RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

This is, quite simply, news far worse than anything I could have imagined. I had been holding out hope that the string of terrible decisions would come to end, but they just seem to be getting worse and worse. I really hope BGW gets their act together soon. I'm going to start having a hard time enjoying the park if these trends continue.

I also can not believe they are willing to get rid of Splashus Maximus. That games makes thousands on any given sunny hot day. I do suppose a new ride would be open more time out of the year and something like this ride would bring in more attendance, but still they are literally getting rid of an extremely popular late spring/summer game that can bring in lots of money.

I can gaurentee without a doubt that spashus Maximus would have been removed regardless. SEAS is anti water balloon and no matter how much money it made SEAS is/was forcing BGW to remove it as part of their sea turtle initiative. It would have been removed ride or not from what I have been told.
NO.  The death of my beloved Splashus Maximus is officially TOO FAR!

I am sorry to lose this really fun attraction, too, and glad to hear it has some other fans here on the forum. My mother in her 70's was willing to team up and play this a few years ago, which I probably have mentioned here before, but she is pretty much a curmudgeon who does NOTHING attraction-wise, but she did Splashus Maximus!

Umm. Folks..

I love you and everything (I really do) but I think your overlooking a LOT things.

This may NOT be Primer. Several other companies make small, vertical coasters aside from Primer. Plus you folks know way better than I do that the company parks have no history with Primer and they normally stick to established relationships.

Also, Intamin AG builds several nice 'small footprint' coasters. Little 4th Dimension coasters at that which can fit into that tiny spot. They also have a relationship with them which Primer doesn't- They built Cheetah Hunt down in BGT.

Little things like this- Green Lantern: First Flight at SFMM. They do about 800 riders per hour and around 9600 in a 12 hour day. Much better numbers then the Primer version suggested.

It might be a clone of another ride, but I'd find an Intamin 4D Coaster highly preferable to a Primer clone. Few of them exist and they are rather damn fun. Plus, I cling to the firm belief that these parks aren't stupid and they know what their doing (I hope).

If i recall, BGW (specifically?) wants nothing to do with Intamin for the foreseeable future, unless management changes quite a bit, though perhaps Cheetah Hunt may sway them eventually. Also, since the footer layout matches that of S:UF almost exactly, I think we know what we're in store for.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

Jon,
There is a pretty big difference between a Drop Tower and a Coaster. Intamin has a great reputation when it comes to coasters. Lovely, Fast, Amazing Coasters of which I'd be proud to spawn their evil coaster babies (if that was possible). I almost added in a dig about the drop tower issue but decided to leave it alone.

The super upper management types generally call the shots for these things, at least they used too. Their also the sticky folks who tend to go with companies they know over one's they don't such as B&M, Zierer, Mack and Intamin. There is also an off chance Mack Rides has come up with something nutty to give them.

I'll go dig around on RCDB and report back if they make something nutty that could fit into that spot.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

Williamsburg has always had a bad relationship with Intamin. When they were building Pompeii it was originally going to go where the railroad tracks are today but, they worked it out. ( I imagine the ride would've been longer and a bit more exciting.) The Battering Ram has issues but I don't know anything about them. We all just have to wait and see... Maybe we'll end up with another pompeii. A clone, but it has good theming. Also, why the heck is there a star?

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

I really hate the idea that BGW is dropping a clone into a park filled with historically superb original coasters. It's not even necessary in the slightest. While there are some good small footprint coasters, they just don't coalesce well with the aesthetic feel of the rest of the park. Green Lantern may be a fun little ride, but just look at it. It looks so ugly, and I'd hate to see it in BGW's skyline. I'm just so disappointed in the BGW management for this.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

This is insane, taking down trees for a clone coaster in the worlds most beautiful park. Who came up with this idea, even if it was free I would not put this so close to Apollo's Chariot. This could have been put at the back of the area. I think something this size would have better suited elsewhere..

