No Escape
I’m feeling pretty awful right now. I had a rough night so if my thoughts are a little disjointed or don’t make sense, I apologize.
I had another nightmare last night and this unshakeable feeling of dread is getting stronger. You know how some people have knees or backs that ache when a storm is coming? I’m starting to think feel that way about the twisted knotted feeling I have in the pit of my stomach, except I don’t think it’s predicting a thunderstorm. I’m not sure what but I don’t think it’s good.
Ugh. Sorry, back to the dream nightmare.
I’m running again, like the last time, but this time I’m running so hard all I can hear is my own heartbeat pounding in ears. It’s so loud. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. I turn my head almost as if in slow motion to look behind me. All I can see are eyes, glowing red in the darkness – was it always dark? I don’t remember. –following me. I go to scream but realize that screaming would take up too much valuable oxygen and I need all the air filling my lungs if I’m going to escape what’s following me. And I need to escape those eyes. I know it as sure as I know my own name.
I turn my head back around though I can practically feel the eyes burning into the back of my neck I keep running. I realize suddenly that I’m in the woods. There are trees everywhere looming darkly above me. Branches whip at my face as I run past. I can hear a rustling in the leaves behind me. I’m not alone.
I keep running. That’s all I can focus on. Just keep running. Leaves cling to my face and the twisted tree roots beneath my feet make it hard for me to run.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
Like the last time, I trip and crash painfully to the ground. I look down at my ankle and there’s a root wrapped tightly around it. I try to yank my foot free as hard as I can, but the tree only tightens its grip. I can feel something inching its way up my leg and I see a thick vine encircling my calf. I struggle. If I can just break free I might still be able to escape whatever wretched being is following me, but the only result is that more vines and branches reach around to trap me in place.
My entire body is entwined with vines and I can’t move now. I realize now is the time for screaming. As I open my mouth to fill my lungs with air, a branch wraps around my face and leaves fill my mouth, choking me. The only thing I can move now is my eyes. I rapidly blink away tears. I need to see. Need to hear.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
Leaves rustle and I hear the sound of soft slow footsteps. A pair of glowing red eyes pops out from behind tree. More glowing dots appear. It’s too late, I know. It’s too late. They are here. I’m surrounded.
Thankfully that’s when I woke up. I got up, got myself a glass of water to wash the acrid taste of bark out of my mouth and tried to go back to sleep. I slept fitfully, my dreams a confusing blur of shudder-inducing laughter punctuated by screams and a mouth with a too-wide grin of perfectly pointed teeth all with a creepy nursery rhyme being sung softly in the background.
Suffice it to say, I was very glad when my alarm clock went off this morning. I’m going to grab some coffee to see if I can wake up a little more and then do some research on the internet. I need to figure out what these dreams mean. They must mean something.
Hmm... AND....
