Kings Dominion’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

So I call BS on the line that “celebrating 50 years wasn’t emphasized enough” and that they “didn’t put money to celebrating with a special event.”

To be fair, I, too, thought the 50th sorta sucked. I wish Rapterra hadn't landed on the same year since I think that took a lot of the focus and dollars away from the 50th, but still—Worlds of Fun showed just recently that you can debut a major new coaster and celebrate the park's 50th correctly.

I think anyone who was around for the incredible, two season long, 40th celebration or saw recent Cedar Fair 50th celebrations would have to admit that we were royally ripped off in comparison.

I especially love the station theming on Rapterra.

Because the post starts with a super sarcastic “thanks for making the 50th all it could be!”

Yeah I am also of the opinion that while the 50th wasn't bad it wasn't what it should have been. In fact knowing some of the ambitious things that were talked about and then scrapped post merger I believe we got rather screwed over.

That said I do think the original FB post was a little overly jaded and unfair.

Oh yes and for the record I love Rapterra's station decor.

The lighting package on International Street looks great as well. Sure they debuted with a mediocre light show but the general ambiance will be enjoyed for years to come.

And not for nothing, but the November bonus days were the most fun I’ve had at the park in a while. They stayed open every day if I’m not mistaken, even when it was wet cold or completely empty. In fact I give KD props for avoiding weather closures in general for the entire year. Closures do leave a bad taste in people’s mouths, especially for people who traveled all the way for Pantherian. There’s a huge difference between marathoning Pantherian on a desolate night and having to leave the park at 3PM.

Just out of curiosity, do you know what some of the ambitious things were?

A drone and fireworks package similar to what Carowinds got was definitely originally in the plans as well as other items.
