[split] San Marco (Italy)

Nargus B. Sched and Cutthroat Carter's vamp/devotee showed up last night. Shortly afterward, Carter's remote mike conveniently went out, and he left to get a new one. Then while the vamp was persistently trying to get at Nargus's throat, her friend went and hoisted him up, and carried him out to the front of the tub!

My wife and I enjoyed a full Howl-O-Scream weekend, and our 3 children (6, 8 and 10) joined us Saturday from open til 6pm. Here is the family trip report.

Shows:

Night Beats:

We saw it both days and thoroughly enjoyed it. The kids stayed focused on the show, that is how a parent knows they like it, no fidgeting. Ulrich is the consummate performer and Beatrix is definitely an upgrade from last year. My wife is an 80’s girl, so the jitterbugs got her attention, especially Wake Me Up. We both really enjoyed Gabe’s renditions of Superstition and Take Me Home Tonight. His cheesiness adds to his charm. Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moon light?

Fiends:
Took the kids Saturday and they thought it was funny. I know, we are terrible parents and should be shot, right? Is it Broadway? No. But it is fun! They really liked Igor and The Creature. My wife liked the vampire. Sunday at 2:30 was a really good show.

Dig it up:
Always fun. The kids didn’t get to see it because of rain, and we didn’t catch it until 9pm Sunday. I learned from one of the cavemen that Dominic, the male lead dancer, has no professional training. Very impressive. The whole cast was on point.

Houses:

We didn’t hit them all.

Cut Throat Cove:
Went through in the daylight and still had an awesome time! Plenty of actors and scares to go around. A lot of misdirection. I especially love the way they were able to repurpose stuff to fit. The chicken coops were great for misdirection. Proof of quality through recycling.

13:
A lot of fun. The last room needs more. Had some really good scares though.

Deadline:
Always a quality house. The actors Saturday were rather lackluster, but Sunday had a fire lit under their asses. They were killing it Sunday.

Bitten:
Didn’t have the best time, but it was no ones fault. Plenty of scares going on, just not to us. It was an awkward time when everyone in front and behind us were getting scares. Well themed though.

Terror-Tories:

Demon Street:
Saw some kids with a crowd around them dancing Sunday night. The fire is impressive and the demons were really into it!

Ports of Skull:
The 2 main pirates were funny, got plenty of pics of the kids. The scare pirates were doing really well. They were actually using the Pompeii bridge!

Ripper’s Row:
My favorite place in the park. Nellie/Nanette is AWESOME! Sunday, on the way out, they had a dead hooker on their hands, and I jumped into character and started arguing with Scotland Yard with a ripper egging us on! That was a lot of fun. We had to go for about 10 minutes. I love the immersion of this area.

Overall, it was an awesome weekend, not much to complain about. Hope to be back closing day!

One of my favorite ladies of the night was laid to rest; presumably done in by The Ripper.
Quite the gathering; Constables, Rippers, hooker.

This was a LOT OF FUN! It lasted quite a while. One of the Constables tried to confiscate my camera for being too nosy or something. All of the actors were awesome!! Arguing back and forth, even with guests gawking and onlookers. One Ripper arguing with another about who got credit for the kill, etc. It even got a little bit "naughty" at one point.

The constable told me she accidentally fell on the butchers blade 18 times.

That whole scene on ripper's was great. My favorite part was the constable berating a kid (all in good fun) for wanting to get a picture with the corpse. "Oh, you're a sick little bugger, ain't you?"

I'll be there Friday night and I'll try to remember my camera, no promises though. (And an extremely long TR is inevitable).

Aye, poor Kirsten Koch, a lovely lass, ran afoul of the Ripper while looking for her sister's killer. A Scotland Yard Inspector soon showed up to examine her wounds. Then as he and the other officials from the constabulary were discussing the manner of her death, she made herself more comfortable.

A bit later, as I was photographing the crime scene, a beastly giant of an Undertaker suddenly loomed over me and warned me to be off--or else!