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

It is a well known fact that Larry Giles (and likely the rest of the park's Design & Engineering department) despise Intamin. Reportedly, even just in the last year or two, the park has been clashing horribly with Intamin over a handful of Pompeii maintenance issues they've been having. There are years and years worth of bad blood between Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Intamin. As long as the current management is intact, I'd be stunned to ever see an Intamin project at the park.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

Im guessing its because its a new age at theme parks but as i look at bgw of coasters past they have had "clone" coasters before.  The coaster(old and dated as they are)Die Wildkatze and the Wild Maus were clones that did ok at the park and had a fairly low rider capacity. personally i holding out with a wait and see attitude. As for trees coming down the park removed quite a few over the year, but has always planted more elsewhere.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

Since everyone's knocking the ride, I'm gonna go out on a limb and play devil's advocate.

1. We still don't know if this is gonna be a common clone or a custom layout. That design model looks like it can easily be customized to the park's wishes. All we know is a coaster is going on that spot similar to Superman/Sky Scream. Another case of I'm gonna wait and see what the park has in store before knocking anyone/anything.

2. The Busch chain is no stranger to common clones. Scorpion, Wild Maus, and two of the three Texas coasters are clones. If the cloned coaster is good enough, I could care less about what goes in that spot. I don't care what everyone thinks.

3. It's low capacity. While I would rather vouch for a higher capacity ride, plenty of major parks have added low capacity rides in the past. Hypersonic, Firehawk, Daredevil Dive, Green Lantern First Flight, Mystery Mine, Stunt Coaster, Volcano, etc... All low capacity rides. If you visit at the right times, you won't even have to worry about lines to begin with.

4. OK fine, it's up against another coaster. Knowing the park, they'll theme it up and make it look nice. Not a huge deal. Plus the roller coaster crossing has three coasters literally on top of each other, yet people like that. Having another coaster in Festa should hopefully push crowds out of Germany and distribute them around the park a little better.

5. Splashus Maximus was rarely ever used when I'd walk by it. Even during the hot season. Plus the balloons end up all over the place, are a pain to clean, and they're terrible for the environment. I'm surprised the park hasn't removed that thing earlier.

- Because I just have to be a proud BGW Fans hipster.

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

That ride does look fun. But so much about this doesn't make sense. How sure are we that this is definitely the new ride? Maybe it is some larger Disk'O Coaster? I know they aren't that long and tall, but just an idea. And what is significance of the star? Is it supposed to mean something?

RE: Project 2015: Premier Rides Coaster for Festa Italia

I think you have a lot of good points, netdvn. I agree that it's too early to write it off as a lost cause, although I definitely think that this project is very "new" Busch Gardens. Whether they can pull it off with old Busch Gardens style has yet to be seen! I also agree that it's a surprise that SM hasn't been removed already...but the way many people on this forum feel about LoD is how I feel about SM! D:

BGW know it all said:

You're talking about coasters added in the opening year and a wild mouse built specifically to cater to families in leu of drachen fire and to promote the summer olympics. The rider capacity of coasters built back then is absolutely nothing compared to today, it's a totally rigged comparison at any angle.

Netdvn while I appreciate the optimism in the possibility of this ride having a custom layout I have to ask you what you possibly think can be customized when the footprint is so small and the coaster is doomed to be shorter than 900 feet. There, in my mind at least, is so little that can be done that it feels to me that holding out for a customized layout would simply be grasping at straws.

With the rider capacity jargon again. You're talking about a few parks that get less than half of the yearly attendance of BGW and don't have the same sort of reputation that BGW does. BGT has always had more of a focus on coasters due to the fact that they're in orlando, competing with Disney, Sea World until recently, and Universal over the last 15 years. If you pay attention to the build dates of their rides the last clone added to the park is Cheetah Chase, which once again is geared for families unlike what BGW is planning to add (what they are calling an e-ticket attraction). Sea World also has had a differemt management style for San Antonio, mainly because the only other park in their marketing area is Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The attendance numbers for both parks are much lower than what BGW has been pushing.

I don't mind the hopefulness, just I find it hard for myself to pull for a park that once set its bar at disney and universal level quality to be aiming for something like Cedar Fair and Six Flags
