

If I had kids, and I were picking a park for them, honestly I would go to KD.  I see nothing at BGW for young kids that compares to what KD offers.

I agree with this. Normally I go to KD or BGW with my son, who is now 6, so I don't get to do the big coasters since I can't just leave him. Normally, I reserve a day in the summer to do all the big stuff by myself or with a friend.

KD has more things for my 6 year old and 2 year old daughter than BGW has. Especially for my 6 year old who loves coasters...at BGW the ONLY coaster he can do is Grover (InvadR is questionable based on what the height restriction will be). At KD he can do Great Pumpkin Coaster, Woodstock Express, Avalanche and Ricochet.

Flat rides are interesting in that BGW and KD have a nice variety that don't exist at both parks (Battering Ram comes to mind). With this announcement, they'll have a whip ride neither of my kids have ever seen which I think is cool. I don't really know what the "Sally's Sea Plane" thing does but I'm fairly certain the 6 year old will like it.

The pre-K pass will come in handy for my daughter next year and I'm glad KD is finally doing one! I was already planning to get her one at BGW.

So really, for me this was an OK announcement. I would have liked a coaster announcement but at the end of the day KD is targeting the family market and BGW needs to pay attention to this.