I've been wondering, who is the actual Ripper Character in that terror-tory (if any)?

The actual Jack the Ripper (if it was only one person in truth) was never apprehended; one of the first serial-killers of the nineteenth century, whose identity was never discovered. Therefore all of the suspicious characters in Ripper's Row are suspect, and left to the public's ponderations.

Here is my overall view on Howl-O-Scream 2013 which I attended Sunday October 13.

Houses(I will list them from my least favorite to my favorite)

13 Your Numbers Up: The past three years I have always thought this to be a decent house, but something happened this year that made it seem very lackluster. First of all the few actors in the house, were not scaring people at all. Second that long hallway with nothing in it made me very upset that they did not take advantage of all the room. Third, some of the rooms were just plain terrible including, fear of clowns(which I had so much hope for), fear of thunder and lighting(where was the thunder?), and fear of superstitions(more like fear of a haunted house under construction. Why 13 is always the longest line I have'nt a clue. I was very upset with 13 and would very much like to see it gone next year.

Cutthroat Cove: Although I thought the house looked awesome, it was not scary at all. The house was very immersive but a trip through Walt Disney World's Pirates Of The Caribbean would have been much more scarier. I feel that It would have been much scarier if they had gotten rid of Catacombs and made the pirates all skeletons which is what I expected them to do. I also feel that the white table cloth/strobe light room was went on for two long and by the end of it I was suffering from a migraine.

Bitten: I like Bitten and would hate to see it go, but I feel that there were a few things that were wrong with it. One being that as majority of the actors in it were female. I have nothing against women actors but when I think of vampires I tend to think of males. The actors also were not that good with using their hiding places. Also I wish that they had not gotten rid of the gate at the front.

Catacombs: I have always liked Catacombs because it is such a well themed house. That being said I feel that it is time to let it go. Not because of the house or the actors(both of which are awesome) but of the age of the attraction. They have not changed it at all since it opened and that is good in the fact that it has never been a bad house, and bad in the fact that it has gotten old. The one complaint I would have is that it felt under staffed and the actors were not using the hole in the celling like they did the past years.

Root Of All Evil: Last year this house was the worst house I had ever done at Howl-O-Scream. This year it has become one of favorites. The actors were good and scary, the costumes and make up were incredible, and the 'alien' at the end scared the hell out of me. This house wins best comeback of any Howl-O-Scream house.

Deadline- Deadline was the best house this year not only because of the amazing set and maze itself, but because of the actors who were really into character. I feel that Deadline was the strongest House this year.

Terror-tories(I will list them from my least favorite to my favorite)

Vampire Point: Wait it actually existed? First of all I spent half the night looking for the vampires in Vampire Point. It was severely under staffed and none of the vampires were even in the main village. The only saving glory was that I thought that they did a good job with the hotel. Such a good job that I think that people who do not go a lot would have thought that is how it looks all year.

Port Of Skulls: I think that the area was very understaffed and felt more like a giant bar than of a terror-torie. I also saw a perfectly good bungee scare that was not being used. It also felt very out of place in san marco and I would have rather it to have been in fiesta Italy where its house was.

Demon Street: I think that they did a good job with Demon Street, it looked very cool and the demons were scary however it felt more like a scare zone then of a terror-torie.

Ripper Row: I feel that Ripper Row was the highlight of the event. It really made you feel as if you were walking in london during the times of Jack The Ripper. Even though I would not call it scary, I think it was creepy and the perfect definition of what Busch Gardens call's a Terror-Torie.

Shows(I will list them from my least favorite to my favorite)
Fiends: I have never seen the show so I cannot give you my opinion on it.

Night at the err... I mean Dig It Up: I think the the show is childish and has nothing to do with Halloween and they should go back to showing Nosferatu there (it would save a lot of money).

Night Beats: This a fantastic show and I would not change anything about it.

Has anyone wondered why the fans carried by the ladies of Ripper's Row are so loud?

They have steel blades!

Reminiscent of an old favorite...
