Seems to be the case. Kind of crazy how big villians land could be. Personally I'm not that big of a fanso, where the riverboats are is the cars area while anything behind big thunder mountain & haunted mansion is villians

There's a 0% chance that that rumor is accurate. Maybe changes to the individual ride, or facades, but land layout and stuff are locked in. They've had years and years of development and the land is actively into land clearing. Building permits and wastewater permits have already been filed. The odds of someone who's not gonna be in charge for over a month ordering changes to a land that's had years of work, already been greenlit, and is in the middle of being built feel slim.Rumor is with Josh taking over as CEO he has ordered changes-- supposedly bigger and better version of the land.
I mean, permits are already filed and the freaking thing is under construction. I mean, someone could start a rumor that Dinoland is actually coming back and that Josh wants to put the Wild Mice back where they were and bring back the boneyard, but they're in pieces on the ground. That rumor would be just as true as this one. Villains Land itself isn't changing. Just the e-ticket dark ride. Like, he couldn't change the coaster if he wanted to because AFAIK the manufacturer is already starting to work on it.Working in corporate America, I think you underestimate the ability of executive leadership to completely halt and/or change scope of projects. Not saying this is a true rumor, but nothing is truly "locked in."
The project is now getting reimagined with a focus on bolder, bigger ideas, with Imagineers having just been notified before the new year that the previously laid plans were scrapped, according to people familiar with the situation. The expansion, after all, will serve as the first significant addition to the theme parks under D’Amaro’s watch, one meant to drive shareholder value and reinvigorate interest in Orlando, Florida’s Disney World.
According to several sources, the point of reference for the land has gone from Dark Universe, the Universal Monsters-themed area of the recently opened Epic Universe, to the Isle of Berk, a land centered on “How to Train Your Dragons,” also at Epic Universe. Berk, which won the 2026 Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Theme Park Land category, is not only more expansive, with several rides, fun food options, an immersive stage show and tons of exclusive merchandise, but it is also, crucially, brighter and more family friendly.
Original concept art for Villain Land featured a large, black roller coaster, its spindly track curving around the land, adored with the prickly thorn bushes from “Sleeping Beauty.” It would be one of two rides plotted for the area, along with the dining and entertainment offerings, alluded to in D’Amaro’s initial D23 presentation. And while the new plan loosely follows these contours, according to those with knowledge of the plans, virtually everything else has changed.
Now, it is being converted to a more family-friendly coaster, along the lines of Slinky Dog Dash at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, this time themed to “The Emperor’s New Groove.” This makes sense, considering that antagonists Yzma and Kronk actually ride a rollercoaster in that 2000 comedy, and how many more guests you can get on the ride with a lower height requirement. (Before you ask, yes, there is a “pull the lever” moment in the ride currently.)
Elsewhere in Villains Land, Hades will rule over a dinner show that is being described as in the same vein as the Diamond Horseshoe Revue, a dinner show at the Magic Kingdom. Pain and Panic will also be along for the fun, with additional villains filtering in.
There will also be various character interactions throughout the land. According to one source, Disney has kept a keen eye on the appeal of Igor in Dark Universe.
The major attraction is going to be themed to Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty,” with an indoor water-based ride system that could emulate the Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure attraction at Shanghai Disneyland.
The stakes are high. To justify the Maleficent attraction being a Lighting Lane Single Ticket experience, it has to be really, really good.
If you’re D’Amaro right now, according to Tesa, “You need to know that when this thing opens, he can get Lightning Lane Single Pass revenue for 10 years. And if you want families from Denver to give you $20 per person to ride that ride, you have to make sure that you can make it worthwhile. If you can’t, you can’t take another run at it.”
According to multiple sources, there will also be a third, as-yet-unannounced ride in the land... a carnival-style “flat ride.” According to one source, the likely ride will be a spinner, like Dumbo the Flying Elephant, themed to Ursula from “The Little Mermaid.”
According to one source, these updated plans for Villains Land are due in the next couple of weeks. Then D’Amaro will take the proposal to the board, which will decide whether or not to proceed with the more elaborate and, really, more fun version of the land.
On the other hand it would be really really cool if this were a Polyp. I'm not led to believe that will be the case though; For the LOVE OF PETE, can they STOP with the DUMBO TYPE RIDES?! There is FOUR OF THEM in that park ALONE! 2 with dumbo, 1 with Astro orbiter, and another in Aladdin. Give us an ACTUALLY INTERESTING flatride for once, sheesh.

OG Article and Non Paywalled Version
IMO many of Disneys classic villains (basically straight from fairy tails) are dark and brooding in nature. Their issues tended to be they fell too much into their pride than any sort of slap stick that later Disney villains have become.I'm definitely on the other side of this one.
The fandom has been begging for "a Villains land/park" for literally decades now and the community consensus has always been that it should be dark, spooky, and gloomy. All of this LONG predates UEU's Dark Universe. Disney got up on stage at D23 and told fans that they were finally building what everyone has been asking for—that dark, spooky villains land. Turning around and building not that will rightly feel like a betrayal for many.
The article basically states to me in no uncertain terms that Disney doesn't want "a Villains land" as the community has long dreamt of experiencing, Disney wants an entirely different land that features villains. I would much rather Disney build that other land they want to rather than trying to pretend this is the Villains land people have always imagined. A kiddie coaster themed to Emperor's New Groove? That's fun, but it's an anchor for the South American "Beyond Big Thunder" concept from years ago, not an anchor for "a Villains land."
The Maleficent boat ride sounds amazing, but it's impossible for me to imagine how a flagship-level, Battle for the Sunken Treasure-style, Maleficent-centered, Sleeping Beauty darkride will cleanly mesh with the vibe of a fun, light, silly, The Emperor's New Groove-anchored "land with Villains." To me it sounds doomed to feel like a leftover from a previous, far more interesting, version of the land it sounds like we're unlikely to get.
The stakes are high. To justify the Maleficent attraction being a Lighting Lane Single Ticket experience, it has to be really, really good.
