I feel like the ocean of mulch was a big mistake. Even if there were just some grass and shrubs around the coaster, I think it would look infinitely better than it does right now. Mulch out a buffer around the supports and whatnot, sure, reasonable—but I don't know why so much of the infield has to be endless mulch.

Agreed. They could do some good plantings in the far turnaround then in the helix.

I tend to think putting in something after the fact could stress the footers depending how the roots grow. If at least they kept some trees they could be comfortable knowing the footers would be safe. Which takes me to:
Sadly this is how GCI works when they build a new coaster in a heavily wooded area. They like to knock down most (if not all) the trees within the ride's entire footprint.
It’s something that I dislike about them. I could understand clearing out a majority but to leave nothing is tough. And if a park wants to put in trees after the fact the above is an issue. I wish they could work on the ability to leave some and plan around that.

I was just thinking too. Not many GCIs get plantings around the coaster after the fact either. They tend to stay in a field.

Exactly. I remember riding InvadR in August 2020 when the park first reopened during the pandemic. They had clearly not done any landscaping work around InvadR since the ride closed pre-pandemic, so the ride area was full of large weeds and small wild shrubs that had grown in. And it looked so much better. Even the presence of literal weeds made the area feel more natural and lush. I’d be happy if BGW just let some plans grow wild in the coaster’s infield. They’d probably spend less than they do now keeping the mulch clear of any greenery.

I found a pov from August 11th of that year (looks like it was the very first day of the event), or maybe a few days in) and WOW! Looks so much better like that. They even still had a couple trees there! And, bonus, the bear head was still on the train!

To provide a bit more info, the type/grade/etc of lumber used for wooden coasters is very specific—you can't just go cut down any tree and build a coaster. Plenty more info on this is available via Google if you're curious.

If they can find a way to make it safe, I'd love for them to bring back the shields that they had for a few months.

If im remembering correctly, when I was an operator there at the time, the reason for the removal that maintenance had told us is they apparently weren’t made very high quality and the plan when removing them was to have them remade at a higher quality. Obviously that didn’t/hasn’t happened. But still interesting nonetheless.
